In 1884 he built the first machine in the world which did the winnowing in conjunction with the reaping. On Monday 21st August 1944, which coincided with the birthday of the late H. V. McKay, more than 2000 employees and friends of H. V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd were entertained at the Melbourne Town Hall, in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Sunshine Harvester Works. The event was planned to "turn it on for the boys' in a manner befitting the occasion." The compere was Eric Pearce (of later TV newsreader fame) and the entertainment was provided by leading performers of song (W.M.Laird and Mary Miller), of music (John Robertson, W.M.King, and the Sunshine Brass Band), and of humour (Charles Sherman). The accompanists for some of the performances were Betty Miller and Eric Fox. Two films depicting the activities of the Sunshine Works were shown, and the managing director Mr C. N. McKay, was presented with a book by Mr Fred Bult who had 50 years service with the company. The book contained more than 1000 signatures from invited employees who had completed more than 10 years of service, Supper was provided in the Lower Hall, and the MC for dancing to the Synco-Harvesters Dance Band in the Main Hall was James Patrick. The committee which organised the function were Messrs. L.W. King (Chairman), G. Baker, J. Downing, R. Stewart, F. J. Lee, V. Armstrong, F. Fields, J. Aird, G. Wilson, J. G. McKay, T. N. McArthur, and R. Webb, with secretaries Messrs. G. Shaw and D. J. McKay. The above information was compiled from the Souvenir Programme, and from The Argus of Tuesday 22 August 1944 which can be viewed at http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article11357700, and from the Sunshine Advocate of Friday 30 June 1944.The Souvenir Programme provides a historical record of how the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated, as well as the type of entertainment and the names of the entertainers and other people involved. It also lists the types of dances such as the 'Fox Trot' and the 'Pride of Erin' that were normal entertainment in 1944. The Souvenir Programme is also significant in what it does not tell us. There is absolutely no indication of what would be considered to be a supper for an event like this in 1944, especially in the Melbourne Town Hall. From a historical point of view it would be interesting to know.Beige coloured cardboard document which is folded in two, and has brown coloured printing on three of the four sides. The document provides a detailed list of the entertainment and the presentations held in the Melbourne Town Hall, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Sunshine Harvester Works.1884 1944 / SOUVENIR PROGRAMME / DIAMOND JUBILEE of the SUNSHINE HARVESTER / MELBOURNE TOWN HALL / Monday 21st Aug.sunshine harvester, diamond jubilee, h. v. mckay, massey harris pty ltd, 21 august 1944, 1884, 1944, melbourne town hall, sunshine harvester works, sunshine harvester, diamond jubilee, h. v. mckay, massey harris pty ltd, 21 august 1944, 1884, 1944, melbourne town hall, sunshine harvester works -

McKay, the industrialist behind the Sunshine Harvester Works. ...The Cooinda Bowls Championship was a notable regional event held across various clubs in Melbourne’s west, particularly involving Sunshine Bowling Club. The event was part of the Cooinda Festival, which was a multicultural community celebration held in Sunshine, Victoria, during the 1970s, with strong ties to local Aboriginal and migrant communities. The name Cooinda, an Aboriginal word meaning “happy place” or “meeting place” reflects the festival’s inclusive and celebratory spirit. The Sunshine Bowling club was founded around 1910, and is closely tied to the development of Sunshine as a company town under H.V. McKay, the industrialist behind the Sunshine Harvester Works. The club was located in the Sunshine Gardens, Andersons Road, Sunshine. In 2007, the club folded. Later the club rooms were demolished, and the former bowling rink was converted into a lawn area, and which is now part of the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens. A wooden shield with inscription plaques attached. The shield comes apart into two sections, top & base. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town ...The Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue Sunshine opened in 1967. The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank. These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026. These pictures were captured after the stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled and put into storage. McKay’s advertising signs were more than just promotional tools—they were visual emblems of industrial pride and rural transformation. His company, famous for the Sunshine Harvester, used signage to reinforce the brand’s identity across Australia and beyond. Characteristics of H.V. McKay Advertising Signs • Brand Name “Sunshine”: This was McKay’s flagship brand, stamped on everything from machinery to buildings. The name itself evoked optimism, productivity, and Australian ingenuity. • Bold Typography: Many signs featured large, serif lettering with high contrast, often in red, yellow, or black colors associated with vitality and visibility in rural landscapes. • Imagery of Machinery: Some signs depicted the Sunshine Harvester or other agricultural implements, emphasizing innovation and reliability. • Materials: Signs were typically made of enamel, tin, or painted wood. Enamel signs were especially durable and popular for outdoor use. • Placement: Signs appeared on factory walls, railway sidings, rural supply stores, and even on the sides of barns and sheds across farming regions.
