On 22 December 1890, the military commanders of the then separate Australian Colonies prior to the Federation of Australia met to discuss the introduction of the khaki uniform throughout Australia. They agreed that all Australian Forces with the exception of the Artillery would wear the slouch hat. It was to be looped up on one side—Victoria and Tasmania on the right and the other colonies (later states) on the left. This was done so that rifles could be held at the slope without damaging the brim. Believed to be US Army Infantry dress blue uniform cap introduced in 1954 Black peaked cap with patent leather peak. Peak is blue underside, and black upper with a row of gold oak leaves and thin leather edging. Black leather chip-strap is secured by two gilt buttons, 17 mm diameter, embossed with a hunting horn surrounded by a wreath of laurel. The sky blue hatband is edged with 2 mm wide gold embroidery. The inner headband is brown leather-like material and the lining is red fabric.Under the lining a metal tab supports the crown at the front of the cap and crown edge is reinforced by wire. The Civil Air Patrol is the official USAF auxiliary. Formed during WW 2, it is currently tasked with search and rescue, communications, civil defense and aerospace education (via the CAP Cadet program) The Civil Air Patrol, while formed in WW2, became the auxiliary of the USAF when the air force was formed as a separate service in 1947. The uniform is based on the USAF uniform with distinguishing CAP insignia and badges.
