On 15 January 2024, the Executive Director made a recommendation (‘the Recommendation’) to the Heritage Council, pursuant to Part 3, Division 3 of the Heritage Act 2017 (‘the Act’), that the Former Sunshine Technical College, at 111 and 129–133 Derby Road, Sunshine (‘the Place’), is not of State-level cultural heritage significance and should not be included in the Victorian Heritage Register (‘the Heritage Register’), pursuant to section 49(1)(b) of the Act. An appeal was made by seven submissions. • Albion and Ardeer Community Club (Neil Head), who did not support the Recommendation and requested that a hearing be held • Sunshine and Districts Historical Society (John Pardy), who did not support the Recommendation and wished to participate in any hearing • Sunshine and Districts Historical Society (Olwen Ford), who did not support the Recommendation and requested that a hearing be held • Harwood Andrews Lawyers, on behalf of the Brimbank City Council, who did not support the Recommendation and requested that a hearing be held • Royal Historical Society of Victoria, who did not support the Recommendation and wished to participate in any hearing • Lesley Preston, who did not support the Recommendation and wished to participate in any hearing. After considering the Executive Director’s recommendation and all submissions received, and after conducting a hearing, the Heritage Council has determined, pursuant to section 49(1)(a) of the Heritage Act 2017, that the Former Sunshine Technical College located at 111 and 129–133 Derby Road, Sunshine, Brimbank City is of State-level cultural heritage significance and is to be included in the Victorian Heritage Register in the category of Registered Place. The Heritage Council has determined to include as the extent of registration the area that was the subject of a nomination accepted by the Executive Director, and has determined, pursuant to section 49(3) of the Heritage Act 2017, to include categories of works or activities which may be carried out in relation to the place, for which a permit is not required (permit exemptions).The significance of this successful appeal was a major win for local heritage advocates (including the Sunshine & District Historical Society, RHSV, and Brimbank Council), who argued that the school’s story is inseparable from Sunshine’s identity. As the site had been under threat, with earlier proposals to demolish the buildings, this determination now gives the site strong legal protection. The Kew Asylum Entrance Gateway and an adjacent gate lodge were built at the Princess Street entrance in 1873.1 The imposing sandstone pillars and cast-iron gates impressed upon visitors the therapeutic and civilising vision of the asylum. The entrance opened onto a tree-lined drive (now known as Main Drive) which culminated in an elliptical carriageway in front of the main building. The gates were listed by Heritage Victoria in 2020. The citation reads: "The Former Kew Asylum Entrance Gateway consists of two 4.5 metre sandstone gate piers on bluestone bases on either side of a 5.5 metre vehicle entrance set back from the High Street pavement. The 1870s gate piers are of Barrabool sandstone and repairs during 2015-16 were undertaken with sandstone from English Town, Tasmania. The gate piers are highly decorative and feature oculi, triglyphs, dentils, corbeling and other ornamental work. Each gate pier incorporates a pedestrian archway with a cast-iron pedestrian swing gate. Two curved sections of cast-iron palisade fencing on rusticated bluestone blocks extend from the outer edges of the piers to a set of shorter sandstone pillars on the High Street pavement. Straight sections of cast-iron fence extend 4.5 metres ending at two bluestone pillars. Garden beds have been created within the curved sections of fencing, bordered by concreted bluestone and planted with shrubs." Fortuna Villa was the family home of George Lansell the "Gold King" of Bendigo prior to being occupied by the Australian Army's Land Headquarters Cartographic Coy in WWII from 1942. Robin Boyd designed a supermarket and dwelling in Jordanville (now Ashwood). This design was the unique ctesiphon system of construction where walls and roof form one self supporting unit. Documents relating to a focus group brought together by the Shire of Nillumbik Chairman of Commissioners in 1996 to provide advice on the best long term use for the buildings and land situated between the former Eltham Shire Offices and Country Fire Authority buildings. These buildings are known as the Eltham War Memorial buildings located at 903-907 Main Road, Eltham. In May 2020, the Heritage Council Victoria did not recommend the site for inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register. The former Christopher Crisp residence was constructed in 1868 by William Watson, one of the members of the Bacchus Marsh Express printing company which took over the management of The Express after the first edition, 7 July 1866, was published by its founder, George Lane, a book binder. This syndicate failed after three months and the ownership was then taken over by Christopher Crisp, a compositor working for the company. Crisp remained the editor from 1866 to his death in 1915, when he was succeeded by his son, also called Christopher Crisp, and later by his grandson. Under the Crisp family leadership, The Express widened its readership and was subscribed to by influential men and public servants in Melbourne. (Heritage Victoria Council. Places. The front facade is symmetrical with two sash windows placed either side of the central door. A wire fence runs along the front of the cottage. Standing at the gate is a formally dressed gentleman wearing a top hat. A young child is standing on the road. This child is possibly Christopher Crisp, Jnr., who later took over the role of editor of the Bacchus Marsh Express in 1915 on the death of his father. Wattle Gully, and a handful of other 'new' companies - the Maude and Yellow Girl, Morning Star, A 1, and North Deborah - were the flagships of the revived industry and sustained the State's gold production for some 30 years. Wattle Gully mine, with a yield of 350,000 ounces, was the richest mine of its era. By 1940, the Wattle Gully Company had paid out £207,000 in dividends to its shareholders. The company continued to mine profitably through the Second World War, though it struggled due to a shortage of manpower. After the war, the mine continued to develop - in the early 1950s new plant including a winding engine, steel poppet head, and twenty-head battery was added. The plant was obtained from the Central Nell Gwynne Company, Bendigo. On 13 March 1969, the Wattle Gully Company closed down the mine, laying off 62 men. Since 1970 Wattle Gully mine has worked intermittently. Recent additions to the mine's infrastructure has been a new ore processing plant and a decline tunnel. The ore processing plant was operated by Newmont mining from 1987 to 1990 and subsequently operated by Consolidated Victorian Mines and Duketon Goldfields.
