The Cambridge Glass Company was chartered in 1873 by a group of Cambridge, Ohio businessmen. But it was not until 1899, when the site was purchased by the newly formed National Glass Company, that funds became available to start the construction of this new glass factory. n 1901, The Cambridge Glass Company was organized by the owners of the National Glass Company of Pennsylvania Arthur J. Bennett, a native of England, was hired to manage this new factory. Having experience in the china and glass trades. Many of the patterns were of Mr. Bennett's own design. Sometime around 1903-1904 the company's first trademark came into being, the words "Near Cut" pressed into the glass. Cambridge Glass soon became known worldwide for quality in both "crystal and colours, pressed and blown’. 1984. The National Cambridge Collectors purchased many of the moulds, all of the etching/decorating plates and other assets of Cambridge Glass from Imperial. The Cambridge Glass factory building was demolished in 1989A shallow factory made, frosted green glass vase. The central "frog" is a figurine in the shape of a draped lady, with ten holes at her base to hold flowers. The lady's shape is poorly moulded, indistinct and would have been cheaply made. No Makers Mark. Kindly scanned from Ringwood Branch archival collectionTranscript (kindly completed by Ken Briscoe using ChatGPT) RINGWOOD BRANCH COUNTRY WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION INC. February 13, 1946 in the Ringwood Town Hall, the Mayoress, Mrs. H.E. Parker, called the meeting and Ringwood Branch Country Women's Association was formed, and would be in the Yarra Valley Group. Speaker for the day was Mrs. Wray, Group President, Yarra Valley Group. Office bearers elected were: • Mrs. Greenshields (President) • Mrs. Shields (Secretary) • Mrs. Roberts (Treasurer) At the inaugural meeting, 93 ladies joined, and the first general meeting of the Ringwood Branch was held March 7, 1946, and by the end of August the membership grew to 160. In 1946 the joining fee was 4/- and you never attended a meeting unless you wore hat and gloves. The first year, meetings were held in the main Town Hall, then they were transferred to the small hall, which had a creche next door, at the baby health centre, where mothers could leave their little ones, while mum enjoyed the meetings, demonstrations or entertainment. The Branch had a very good Choir, conducted by Mrs. Dorrie Davidson, also a very talented theatrical group. Each birthday they put on excellent stage shows, some beautiful costumes being hired from well-known Melbourne theatrical company. The 1956 Olympic stage show had some well-trained, but out of form, athletes. Highlight of the year was the Annual Ball and two Debutante Balls. New branches were formed in the district, Everard, East Ringwood, Heathmont, South Warrandyte. There was also, Ringwood Younger set, a night branch (later years was renamed Marana). It was then that our membership dropped. As more and more branches were started in the district, Ringwood was then allocated to the newly formed Maroondah Highway Group. Craft classes and demonstrations were of a high standard, with some interesting things being made such as millinery, dressmaking, pottery, etc. In 1960 when Ringwood was made a City, a C.W.A. float was entered in the procession, this was a mammoth task, as hundreds of flowers were made and wired to the float, which was in green and gold C.W.A. colours. The time came when the Town Hall was to be demolished, and we moved to the Church of England Hall, Civic Place, but after a short time, this hall was also demolished. Meetings were then held at Ringwood Library until the library was no longer available. Our last move was to our present meeting room at Lionswood. Today you dress as you wish and membership is $12.00. The Ringwood Branch in 1995 has 2 life members and 21 members. The front of the Hire Services building was the sawmill’s sub power station and where general repairs were made. Mountains of sawdust accumulated at the back and local poultry farmers and market gardeners made use of this waste. Occasionally the sawdust piles burst into flames due to spontaneous combustion. The sawmill’s huge blades were at the back of the Greensborough Hire Services. Fire hoses stood ready. It commemorated the memory of the Eltham Soldiers who fell in the First World War and complemented the Eltham Avenue of Honour established in 1917 to those that served. In 1943 (WW2) the local community commenced plans to establish the Eltham War Memorial, a living memorial to benefit the children as opposed to a one in stone as per the obelisk. The Eltham War Memorial Trust was established in 1945. In 1947 the Trust intended for the Obelisk to be relocated from Bridge Street and Main Road to the Garden of Remembrance which was planned as part of the Baby Health Centre which was to be the first of three buildings of the Eltham War Memorial to be built in 1951. In 1951 the Eltham RSL was invited to be represented on the Eltham War Memorial Trust. During the period of Jun through October 1956 the original wooden bridge over the Diamond Creek in Bridge Street was replaced with a new concrete structure. At the same time the intersection of Bridge Street at Main Road was revised necessitating the relocation of the Eltham Obelisk. It was ‘temporarily’ relocated to the front garden of the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch on Main Road for safe keeping. In 2007, a suggestion was proposed by Harry Gilham (President, EDHS) to John Cohen (ERSL) to claim a special site along with the historic Shillinglaw trees on the now vacant former Eltham Shire Office site adjacent to the Eltham War Memorial precinct for relocation of the obelisk. In 2010 following the financial collapse and sale of the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch property and amalgamation with the Montmorency Eltham RSL sub-branch, the location of the obelisk was again in immediate jeopardy and in conjunction with Nillumbik Shire Council, supported by the RSL, the obelisk was relocated in front of the Eltham War Memorial buildings in preparation for the Dawn Service on Anzac Day 2012. The new location resulted in significant impact upon the Eltham War Memorial Garden. Council’s preferred location was near the Eltham Library however that would have cost $39,000. In 2017 known as the Kangaroo Ground Operations Centre a facility for hire managed by the Shire of Nillumbik. On 7 February 2009 (Black Saturday) the CFA Incident Control Centre (ICC) was located here. Described in "Worst of Days: Inside the black Saturday firestorm" by Karen Kissane (access via Google books): "..the ICC is part of a mud brick complex built in the 1980s as an emergency operations centre for several agencies, including the State Emergency Service. It is also home to the headquarters of the CFA's Lower Yarra Group. A small office with a whiteboard would be the incident controller's office throughout the office, but a larger central room, with data projectors, "smart boards" and maps would house the rest of the team.."Statement of Significance From the Victorian Heritage Database (2010) What is significant? The emergency operations centre is architecturally, aesthetically, socially and historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. Why is it significant? The emergency operations centre is architecturally and historically significant as a good and rare example of a large public building constructed in a 1980s version of the 'Eltham style', and as a rare attempt to adapt the 'Eltham-style' aesthetic to meet the changing demands of the Shire in the 1980s (Criteria B, D & E). The emergency operations centre is architecturally and aesthetically significant because it is constructed of mud brick and features: a central entry with a tile mural (Criterion E). This article provides a biographical overview of William Northcott, an accomplished English-born cornetist. Born in Devonshire, England, in 1811.He began studying music at age nine under the renowned cornetist Norton. He demonstrated rapid progress, leading to early opportunities in military bands. He joined the British Navy as a young teenager, initially aiming to serve on the St.Jean d'Acre during the Crimean War. He played the cornet aboard the Princess Royal and later the St. Jean d'Acre, becoming popular among officers and crew. William participated in significant events such as the Crimean War and the fall of Sebastopol before returning to England in 1856. He Continued naval service on the "Conqueror" (Mediterranean cruise, 1856–1859) and then the "Nile," where he served as leading cornet player and soloist. Accompanied the Prince of Wales on a tour of Canada, earning high praise for his performances.International Musical Caree. rAfter ten years in the British Navy, traveled to Australia to join his family and founded the Northcott Sandhurst Brass Band, introducing popular "sacred concerts." Moved to New Zealand, briefly led a band in Christchurch, and attempted gold mining before returning to music with a successful concert tour. On route to America, organized a concert in Honolulu and was hired by the local government to form and lead a band, which he developed into a respected ensemble. William arrived in San Francisco in 1871, performed as a soloist in a major benefit concert for Chicago fire victims, and gained popularity on the West Coast. Later he moved to New York City, performing with prominent groups and artists, including Henry Tissington and Mme. Parepa Rosa, and joined Carneross' Minstrels. Early Engagements (1873–1875):Solo cornetist at Congress Hall, Cape May, under Simon Hassler (summers of 1873, 1874, 1875). Performed with the San Francisco Minstrels (fall/winter 1873–74) and at the Chestnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia (fall/winter 1874). Centennial Exhibition (1876):Specially engaged to perform for several exhibitors, attracting large crowds (20,000–30,000 people daily).Played for major companies (Hook & Hastings Organ Co., Knabe Piano Co., Stieff Piano, etc.) and with the Centennial Band. Demonstrated remarkable endurance by performing multiple daily sets throughout the event.Subsequent Engagements (1877–1879): Soloist for the Permanent Exhibition (1877–79). Performed with renowned violinist Ole Bull in 1879 and impressed critics with technical feats, such as playing "America" in four octaves on the cornet.Concert Company Leadership (1891–1893): Managed and performed with his own Concert Company, recognized as one of the finest musical organizations in the country. The company featured top vocalists and instrumentalists, giving over fifty concerts in Philadelphia alone. Introduced an original comic opera, "Henrietta; or, the Power of Music," to diversify the repertoire. Northcott's career is marked by international travel, military service, musical leadership, and a reputation for both performance excellence and band organization. Williams and his brother James Northcott served in the military together. James settled in Bendigo and worked for George Lansell as his general manager for 26 years. This entourage was known as the 'Centenary Train' and was occupied by members of the Australian Historical Society who travelled from Melbourne. A second photo shows a large group of trams in View Street between Barnard and Rowan Streets. The photo of the family group is at an annual Ithacan picnic held in the 1930. Behind the group are family cars which reflect the increasing economic prosperity of members of the Ithacan community.
