This is a Kodak film packet of colour photographs of the historic Tanswell's Commercial Hotel, Beechworth. They were taken by William Gray in 1970–71, soon after the Tanswell era ended in 1967, after almost a century. Over its long history, the hotel hosted figures such as the Governor of Victoria in 1906, and reputedly even Ned Kelly. The photos depict the hotel's prominent exterior and antique interiors and furnishings, as well as Gray’s personal interest in antiques. One photograph shows Gray’s family at a Chinese burning tower. The reverse of the photographs contain Gray's handwritten notes. He later opened his own studio in Ivanhoe. These photographs have historic significance as they depict the Tanswell's Commercial Hotel- a notable example of Australian country hotel architecture and a prominent local landmark. Furthermore, these photographs were taken prior to the restoration works hence depicting the original colour and texture of the facade's brickwork. These photographs also have artistic significance as they beautifully capture the antique interiors of the hotel.Colour rectangular photographs printed on matte photographic paper unmounted8496.1: Obverse: 9. 8496.1: Reverse: Tanswell's Historic Hotel/Beechworth/About 1970-71?/8496 8496.2: Obverse: 12. 8496.2: Reverse: Tanswell's Historic Hotel/Beechworth/Remarkable ____ ____/1971/8496 8496.3: Obverse: 10. 8496.3: Reverse: Upstairs Antique Furniture/Incl: Triple 'Love Seat'/Tanswells Historic Hotel/Beechworth/About 1970-71/8496 8496.4: Obverse: 16. 8496.4: Reverse: Tanswell's Historic Pub/Beechworth/Upstairs Antique Room/1971/8496 8496.8: Reverse: 1971?/Tanswell's Historic Hotel/Beechworth/Upstairs Antique Room/Triple "Love Seat"/Later.../I bought a red _____/'Double' Love Seat for/__ studio+_____/It was not successful/8496 8496.5: Obverse: 15. 8496.5: Reverse: Bard, Susan, Rosemary Gray/+Sasha (Dalmatian)/Probably Beechworth Cemetry/About 1970-71?/8496 8496.6: Obverse: 14. 8496.6: Reverse: Tanswells Historic Hotel/Beechworth/Upstairs Dining Room/1971/8496 8496.7: Obverse: 11. 8496.7: Reverse: Tanswells Historic Hotel/Beechworth/1st ___/Antique Lounge/About 1970-71/8496 8496.8: Obverse: 13.tanswells commercial hotel, tanswells hotel, beechworth 1970s, william gray, antique furniture

The Hotel was constructed opposite the newly opened 'Staker's Track', a walking track , now known as the "Big Walk" was, a steep 6 hour walk, which nevertheless opened the mountain up to early tourism, attracting leading figures from Melbourne Society as well as significant artists, Naturalists and Scientists eager to explore and experience the unique scenery and geological features of the Mountain. Baron Von Mueller as Government botanist was one of the first white men to ascend to the plateau in 1853, collecting alpine specimens . Cabbage Tree was a small locality to the east of Orbost in East Gippsland, approximately half-way between Orbost and Cann River. During the early 1900s, hotels such as this one were very important because they provided accommodation, food and drink, and often a post-office, at fairly regular distances along travelling routes. The historic Cabbage Tree Hotel was a vital watering place in East Gippsland, Victoria, catering to travellers along the Princes Highway from the early 1900s until it was destroyed by a devastating bushfire on Tuesday, 14 December 1943.This photograph is significant because it is an early photograph of the Cabbage Tree Hotel, East Gippsland, Victoria.A b/w photograph/postcard of two horse-drawn carriages/wagons and a group of men, women and children - all posed in front of a timber building. The wooden dresser came from the Terminus Hotel in High St., Wodonga. In 1873, James Thompson Hatch built the two-storeyed Terminus Hotel at 79 Sydney Road (later known at High Street), then sold it to George Day and Kenneth McLennan for £1,230. It was first licensed to J. G. Morton in January 1874. In 1879, Annie Allen, from Ireland, took over as licensee of the hotel containing 14 rooms, after she and her husband, George James Allen, purchased it. He became licensee in 1883. Under the Allens, the Terminus became, ‘a principal rendezvous for visitors to the town.’ September 1888 saw additions to the building that included a billiard room, a dining room, and 18 other rooms. Following the death of her husband in 1889, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the licence was transferred to William Carkeek. In the early 1900s the Hotel was thoroughly renovated. The Terminus Hotel was for sale by auction on 5th March 1909. It comprised about 50 rooms, a two-storey building built of brick and iron with hot and cold water service and acetylene gas throughout. The principal hotel in Wodonga, was let from 1st January 1909 on a seven years’ lease at a rental of £9 per week. 1935 saw extensive improvements by proprietor W. P. Kinney, while in 1941 further extensive improvements were carried out to make a good hotel better. A pall of shock and disbelief descended over Wodonga’s historic Terminus Hotel on 1st June 1998 when it was destroyed by fire then demolished in 1999. The site was sold for almost $1 million and redeveloped for a medical clinic. historic significant post verandahsNational Trust - Letter dated 26/03/1971, to Town Clerk, A.J. Watts, from S.R. Birch, Administrator of National; Trust of Australia (Victoria)re: Suburban Hotel, Corner Whitehills Road & Gleeson Street, Bendigo. Letter brings to Council's attention the planned alterations to the hotel facade, with endeavors to retain the historic appearance of the hotel's exterior, namely the verandah which runs on both frontages. The verandah is within the Whitehills title boundary but not along the Gleeson Street frontage. This portion of the verandah is not on the City's existing By-Law on post supported verandahs; and therefore, consider excluding the Gleeson Street verandah from the By-Law provisions. Removal of this portion of the verandah affects the appearance of the hotel and is worthy of retention.removal of non-cantilever verandahs and replacement with cantilever verandahs
