"The State Battery was the central component in the gold mining of this area from the 1920s. The battery crushed the gold bearing quartz extracted from the mines and was a sizeable weatherboard building enclosing the engine and stampers. All that now remains are the bases for the machinery that comprised the battery, one timber and a couple of concrete bases and the nearby dam, which supplied water. Nillumbik Now and Then takes the reader on a journey from when the Aboriginal people were this area's sole inhabitnats, to the present day. Nillumbik's history - told in this collection of 96 stories, which are nearly all based on sites - mirrors those of the wider Australian community. It includes tales of the Wurundjeri people, a former convict, farmers, a bushranger, gold-mining, soldiers, artists, intellectuals, environmentalists and sportspeople. Each story is illustrated with a photograph. As a journalist with the former Diamond Valley News, Marguerite Marshall wrote a series of articles on local places of historic interest, later published as the small book "Eltham Shire - Historic Buildings and Places". Many years later an expanded version was published under the title "Nillumbik Now and Then". This is a much larger version of "Nillumbik Now and Then", including significant rewriting and many additional articles. The new publication was made possible by financial support from the Victorian Public Records Office, Bendigo Bank and Nillumbik Shire Council. EDHS and other historical societies in Nillumbik assisted with content for many of the stories. The book was launched at the Eltham Library on Wednesday 19th November 2008. The Central Deborah Gold Mine, 76 Violet Street, Bendigo, was developed from 1939 and operated as a working mine until 1954. The mine was one of a minority that continued to function during the Second World War. In 1939 the mine boasted a small timber poppet head, boiler steam winch, compressor, blacksmith shop, store, change rooms, and offices. Between 1945-46 the company upgraded the mine with extensions to sheds and the installation of new steam machinery, electric air compressor, steel poppet head, and ore bins. The New Bendigo Gold Project began surface workings at the Carshalton site in Kangaroo Flat, in 1998. A decline tunnel was constructed and designed to reach a depth of 800 m below the surface, passing underneath historic workings. Diamond Hill was a gold mining village 5 km south of Bendigo and about 1 km west of the Spring Gully Reservoir. Its location is now inaccessible and within the water catchment area. Diamond Hill was reputedly named after a diamond shaped rock on the hill. With the development of mining companies which employed workers with families, a school was needed by 1873 and one was opened at the beginning of the next year. The mining companies included Great Comet Quartz Mining, Golden Fleece Quartz Mining, Albert Tribute, Glasgow Golconda, and Albert Gold Mining and Crushing. Mining continued beyond 1900, as recorded in the Australian handbook, 1903. The Bendigo Mining N.L. company was located nearby, adjoining Ham Street. The Central Deborah Gold Mine is historically significant for its ability to demonstrate the tangible and important links to twentieth century quartz mining. It is of outstanding historical significance as the last intact and working example of the 5,500 quartz mines that won Bendigo widespread fame as a gold mining centre. At one time Bendigo had the world’s deepest shafts. Of particular importance are original buildings, fittings and mining machinery that document the mine’s character from 1939 to 1954. (Criterion A) The Central Deborah Gold Mine is archaeologically significant for its ability and potential to illustrate important aspects of early twentieth century mining. The physical evidence at the site has excellent interpretative value and the ability to answer archaeological research questions. (Criterion C) The Central Deborah Gold Mine is significant as a notable and fine example of the class of twentieth century quartz mine. The working machinery—including a Cornish boiler, winding engine and two compressors—comprise one of the few publicly accessible and in situ collections in the State. Central Deborah Company Gold Mine is now a popular tourist mine and a living part of the story of gold mining in Australia. Steve Gibbons, Federal Member for Bendigo, suggests selling non-heritage parts of the Fortuna Villa property to fund maintenance of the historic mansion, ornamental lake, and mining battery. Non-heritage areas could be subdivided for private housing and possibly a health or aged-care facility. A new road connecting Marble and Chum streets could open up the site for these developments. The land west of the heritage lake and buildings is proposed for housing, while the corner of Chum and Booth streets is suggested for a health or aged-care facility. Gibbons emphasizes that only the original George Lansell property and its historic buildings are of heritage value; army-era buildings are not. He proposes that proceeds from development and ongoing rates be set aside to fund future maintenance of the heritage assets. Gibbons insists the mansion should remain in public ownership to preserve George Lansell's legacy and avoid burdening taxpayers or ratepayers. He is open to other ideas for the property's future use but stresses the need for a sustainable funding source. While early proposals to turn the historic Fortuna Villa Estate into a public arts precinct (similar to Melbourne's Abbotsford Convent) gained community traction, the site has transitioned. The iconic gold rush mansion and grounds at 22 Chum Street is now a private residence and exclusive community space for the neighboring residential development, offering public functions and high teas by booking. The Tomkinson Group gained approval in 2016 to provide key town planning, engineering, surveying and project management services for the redevelopment of Bendigo’s iconic Fortuna Villa. They have been involved in consultation with Heritage Victoria, Council Planning, Heritage & Engineering, Environmental, Landscape and Heritage consultants all working cooperatively towards a sensitive urban renewal residential design for the site. The planning permit application was approved in 2016 and construction is set to start in late 2017. The residential development is great opportunity for the proposed re-invigoration of Bendigo’s historic “Fortuna Villa”, and Tomkinson Group is proud to be an integral part of the process. The concept consists of 79 high end architecturally designed townhouses, built to subtly enjoy the beautiful views and acres of parkland once part of the mansion estate. Metal plaque, gold writing, erected at the site of the former North Deborah Gold Mine when the brick chimney was restored by Bendigo Mining NL. The plaque reads: 'The North Deborah Gold Mine, 1937-1954. The North Deborah Gold mine was established on this site on the 28th May 1937. For an initial cost of 2,000 pounds to erect the plant, plus capital of 37,500 pounds, the North Debnorah proved to be the most abundant and profitable of all the post Second War mines in Bendigo. The North Deborah produced 128,000 ounces of gold from 1937 to its closure on 23rd December 1954. When mine manager E.J. White closed the doors that day he signaled the end to a great story of gold discovery and production. The North Deborah was the last mine to operate on the Bendigo goldfield during the initial golden era. It was not until the new century that gold mining would return. This historic chimney was restored by Bendigo Mining Limited in 2006. Along with the poppet head. It is the only visible surface remains of the original North Deborah Mine.'
