This book is an autobiography of George Meudell (1860-1936). He spent about six years in Warrnambool as a young boy when his father came to Warrnambool as the Manager of the Bank of Victoria. Meudell went to the Warrnambool Common School 646. He later became well-known in Melbourne in social, economic and political affairs. He was a company promoter, stockbroker and writer and an acquaintance of most of the influential and wealthy people of the time. In 1928 Meudell wrote an article for the Royal Historical Society of Victoria Journal detailing his memories of Warrnambool and this article is now a very important piece of local social history. He was enthusiastic about the benefits of living in Warrnambool in the 1860s and 70s. Meudell’s book, ‘The Pleasant Career of a Spendthrift, was an important publication as it gave a complete account of the commercial morality of the power brokers in the financial world - those concerned with the land boom and the banks’ crash of 1886-1893. The book was so inflammatory that it was initially withdrawn from sale. This book is of considerable interest as it was written by George Meudell who lived in Warrnambool in the 1860s and 70s and played a part in Warrnambool’s history by writing about these years. The book is also of wider interest as it has some information on people connected with Warrnambool’s history, including John Archibald and Thomas Bent. The signature in the front of the book is of no known relevance to Warrnambool.This is a hard cover book of 282 pages. The cover is red with black printing and the spine is very faded. The book has a foreword and twelve chapters of text. This is the autobiography of Jill Suggett, born 1940, the daughter of Lindsay and Enid Suggett of Warrnambool. She suffered from cerebral palsy and, in later life, bi-polar disorder. Despite this she lived a rich and active life, becoming a librarian and publishing several books. She was a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and was the newsletter editor for the Society from 1968 to 1976 and was a Life Member of the Society. This book is of interest as it is the autobiography of Jill Suggett, a life member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society (Jill is now deceased). This is a soft cover book of 120 pages. The cover has a black background and a black, grey and white image of a girl tumbling into a cellar. The lettering on the front cover is white and on the spine it is black. On the back cover there is a printed extract from the Foreword. The book has a Foreword, 21 chapters and several black and white photographs. These photos were taken in 1950 by Bill Peel who was appointed as a secondary teacher at the newly built Mt. Beauty School in January 1950. He was the entire secondary staff for an enrolment of 4 students in Form 3 (year 9), 9 in Form 2 and 25 in Form 1. There were also 4 primary teachers as the school combined both primary and secondary education. He was provided with accommodation at the staff hostel (Mt. Beauty Chalet). A autobiography is also enclosed describing his 12 months as a teacher in Mt. Beauty.These photographs give a clear picture of the stage of construction of housing in both Bogong Village and Mt. Beauty in 1950. Large workmen's camps are clearly visible at both sites. Construction at Rocky Valley Dam site has just begun. They are of historical significance. This book is the autobiography of Margaret Lord, a noted Australian interior designer, journalist, colour consultant and author. Born in Warrnambool to Margaret and Henry Lord the author studied art in Melbourne and London and became an interior decorator. In the articles she wrote for the Australian Home Beautiful magazine she promoted Australian interior design and materials. Her 1924 book, ‘Interior Decoration – A Guide to Furnishing the Australian Home’, was the first Australian monograph on interior decorating. She was the first in Australia to establish the role of the interior designer consultant and in 1950 she was one of the founders of the Australian Society of Interior Designers. This book is of considerable importance as it is the autobiography of Margaret Lord, the noted Australian interior decorator and writer. She was born in Warrnambool and this is the only item we have that records her life achievement as a pioneer in Australia of interior design. This is a hard cover book of 215 pages. The hard cover is white with silver-coloured printing on the spine and the dust cover has a cream background with black and pink printing and the image of a pink rose. The Hall family resided at "Fairview" Panton Hill in the 1920s. Hall was a Eltham Shire Councilor in the 1920s and was associated with the Eltham Shire war Memorial Tower Bulding Committee from 1924 to 1926. Photocopies from "The Road to Gundagi" by Graham McInnes (Hamish Hamilton, 1965), Chapter 9 pages 132 - 153 an autobiography in which the author reminiscences about visiting the Hall family at "Fairview" in Panton Hill as a child. References also to Watson's Creek where MacPherson Robertson ("The Chocolate King") had a summer home, the Shannons, Shanhun and McLaughlin familes. Includes description of the day that Hurstbridge was declared a township (May 26th, 1924), a ralway journey, picnics and rabbiting.
