The Caulfield Contact was the official newspaper of the City of Caulfield from 1976-1994. The City of Caulfield was the Municipal Council for an area of the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, including Brighton East, Carnegie, Caulfield, Elsternwick, Gardenvale, Glen Huntly, McKinnon, Murrumbeena, Ormond and St Kilda East. Following the amalgamation of City of Caulfield and parts of the City of Moorabbin in 1994, the municipality was renamed the City of Glen Eira. Various documents and correspondence detailing the history of the house and land on the corner of Dandenong and Waiora Roads, Caulfield, known as Cantala before being demolished and the land subdivided. The first document is a typed 3 page history from Caulfield Historical Society dated 02/1974, describing the owner of the property, Septimus Miller, as well as architectural features of the house Cantala. The second document is one page of typed correspondence from T J Hart to the editor of Southern Cross, dated 01/11/1973, describing the architectural features and history of Cantala. The file also includes a copy of a typed letter from Brighton Historical Society concerning research conducted about Cantala and the subdivision and detailing the owners and occupiers of flats erected where Cantala stood. Accompanying this document is a one page handwritten note providing the same details. Letter written by Alan Woodbridge, grandson of Caulfield builder J.E Morgans, dated 14/12/1992 (two sheets, handwritten, plus type writer duplicate). Woodbridge recalls that he lived at 16 Stanley Park front 1942 to 1954, attended Caulfield North Central School from 1940 to 1950, sold newspapers as a lad at Balaclava Junction, and played lacrosse for Caulfield, like his uncle Eddy Morgans before him. This file contains four items: 1/A black and white photocopy of a letter dated either 07/08/1889 or 09/08/1889, from Robert Lundon to an unidentified recipient discussing an agreement reached between the author – on behalf of the recipient – and Soon Hang Hi in regard, in regards to the allotment known as Webber’s. The agreement is outlined in the letter in what appears to be Chinese characters, and includes the marks of Robert Lundon and Soon Hang Hi. File note from Joy Wu states that the calligraphy is not Mandarin or traditional Chinese. 2/Three sheets of hand-written working notes with information taken from the Victorian Government Gazette on THE ROSSTOWN AND MURRUMBEENA LAND COMPANY LIMITED, THE ROSSTOWN JUNCTION RAILWAY AND PROSPERITY COMPANY LIOMITED, and THE ROSSTOWN JUNCTION, ELSTERNWICK, AND OAKLEIGH RAILWAY COMPANY LIMITED, covering dates between 1887 and 1894. There are two documents of correspondence covering a brief history and the establishment in 1863of Caulfield Common School, Glenhuntly Road. 1.The first is a photocopy of a hand written letter with attachments to thr Board of Education dated 16/03/1864 from T.W. Watts (Hall of Commerce). The attachment gives more detail about the history and establishment of the Caulfield Common School. 2.The second document is a photocopy of the school’s correspondence from 1865. The third document is an article from Melbourne Weekly Bayside 09/05/2012. This file contains four items: 1/Two typed lists of the names and years of circulation of Elsternwick and Caulfield Newspapers held at the Caulfield Library, the first with amendments in ballpoint pen and the second a revised version of the first dated 12/07/1988. Also included in the item is a typed list of what appears to be issues of the Southern Cross newspaper held at the library and an original handwritten list with a black and white photocopy of newspapers held at the Caulfield Library, dated 11/09/1988. These were provided by Gladys Vallati (longtime member; Head Librarian of Caulfield Library for many years). 2/Two extracts from the Caulfield Historical Society Newsletters (issues April 1975 No 15 and June 1975 No 16) detailing newspapers published and or circulated in Caulfield that are held at the State Library of Victoria, both undated and author unknown. The first has some handwritten annotations and a minute from the first meeting of the Caulfield Road Board on 25/11/1857 on the reverse side, listing the surnames of those present. Also included in the item is a typed draft for one of the extracts. 3/A six page handwritten list of newspapers circulated in the area of Caulfield held in Australian libraries, taken from a Union List dated 1967 in the Canberra National Library, author unknown. Details given of the newspapers include the title and dates of issue, in some cases also listing the merging of newspapers and ceasing of publication. This file contains one item: 1/A draft of a plan for a museum exhibit from the Spirit of Enquiry Workbook, by Denis Shephard, and dated 07/08/2007, pertaining to alternative energy research within the suburbs of Melbourne between 1950 and 1980. Much of the content is irrelevant to Glen Eira. However; one of the two principle subjects of the exhibit, discussed between pages 20 and 28, is the work of Ted Pritchard, who was based out of Caulfield. Ted and his father, Arnold Pritchard, aspired to reinvent the steam engine for use within the contemporary era. To that end, they fitted a Chevrolet pickup truck with one of their prototypes – with the result being one of the main items constituting the exhibit. Ted’s interest in steam power had been spurred by a working tabletop model of a steam engine that Arnold built for him – which constitutes another of the exhibit’s items. Also included is a brief history of the development of Caulfield.
