A set of 89 Photographs, maps and information sheets produced as a case study of the moving of the town of Tallangatta in the 1950s. It was created as a resource to enable secondary school students to investigate how towns can change over time. non-fictionThe Tallangatta pastoral run was established in 1838. By the 1850s a thriving town had been established near the junction of the Mitta Mitta River and Tallangatta Creek. Officially named in 1854, Tallangatta became a vital gateway to nearby goldfields such as Mount Wills, Mitta Mitta, and Cravensville. It also grew as a service centre to the pastoralists in the surrounding area. Rail reached Tallangatta in 1891, doubling the population within a decade. A mile-long viaduct took two years to complete. The railway brought jobs and connected local mining and farming industries to broader markets. From 1918, Tallangatta's future was uncertain. Plans for a reservoir at the confluence of the Mitta Mitta and Murray Rivers threatened the town. Stage one of Lake Hume was completed in 1936, sparing the town temporarily. After WWII, demand for irrigation water rose—and residents were told the town would be flooded. Between 1952 and 1958, Tallangatta was relocated. The State Rivers and Water Supply Commission oversaw the move with a £3 million budget. Over 100 timber homes were relocated, 37 brick homes rebuilt, and 74 prefabricated houses brought in. Thirty-five new buildings were added, including hotels, banks, a butter factory, a hospital, and a modern shopping centre. The new town of Tallangatta was officially reopened by Governor Sir William Slim on June 29, 1956. Tawonga's first recorded game was against Yackandandah in 1893 at Tawonga. Tawonga folded up in 1957 enabling Bogong to have 2 teams, the firsts and seconds in 1958. Bogong merged with Dederang in 1976 and became the Dederang-Mt Beauty Football Club. Bogong joined the Yackandandah league in 1947. In 1954 Bogong entered the Ovens & King League. In 1960 Bogong United was in the Tallangatta League with Tallangatta, Kiewa, Kergunyah, Dederang, Lavington, Bandiana, Bullioh, Mitta United, Barnawartha, Sandy Creek and Yackandandah. The Kiewa league was formed in 1923. In the 1930's Tawonga was in the Chiltern League then the Dederang League, then the Yackandandah League and then the Tallangatta League.The papers are a primary source of the history of the Bogong, Tawonga, Dederang and Mt Beauty Football Clubs. Private Harry Nutman Derrick, a native of Tallangatta Valley in NE Victoria served with the 37th Australian Infantry Battalion 10th Brigade, 3rd Division AIF. He was wounded on three occasions. On the third occasion he was captured near the village of Clery on 30 August 1918. He died in a German military hospital on 12 November 1918 the day following the Armistice. A transcribed copy of the diary is held in the Local History Section of the Albury LibraryMuseum.This diary documents the day-to-day activities of a private soldier of the AIF during almost two years at war including two occasions on which he was wounded and evacuated to England. The 8th Light Horse was initially raised from companies of the colonial Victorian Mounted Rifles located in North-east Victoria following Federation. In 1912 a major reorganisation of the Australian military forces resulted in the regiment being renumbered 16th Light Horse. The Regiment was disbanded in 1919 but soon after was re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, with the territorial title Indi Light Horse. The Indi Light Horse consisted of 3 squadrons. A squadron consisted of troops in Corryong, Walwa, Tallangatta, Eskdale and Wodonga. After an extensive recruiting campaign in January 1939 a new troop was raised in Bethanga, Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This photograph is of Ilma Margaret Ernestine Haeusler (née Tasker, b.1900 in Tallangatta), mother of Alf Haeusler who was born in 1922. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history, and women’s history. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this publication include:- Page 14: In evidence before the State Development Committee at Mt. Beauty, Tom Mitchell outlined the need for further construction of roads in the area and stated a case for the development of an alpine village to be established at Falls Creek. He also suggested that the question of ski tows be left to the ski clubs, but that the Government consider the installation of a chair-hoist at Spion Kopje.
