The hat was picked up at sea by a German Sailor serving on the blockade runner RAMSES. It was giver to RAN sailor A. Tarr when HMAS Adelaide rescued survivors after the sinking of the RAMSES. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare provided some information about Shigeyoshi Higuchi. He was a sailor but did not serve on a ship. After WWII, he returned safely home to his family.This hat is significant as a tangible connection to wartime service by Japanese sailor Shigeyoshi Higuchi.A dark blue circular velvet hat lined with black cotton on the inside with four studs. A square label with printed and hand written Japanese characters is attached to the underside of the hat.Part of the label has been translated from Japanese into English. It indicates the owner of the hat was Shigeyoshi Higuchi, who was based in Nagasaki Sasebo. His military number was (some kanji) and 1274. Wooden framed photograph of HMAS Adelaide. Lead ship of six Guided Missile Frigates (FFGs) to enter service with Royal Australian Navy. Service # 01. Adelaide's keel was laid on 29th July 1977. She was launched on 21st January 1978. Adelaide had beam of 13.70 metres. Draught of 7.50 metres and a length of 138.10 metres.

Removed from HMAS Canberra before being scuttled. HMAS Canberra was an Adelaide class guided missile frigate of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Based on the Oliver Hazard Perry class design, Canberra was one of four Adelaide class ships constructed in the United States of America, and one of six to serve in the RAN. The frigate entered service in 1981. During her career, Canberra was assigned to escort the Royal Yacht Britannia during Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 1988, helped enforce the post-Gulf War United Nations' sanctions against Iraq during 1992 and 1993, was part of the Australian responses to the 1998 Indonesian riots and the 2000 Solomon Islands Civil War, and returned to the Persian Gulf in 2002 as part of the War in Afghanistan. In 2005, Canberra became the first ship of her class to be decommissioned. The frigate was marked for conversion into a dive wreck and artificial reef off Barwon Heads, Victoria, and was scuttled on 4 October 2009. HMAS Melbourne (1912), a Chatham class light cruiser launched in 1912 and broken up for scrap in 1929 HMAS Melbourne (R21), a Majestic class aircraft carrier acquired by the RAN in 1947. She was involved in two major collisions during her career, and was sold for scrap in 1985. HMAS PARRAMATTA had active service during the Vietnam War,escorting the troop transport HMAS SYDNEY to Vietnam in 1965,1968 and 1971. She also served on patrol duties between 1964 and 1966 during the Indonesian Confrontation. In July 1976 PARRAMATTA was diverted to the Indonesian of Bali to provide humanitarian relief following an earthquake which killed over 500 Balinese and injured another 3,000. PARRAMATTA was decommissioned in 1991 as the River Class Destroyer Escorts were replaced by the Adelaide Class Guided Missile Frigates. This photograph is of 2/4th Independent Company A.I.F Timor 1942-43.This Company was formed in December and posted to Katherine, NT, in March 1942. The Company was deployed to areas between McArthur and Ord Rivers and in August moved to Adelaide River. The HMAS Sydney FFG 03 was an Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate of the Royal Australia Navy. She was constructed in the United States of America and was launched in 1980.
