The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. This medallion, called a Memorial Plaque and popularly known as a Dead Man’s Penny, was one of those given to the family of an Australian soldier who died on active service in World War One. Memorial Plaques, such as this one, were given out in the early 1920s. This medallion was presented to the family of Robert Andrew Hose. Born in Warrnambool in 1892 to George and Janet Hose, Robert Hose was a regular soldier when he enlisted in World War One in August 1914. He served on Gallipoli at Cape Helles where he was wounded but returned to his post and was promoted to corporal. In Egypt he was promoted to Sergeant and then served in France where he was awarded the Military Medal for showing courage, resourcefulness and a fine example to his men in an encounter with the enemy near Beaumetz les Cambrai. In that incident he sustained severe wounds from which he died in May 1917. He is buried in France. As well as the Military Medal he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory MedalThis item is of great importance as a significant memento of World War One that was given to the family of Robert Andrew Hose following his death on active service in World War One. This police baton or truncheon is typical of the ones used by police in Australia perhaps late in the 19th century or early in the 20th century. No information has yet been found as to the identity of the owner or the significance of the letters, ‘A P 1304’. There are several possibilities as the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum which operated from the 1870s to the 1960s included several police batons. The owner of this baton is not known but is retained pending further research.This is a wooden police baton. The rounded body is tapered towards the top and it has an incised ridge near the top and a knob on the top to form a handle. The ridge at the top may be for holding a string or rope to carry the baton on the wrist. The wood has been varnished but it is now much worn and discoloured. These items have no known provenance and no information has been found on the Barnards on the printing blocks, delivery paper and stamps. The stamp for ‘W.I.O. Barnard’ was sent to an address in Camberwell so it is presumed that the Barnard family members were in Melbourne and not in the Warrnambool district.The only interest in these items is in the printing blocks and stamps. They are good examples of the type of printing used in the early 20th century and the type of stamp used by individuals for letterheads, visiting cards, personal items etc. There are 5 objects in this collection:- 1. This is a set of three photographs of students and staff attending an Initial Employment Training (IET) Printing Technician course held in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo taken in September 1990. The photos were taken in Fortuna’s gym/changing rooms (formerly Fortuna’s Stables). Although these photos are not annotated, the trainees are positively identified as they are holding name plates.
