Japanese Commanders crossing a pontoon bridge under guard by Australian soldier on the way to the official surrender of Japanese forces in Balikpapan in (Dutch East Indies) Indonesia 1945. This was a major event in the ending of World War 2. Following the japanese surrender the Local population began it push for independance. The Japanese landing bardge has the required surrender markings which is a green square with a white cross on top right of photo. The Australian soldier following the Japanese soldiers is wearing slouch hat and gungle green uniform. Tan earthenware bottle with cork stopper with plastic top. Inscribed around shoulder: ERVEN LUCAS BOLS ‘T LOOTSJE AMSTERDAM 1 LITER. On front of bottle: Upper label Z.O. GENEVER = very old gin. The name BOLS in bold black diagonally across the label. Description in Dutch and English . Smaller lower label with serving suggestions in 6 languages except Dutch. Back of bottle: label stating again this is a very old gin and a barcode which suggests a relatively recent date of manufacture. beverage

At the outbreak of war in 1939 Perth was serving in the West Indies. She served with distinction at Cape Matapan against Italy. Perth suffered damage from an air attack while berthed in Malta. Perth evacuated troops from Greece to Crete when Crete was invaded by the Germans When Japan entered the war in December 1941 Perth was sent to Java in the Dutch East Indies - now Indonesia. Perth's total complement was 681, of these 353 including Captain Hector Waller D.S.O were lost in action, 4 died ashore and 324 fell into Japanese hands.
