Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. Their widespread distribution means that they are frequently significant at a local, state, national and international level.Photographs accompanied an article in ‘Table Talk’ in October 1916 on the sale of buttons labelled ‘Please Help the Hospitals’ . The Commonwealth Button Fund supported the appeal. In the photographs, all of the collectors are holding tins with the Red Cross logo on them. An Article in The Herald (18 Feb 1931) records that: "FAIRVIEW OFFICIALS - AT the annual meeting of the Associates of the Fairview Golf Club the following office bearers were elected: President, Miss A, Simcocks; secretary, Miss B. Williamson; captain, Miss A. Shiells; committee, Misses Tresise, Walters, Brown and McLachlan. The captain reported that the shield presented by Mr and Mrs Bourne for competition among the clubs associated with the metropolitan mental hospitals had been won by Fairview associates, who will hold it for one year."The trophy has historical significance as an item associated with the Melbourne Mental Hospital in the 1930s and also of social significance in that it relates to recreational pursuits undertaken by staff of the Hospital.Wood and silver plate shield won by the ladies team of Fairview Golf Club in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. The Golf Club was established in 1928, and was owned and managed as part of the Kew Mental Hospital. The original Tawonga District Hospital was situated at the corner of Ryders Lane and Kiewa Valley Highway. The construction was initiated by the Hospital and Charities Commission with considerable assistance from the SEC. The building was transported from Bonegilla where it was originally part of the Bonegilla Military Hospital. It was officially opened on September 24, 1949. The Holmbush committee sent a form to register Holmbush under the Charities Act with a cover letter dated 2nd June 1943. The reply was received from the Charities Board of Victoria confirming registration, dated 9th June 1943. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. Copies of photos of the No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital set up in the ground of Harefield Park during the first World War. They were wooden huts. Also the graves of the deceased soldiers in the Australian Military Cemetery in 1919 in Harefield's St Mary's churchyard. Plus two photos of the Mansion at Harefield one in 1917 and one from 1927. Harefield Park was owned by Australian couple, Letitia Billyard-Leake (born Letitia Leake) and her husband Charles Billyard and their 4 children. The family donated their property, Harefield Park, to the Australian Government for use as an Australian-run hospital. The family moved off the property and lived nearby to help run the hospital. Letitia and her daughter, also named Letitia, ran the canteen while Charles Billyard organised activities and was a hospital board member. (from research from Carol Grbich and John Berger). During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. This book by C.E. Sayers details the history of the Royal Women's Hospital from the time of its foundation as the Lying In Hospital in 1856.It includes information on doctors and nurses and managerial staff connected with the hospital. Some Warrnambool medical staff in the past have been connected with the Women's Hospital. Apart from its detailing of the history of an important institution in Victoria, this book is of particular interest to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society because William Dixon Saltau (1894-1970), born in Warrnambool, was the Medical Superintendent of the Women’s Hospital from 1924 to 1951. Dr Saltau was the son of Marcus Saltau (M.L.A.) and his wife Jean and the grandson of Henry Saltau who came to Australia in 1860 and who founded in the 1870s the Warrnambool firm of Saltau and Son, general carriers, coal, wood and produce merchants and forwarding agents. Dr Saltau’s father Marcus was Mayor of Warrnambool and a generous benefactor of the Warrnambool Hospital (Marcus Saltau House and Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward). Dr Saltau was educated at Warrnambool Academy (Richard Lawson, Headmaster), Scotch College, Melbourne and Melbourne University. He specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology and practised in England, Adelaide and Melbourne. .This book is of general historical interest as it describes the history of the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and because a Warrnambool identity, Dr William Dixon Saltau, was the Medical Superintendent of this hospital for 25 years. His name is listed in this book. This is a soft-cover book of 170 pages printed in 1976 and giving the history of the first 100 years of the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne. It has a white cover of thick paper with the emblem of the hospital on the front in blue, red, black and white. There is also a dust cover with the same material on it. The book has 26 Chapters and ten Appendices, an Index, a Foreword and an Introduction. In the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme the State Electricity Commission took over the financial and construction responsibility of the Tawonga District General Hospital building at a cost of 27,000 pounds. This included the removal and re-erection of the ex-military Bonegilla ward from Wodonga while in addition they carried out all the necessary building works that allowed the hospital to operate as a functional unit. The work was completed and handed over to the Hospital Committee of Management on September 1, 1949. Local residents raised 3,400 pounds through fund raising. The balance was met by the SEC and the Hospital and Charities Commission. The initial project was to provide for a basic temporary hospital which was later to include an Operating Theatre, Offices, Store, Mortuary and a Nurse’s Home, until the establishment of a permanent medical premises. Following the opening, 455 patients were admitted to the Tawonga District General Hospital and 254 operations were performed in the first year. The hospital relocated to Mount Beauty in the former SEC administration offices located in the town centre. Official opening of the 18 bed Tawonga District General Hospital on April 29 in 1961. Alpine Health CEO Mr Lyndon Seys oversaw the opening of the new Mount Beauty Hospital in November 2001 alongside Board of Management President Mr Andrew Randell, other board members and politicians.
