The site has a long history of industrial use including, Raleigh’s Boiling‑Down Works (1848–1853), Melbourne Meat Preserving Company (1868–1886), Australian Frozen Meat Export Company (1880–1882) and Hume Pipe Company (1912–1978). The Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works purchased the site in 1978 for conversion to parkland and the Pipemakers Park officially opened in 1987–1988. One bluestone building was refurbished and leased to Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West. The park is now managed by the City of Maribyrnong (since 2014)Pipemakers Park is significant because it is one of the most complete surviving industrial heritage landscapes in Melbourne, a place where 130 years of Australian manufacturing, export innovation, and working‑class history are still physically visible in one location. Another early major contract for ROCLA was with the Victorian State Rivers and Water Supply Commission for the provision of pipes for the new sewerage system in the new town of Tallangatta, relocated due to the enlargement of the Hume Weir. ...ROCLA was founded by two friends, Walter Robertson and Heaton Clarke, who combined the first letters of their surnames to create the brand name in 1922. The company first came to the Albury – Wodonga area in late 1927 when tenders were called for the construction of their works and office in Kiewa Street, Albury. They were a popular provider of concrete pipe culverts and reinforced concrete troughs for farm use. In 1949 ROCLA began operations at Bandiana. Initially this was to produce pipes for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme which officially began construction on 17 October 1949. They also provided pipes for the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Another early major contract for ROCLA was with the Victorian State Rivers and Water Supply Commission for the provision of pipes for the new sewerage system in the new town of Tallangatta, relocated due to the enlargement of the Hume Weir. This contract called for the supply of 21,000 six inch pipes and 7,000 nine inch pipes. At this time ROCLA employed 15 men and this job required about 80 bags of cement per day. By 1964 ROCLA Concrete Pipes was Wodonga’s largest secondary industry. A new concrete pole manufacturing plant was established in the early 1980s. ROCLA poles also dot the landscape in several Australian States. ROCLA poles also hold up many of the Hume Freeway bridge and support the Union Bridge which crosses the Murray River at Albury. After various changes in management, ROCLA was taken over by New Zealand's Fletcher Building group in 2005. In September 2021 ROCLA became part of the Civilmart Group. These images are significant because they record the history of a major manufacturing industry in Wodonga.A collection of photographs and advertisements representing the ROCLA, Wodonga company.manufacturing industries wodonga, rocla wodonga, wodonga industries -

... Princess Alexandra, led by a pipe band was driven along the Hume Highway and High Street which were lined by thousands of people including school children. ...Princess Alexandra, led by a pipe band was driven along the Hume Highway and High Street which were lined by thousands of people including school children. ...This flag is a memento produced for Princess Alexandra of Kent's visit to Wodonga in 1959. Princess Alexandra visited Australia as the representative of Queen Elizabeth II for the Queensland Centenary Celebrations. Her six-week visit began with her arrival in Canberra on 14th August and she departed from Canberra on 26th September. Time spent in Australia included three weeks in Queensland. Her Royal Highness' visits to New South Wales and Victoria were comparatively brief and informal. In New South Wales she made two country visits including to Albury and a night spent at Bungowannah Park near Jindera. Her visit to Victoria began in Wodonga where she officially opened the Pollard Archway over the Causeway. She received an enthusiastic welcome as she approached the Archway accompanied by a motorcycle escort. As Princess Alexander stepped forward to take the scissors from a red plush case, her Lady-in-Waiting, Lady Moyra Hamilton, tugged at the Princess' sleeve, whispered, and gave her a coin. The Princess handed the coin (a halfpenny) to the Wodonga Shire President, Cr J. S. Hore, saying: "I must give you this, otherwise it might be unlucky." The halfpenny "gift" stems from an old English superstition that a "sharp" gift such as a knife or scissors must be dulled with copper or else a friendship will be lost. After cutting the ribbon and declaring the Pollard Arch, named in honour of Councillor Charles Pollard M.B.E., she was presented with a bouquet by 10-year-old Leslie McLeod. Princess Alexandra, led by a pipe band was driven along the Hume Highway and High Street which were lined by thousands of people including school children. After a short trip along High Street and Elgin Street to the Railway Station she departed from protocol to speak to the many children who had crossed the barricade. Princess Alexandra then boarded the Royal Train for her journey to Melbourne. This item is significant because it represents the visit to Wodonga of Princess Alexandra in 1959.A small purple flag with gold lettering and a symbol of the Pollard Arch in Wodonga. It is triangular in shape and attached to a thin wooden stick.Royal Tour Princess Alexandra Wodonga September 1959princess alexandra, royal visit 1959 wodonga -

Her six week visit began with her arrival in Canberra on 14th August 14 and she departed from Canberra on 26th September. Time spent in Australia included 3 weeks in Queensland. As Princess Alexander stepped forward to take the scissors from a red plush case, her Lady-in- Waiting, Lady Moyra Hamilton, tugged at the Princess' sleeve, whispered and gave her a coin. The Princess handed the coin a halfpenny to the Wodonga Shire President, Cr J. S. Hore, saying: "I must give you this, otherwise it might be unlucky." (The halfpenny "gift" stems from an old English superstition that a "sharp" gift such as a knife or scissors must be dulled with copper or else a friendship will be lost. After cutting the ribbon and declaring the Pollard Arch, named in honour of Councillor Charles Pollard M.B.E. she was presented with a bouquet by 10-year old Leslie McLeod. Princess Alexandra led by a pipe band was driven along the Hume Highway and High Street which were lined by thousands of people including school children. After a short trip along High Street and Elgin Street to the Railway Station she departed from protocol to speak to the many children who had crossed the barricade. Princess Alexandra then boarded the Royal Train for her journey to Melbourne. This item is significant because it represents the visit to Wodonga of Princess Alexandra in 1959.A pair of scissors in a red box.
