After participating in events and activities in New South Wales with other clubs, the Murray Valley Hunt Club began Point-to-Point racing on "Aherlo" in 1957 at “Aherlo”, the property of Des Martin located on the outskirts of Wodonga in the Huon Creek Valley. Des Martin was the only gentleman rider with permission to ride against professional jockeys within the metropolitan area in any type of jumping race in Victoria, a distinction not since achieved by any other amateur. Des also played a major role in Australia entering an equestrian team in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and served as a steward at that event. The Hunt was officially formed with a steering committee of Messrs Crawford, J T Sullivan (Chairman of the North Eastern District Racing Association), Mr Des Martin, Harold Boon and John Hamilton-Smith. Miss Z Cox was appointed Honorary Secretary and Mr J C B Mckenzie McHarg Legal Officer. In 1960 the Hunt Club meets moved to Wodonga Racecourse then in 1967 wet conditions called for a move to Chiltern and in 1968 they successfully applied to re-open the Old Rutherglen Racecourse in 1969. Des Martin died on 12 April 1995. This photograph is significant because it captures key people responsible for the founding of the Murray Valley Hunt Club.A black and white photo of key identities at the opening of the Murray Valley Hunt ClubA. The Opening Of The Hunt Club 1988 Video...The Hunt Club...The Hunt Club is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Deer Park and a rare 19th‑century structure in Melbourne’s west. ...Opening Of Hunt Club Saturday Nov 26, 1988...Sunshine and District Historical Society Incorporated The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park 3023. ...The Hunt Club is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Deer Park and a rare 19th‑century structure in Melbourne’s west. Its story weaves together hunting culture, early white settlement of the Deer park area, explosives manufacturing, and community arts. This video features the second celebration of the opening of The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre on the 26th November 1988.A hotel was first located at this site in 1850's. Over the years the hotel has been called various names including the Kororoit Creek Hotel, the Barley Mow Hotel & Plough Hotel. This hotel was described as an old English style wooden building pub consisting of eleven rooms exclusive of a storeroom and kitchen. The current Hunt Club Hotel building was built in 1886 on the former site of the burnt down ruins of the original hotel. It is one of the few 19th Century buildings remaining in the district. The hotel was named by the members of the Melbourne Hunt Club who used the hotel as a base for their deer hunts after leasing land nearby of over 300 acres from Sir W. J. Clarke. The Hunt Club Hotel operated between 1886 and 1911. In 1911, the hotel became a private residence. In 1921, the Australian Explosives and Chemicals Co. Ltd (later ICI Australia) purchased the Hunt Club building. By the 1950s, the Hunt Club building was converted into a research and staff training centre. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the Hunt Club building. In 1985, it officially opened as the Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre. The area was initially a rural district with large pastoral estates but its location on Kororoit Creek plus its relative isolation from Melbourne, meant it was ideal for the establishment of Melbourne's first explosives factory in the 1870s. These explosives were used initially in the gold mines in Bendigo and Ballarat and then for ammunition in the World Wars. Although some factories remain in Deer Park, the area is now primarily residential Deer Park History 2003 An afternoon at The Hunt Clubdeer park, explosives factory, melbourne hunt club -

My mother (who went on to work in a bank during the second world war) learned numeracy from the picture (counting the number of white horses, tails of the dogs etc) and inherited the painting from her uncle and aunt (Douglas & Doris Milne from Colac). They were given the lithograph by the owners of one of the grand homesteads in the region who were close associates of the Milnes. My mother thought it might have been one of the Robertson homesteads ‘Corongamorah’, ‘Coraguluc’, ‘Cororooke’, ‘Glen Alvie’ or ‘The Hill’ (the attached picture legend #24 references a Mr W St J Robertson). As Executor for my mother (who died on 25 September and who was also the archivist for the Kew Historical Society for over 30 years), I can confirm that we are delighted that this much loved lithograph has returned to a place and with people who appreciate the history and provenance. Oakleigh was the favoured spot, mainly because of the railway and the unloading ramp at the station. Riders and horses arrived on special trains and hunted over the surrounding market gardens, but not without friction. After 1929, significant numbers of Hunt Club members had access to motorized horse transport and besides, Oakleigh was becoming too built up. The Hunt Club moved on to Cranbourne The club maintains the oldest continual pack of hounds in Australia. The Melbourne Hunt Club was founded 1852 by George Watson and imported foxhounds from Ireland. As the Melbourne suburbs spread the Club moved several times. 1920 it was in Oakleigh and now is possibly situated in Packenham Black & White photograph showing men riding horses with a pack of hounds coming down a dirt road .
