A black and white photo of key identities at the opening of the Murray Valley Hunt Club Murray Valley Hunt Club opening Photograph Murray Valley Hunt Club opening ...Murray Valley Hunt Club’s formation stemmed from a conversation between Messrs Ken Crawford, then of "Nooroona", Holbrook, NSW and Des Martin of "Aherlo", Wodonga where they discussed bringing hunting to the people of the district around Wodonga and Albury in 1946. After participating in events and activities in New South Wales with other clubs, the Murray Valley Hunt Club began Point-to-Point racing on "Aherlo" in 1957 at “Aherlo”, the property of Des Martin located on the outskirts of Wodonga in the Huon Creek Valley. Des Martin was the only gentleman rider with permission to ride against professional jockeys within the metropolitan area in any type of jumping race in Victoria, a distinction not since achieved by any other amateur. Des also played a major role in Australia entering an equestrian team in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and served as a steward at that event. The Hunt was officially formed with a steering committee of Messrs Crawford, J T Sullivan (Chairman of the North Eastern District Racing Association), Mr Des Martin, Harold Boon and John Hamilton-Smith. Miss Z Cox was appointed Honorary Secretary and Mr J C B Mckenzie McHarg Legal Officer. In 1960 the Hunt Club meets moved to Wodonga Racecourse then in 1967 wet conditions called for a move to Chiltern and in 1968 they successfully applied to re-open the Old Rutherglen Racecourse in 1969. Des Martin died on 12 April 1995. This photograph is significant because it captures key people responsible for the founding of the Murray Valley Hunt Club.A black and white photo of key identities at the opening of the Murray Valley Hunt ClubA. CLARKE / 12TH AUGUST 1981...It was named after the Huntly parish (1854) which was probably named after Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. ...Huntly Shire (1866-1994), north of Bendigo, was proclaimed on 13 July 1866, the successor to a road district which had been created in 1861. It was named after the Huntly parish (1854) which was probably named after Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The shire’s south-west corner adjoined Epsom (Bendigo), its eastern boundary was the Campaspe River and its northern boundary ran through Diggora West. Its area was 878 sq km, unchanged since the shire was created. The administrative centre of the shire was Huntly, nearly on the edge of Bendigo’s urban fringe. In the south of the shire there were former gold mining areas at Huntly, Fosterville and Bagshot. The Midland Highway and railway line (1864) running north-east through the shire connected Goornong and Elmore to Bendigo. Elmore was the shire’s largest town, situated in a wheat/sheep farming area. The Kamerooka State Park was in the north-west of the shire. It was amalgamated with Bendigo, Marong, Eaglehawk and Strathfieldsaye in 1994 and is now part of the City of Greater Bendigo.Shire of Huntly stirling silver hand engraved drop suspended from a ling blue masonic ribbon. Huntly Shire of Huntly Huntly Shire Council Chambers Huntly Historical Society Colour photographs of the brick Shire of Huntly building. ...The former Huntly Shire Council Chambers was constructed in 1867 as council chambers for the former shire of Huntly. The building was designed by local engineer, John O'Dwyer and constructed by builders, Hyett and Martin. The Huntly Shire was formed in July 1866 and the construction of a building in which they could hold meetings was a priority. The Council used the building for 110 years before a new chambers was opened in 1977, at which time the former chambers were leased to a local historical society for use as a museum. The one storeyed face brick building has a double hipped roof, partially concealed by parapets on three sides. The design of the building conveys a strong Lombardic influence with banded brick quoining and a large open loggia on the entrance faade formed by double banded brick columns supporting semicircular arches. The building retains much of its early furniture and fittings, including the councillors' meeting table and chairs, a series of honour boards and a photographic collection of all Huntly Shire Council councillors. The former Huntly Shire Chambers is of architectural importance to the State of Victoria. The building is of architectural importance as an unusual example of an engineer designed council chambers with many interesting design elements, including the banded brickwork, overall scale of the building and loggia. The arcade on the eastern faade is a good example of fine engineered brickwork with two levels of arches. The building is substantially intact both internally and externally.Colour photographs of the brick Shire of Huntly building. huntly, shire of huntly, huntly shire council chambers, huntly historical society -

Its story weaves together hunting culture, early white settlement of the Deer park area, explosives manufacturing, and community arts. This video features the second celebration of the opening of The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre on the 26th November 1988.A hotel was first located at this site in 1850's. Over the years the hotel has been called various names including the Kororoit Creek Hotel, the Barley Mow Hotel & Plough Hotel. This hotel was described as an old English style wooden building pub consisting of eleven rooms exclusive of a storeroom and kitchen. The current Hunt Club Hotel building was built in 1886 on the former site of the burnt down ruins of the original hotel. It is one of the few 19th Century buildings remaining in the district. The hotel was named by the members of the Melbourne Hunt Club who used the hotel as a base for their deer hunts after leasing land nearby of over 300 acres from Sir W. J. Clarke. The Hunt Club Hotel operated between 1886 and 1911. In 1911, the hotel became a private residence. In 1921, the Australian Explosives and Chemicals Co. Ltd (later ICI Australia) purchased the Hunt Club building. By the 1950s, the Hunt Club building was converted into a research and staff training centre. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the Hunt Club building. In 1985, it officially opened as the Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre.
