non-fictionIn 1995 Michael Taffe set about re-arranging a bedroom at Hymettus into a study/library where he housed the books of his parents and grandparents together with his own library collection. Michael, an avid reader, commenced collecting books in the late 1950s visiting Ballarat second-hand dealers and later attending auctions. Throughout a career in welfare, tourism, archives and education he amassed many volumes associated with his career and these together with career oriented books from earlier generations of the family were gathered with those from his other interests to form the private library at Hymettus. This is volume 1 of 45 held in the library at Hymettus cottage and bound in covers as a book, one of three volumes incorporating every edition in the series.. Life Australia was produced at Melbourne Victoria in 1967 and ran to 45 volumes when closed by the parent company in the USA in 1968. Although very American in the views espoused it was a significant step in attempting to produce a magazine of international focus in Australia. The brief period was also significant in Australia and the magazine covered events such as the Beatles visit to Australia, the seven day war in Israel, the conflict in Vietnam and the drowning of Prime Minister Harold Holt.The magazine, Life, was cosmopolitan and sophisticated in the USA and the Australian edition was identical in format, although fussing on local perspectives. it concentrated on serious current affairs and more profound cultural and political analysis, as well as a strong focus on fashion, lifestyle and nature. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, This example was commissioned from Andrew Thomas a Ballarat photographer and designer by Michael Taffe owner of Hymettus at Ballarat in the 1990s and is a computer assisted design. The third Michael Taffe to live at Hymettus cottage Ballarat was dux of his class at the local parish school, St Patrick's Drummond St in 1958 and 1959. These mass produced premium plates were a popular insertion for such awards from their inception in Europe in the eighteenth century until the late twentieth century. A fashionable tailor, William Young was located at 34 Sturt St, Ballarat, from 1903 until c. 1915. Originally from Cornwall, he took over the firm of J. Payne & Co in the Beehive store Ballarat. His advertising highlighted his expertise in tailoring in early 20th-century Ballarat, one example being this bookmark after the popular American style. His advertising at this address ceased in 1915 and this bookmark is of a style popular in the USA in the first decade of the twentieth century.The oldest bookmark from Ballarat dating to c.1905, and of a type rare in Australia.
