Arthur Ernest served in the Army (3724) enlisting on, 08/08/1915 in Boulder, WA before being discharged from duties with the 12 REINFORCEMENTS/11 BATT as a Army Non-Commissioned Private (PTE) on 03/06/1919. His next of kin is Emma KIPPS. Arthur Ernest BLAKE was not a prisoner of war. These baskets were used to store dresses for travelling eg. to Melbourne or Albury either by train or on a coach, a carriage or on the back of an early motor car (eg. on the dicky seat - an upholstered exterior seat) Owned and used by Clare Roper's mother in 1900. Clare lived on a farm in the Kiewa Valley. The Roper family was one of the early settlers of the Kiewa Valley Two wicker, rectangular baskets, one big and one small held together, one on top of the other, by a leather strap and handle. A group of items including an identification tag on a leather wrist strap, flask and boot hook. Also a circular ID tag possibly made to be worn around the neck. Also a Ypres souvenir that seems incomplete. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. Possibly these were with him during his time in the First World War and he kept them as a mementos. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.
