George Langley, a teacher from Port Melbourne, embarked from Melbourne onboard HMAT Ulysses on 10th May 1915. Commanded the Australian units of the Imperial Camel Corps and later was CO of the 14th Light Horse. Returned to Australia in July 1919. The 8th Light Horse Regiment was engaged in the battle to capture Turkish defences at Tel El Khuweifle 16 Kilometres north of Beersheba from 1 to 6 November 1917. Other units were drawn from Imperial Camel Corps, British Yeomanry Division, New Zealand Mounted Rifles and 53 Welsh Division. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. Banner was souvenired by Trooper Frank J. Fry, 3rd ALH Regiment No 2315. Trooper Fry also served in the Imperial Camel Corps in Palestine from 1916 to mid 1918 when he rejoined the 3rd ALH Regiment White silk banner featuring the flags of eight WW1 allied nations (Great Britian, France, Belgium, Japan, Serbia, Italy, Russia, Egypt.) The flags surround a raised life buoy over an embroidered anchor. Inside the life buoy is space for a photograph. At the bottom of the banner is a gold coloured rectangular frame housing a coloured print of a naval battle. The banner is topped with "Victory for the Allies."Over an embroidered King's Crown Banner is mounted on cardboard and covered with a clear cellophane Embroidered on top of banner. This book contains the story of the Australian Companies of the Imperial Camel Corps in the First World War. The authors are George and Edmee Langley. George Langley (1891-1972) was the principal of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He and his wife Edmee were prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool during that time. George Langley served with distinction in both World Wars and rose to the rank of Brigadier in 1944. He intended writing the history of the Australian Camel Corps but died before he could complete the work. Edmee Langley, herself a talented journalist and writer, used her husband’s collection of letters, diaries and writings to publish Sand, Sweat and Camels.This book is of interest as it was written by George and Edmee Langley who were important Warrnambool residents in the 1920s and 30s. Extracts from Edmee’s memoirs of her time in Warrnambool are held by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a soft cover book of 188 pages. It has a brown cover with white and yellow lettering and, on the front cover, a colour image of several men riding camels. The back cover has blurbs on the two pieces of writing in the book. The book contains many black and white photographs. A photo of a wreath laying ceremony on Anzac day in Thames Embankment Gardens, Charing Cross, London in 1974 from a Comradeship album. The label identifies Legatee Rex Hall. The handwritten inscription on the back says: "In Thames Embankment Gardens, out___ by members of the Corps 1920. Placing the wreath on Anzac Day 1974. The Imperial Camel Corps fought in every battle in Sinai and Palestine and had 1600 battle casualties of which about 300 names are engraved here. The Corps was composed of 50% Australian, New Zealand troops and 50% British-English, Scottish, Welsh and Indians." The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. This photo and several others (see 01029 - 01032) of Anzac services in London are part of a photo album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items 01027 to 01036. The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places.
