Local libraries throughout Victoria hold thousands of photographs, maps, rate books, voter's roles, memorabilia, personal & public documents and other miscellaneous documents. The State Library of Victoria initiated the Memory Victoria Project which was funded by the Library Board of Victoria. The scope of the project was to try to understand the significance of local history collections held by local libraries and what would support the strategic preservation of these collections. There were three components of the project, the Significance Assessment, Conservation Workshops and Conservation Assessments. This 1989 booklet contains lists of publications connected with Warrnambool and District and it was compiled by W. Pinson and M. Johnstone. The publications listed were ones held at the time by the Warrnambool branch of the Corangamite Regional Library Service and the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education library. The publications are listed under the headings of Community, Environment, Heritage, Industry and Tourism. Although the information in this book is well out-of-date, it may be of interest to researchers today. The publications may still be available at the Warrnambool Library or at the South West College of TAFE in Timor Street Warrnambool or at Deakin University in Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet of 162 pages. It has a pale blue cover and is bound with black tape. This is a ledger from the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. It gives details of the accounts of customers from 1911 to 1941. It also has information on staff wages and years of service. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool district, erecting many buildings including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, china and glassware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling produce, seeds and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding business in Timor Street. This ledger is of great importance as it contains information on the Warrnambool business, Swintons Pty Ltd. The list of customers contains the names of many well-known Warrnambool and district people and the staff information is also of great interest. The ledger will be of great use to researchers. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, it is among the the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a dark blue-coloured ledger with leather trim on the spine and the corner covers. The leather is much worn. The insides of the cover have a blue and black mottled patterning. C.W.A. is the Country Women's Association of Victoria and was formed in 1928. It is a self funded philanthropic organisation. It is non-sectarian, non-party-political, non profit lobby group working predominantly in the interests of women and children in rural areas. This trophy was presented by the Country Women's Association (C.W.A) Kiewa Valley Branch circa 1950's and 1960s. This was in a period when the C.W.A. was the major women's organisation which had the greatest influence among rural women (especially in isolated areas). This was a period when broad based communications were mainly by radio,women orientated magazines and the telephone. The CWA was an organisation that catered exclusively to women's needs. The C.W.A. motto; "Honour our God, Loyalty to the throne, Service to the country, Through country women, For country women, By country women."The atmosphere was one of "sisterhood" and covered nearly all the needs of rural based women. This one organisation incorporated knowledge and learning targeting women who physically may be isolated but not mentally. This particular trophy was for the "most outstanding Item" in the years: 1956,1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965.The Kiewa Valley Group of the C.W.A. was a focal point for women in this still relatively isolated rural region a place of refuge from the heavy domestic demands that family and business exerted. It provided for women needs of a time and space to gain all the mental relaxation and group bonding necessary to balance the sometimes harsh environment that rural life presented. It provided companionship and "self worth" avenues through competitions in various activities. Unlike the rural males retreat to the local pub for male bonding women's retreat to the CWA provided a greater facility to interact with other women, of like minds, which for the majority of time benefited their families as well.This item has been manufactured in the form of a "flower" vase. It is made from bronze and is silver plated. It resembles the ancient Olympic torch, with a wide rim at the top and narrowing to the base. Contents include: Appendix I: Law, Discipline, Administration and Organisation, Hygiene and Sanitation, Notes on Meteorology, Definitions, The principles of flight, Airframes, Engine; Appendix II: Mathematics problems for revision.This notebook has significant research potential, as it bears the service number of the owner: Roy Eliason. Roy Eliason's service history is well documented in the National Archives of Australia and this book provides an insight into a period of his service. Notebooks such as this were presumably issued to new recruits in the early stages of their service. Though this copy is in fair condition with several signs of wear, these signs may in fact increase the significance of the item, demonstrating the frequent use of this item in the hands of a new recruit to the Royal Australian Air Force.
