Harry Hale 1861-1937, a silk spinner, builder, migrated from England c1890 and built his house using 2nd hand material from the old Mentone Baths, old Co-op Stores, and some windows from the old St Matthew's Church Cheltenham .Harry with wife Frances raised 9 children. Following an accident Harry lost his leg and dissatisfied with the artificial limb he found a 'peg- leg ' more comfortable. Harry built many houses in Cheltenham unhindered by his 'peg-leg' . These ledgers contain the purchase details by various people in the Warrnambool region of items obtained from Thomas Patrick Hyland, a produce merchant and insurance agent with a business in Fairy Street, Warrnambool. One ledger dates from 1955 to 1960 and the other ledger dates from 1970 to 1978.These two ledgers are of interest as a example of a Warrnambool produce store business in the second half of the 20th Century and as a source of information on the purchasers, people living in the Warrnambool area at that time..1 A ledger with brown corded fabric cover, a metal spine with leather trimming and gold strips. James Henry Pollard appears on the 1903 electoral roll as a painter in Canterbury Road (in one of the buildings that made up Hansen's Terrace.)The Union Road shops are covered by a City of Boroondara Heritage Overlay. This particular shop has changed very little with some alteration to the upper storey when it was repurposed for residential dwelling.Black and white photo of James Henry Pollard's shop at 139 Union Road, Surrey Hills in 1930. It is a 2 storey brick building with 2 glass display windows either side of the door and a corrugated iron roofed verandah supported on 3 posts. Above is a dwelling with 2 sash windows and an interior balcony within an arch. A wooden paling fence adjoins on the left. The side of the building and the front pediment carry advertising for the business. From this it appears that James Henry Pollard was an insurance agent for Guardian Assurance Company as well as being a house painter and decorator. This book contains the Constitutions of the Freemason Lodges in Victoria. Freemasonry is a world-wide benefit society. Moves were made in the 1860s to establish a Masonic Lodge in Warrnambool with the first Lodge being St. John’s (No. 895). The Masonic Hall in Kepler Street was built in 1870. This book belonged to a member of the Flaxman family and John Flaxman was a prominent Warrnambool resident in the 19th century – an insurance agent and moneylender in the 1860 and 70s and an employee of the auctioneer, Samuel Macgregor. The book, however, seems to belong to a W. Flaxman. John Flaxman had a brother William but, as far as can be ascertained, he did not live in Warrnambool. There is nothing known so far to link this book with Warrnaambool but it is kept because of the name ‘Flaxman’ and so it may have some relevance.This is hard cover book of 142 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering on the front cover. The cover is slightly marked. Thomas Couch Watts c. 1865 - 30/10/1914 was a Bendigo Real Estate Agent, initially in View St and later at 253 Mitchell Street. He married Alice Maud Glasier in 1888. His son Raymond Leigh Watts b. 1894 was admitted as a partner in the business in 1915 when he qualified as an Insurance Agent. Raymond died in 1929 aged 35. Thomas became an auctioneer and Real Estate Agent c. 1904 after initially running a book and stationery store in View Street with his brother Edward. These are three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’, a publication issued in 1910 by the Victorian Government containing information and photographs of places in Victoria. There are fifteen pages describing Warrnambool. One copy belonged to Bert and Henri Worland. It is presumed that Bert was the older brother of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Henri Worland was one of Warrnambool’s most important historians and was responsible for collecting much of the historical material that is now in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. He also wrote about Warrnambol’s history and was well-known in the 1940s for his 3YB radio broadcasts about Warrnambool’s history. His brother Albert was an insurance agent in Warrnambool. This book is of considerable importance as the material on Warrnambool and district covering the year 1910 is of great interest to historians today and is much used. There is a wealth of information on many Warrnambool businesses at that time. The connection with the Worland family is also of interest. These three copies of ‘Victoria Illustrated’ contain information on Victoria early in the 20th century and contain printed text, many black and white photographs and illustrations and advertisements for Victorian businesses. .1 A hard cover book with a dark blue cover and a pasted brown covering on the front and back cover. The front cover has white lettering and an image of a shield with a crown and the Southern Cross and the back cover has an illustrated advertisement for Buchanan’s Whisky. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue ink. .2 The cover is completely detached and the spine is missing. There are 14 pages missing at the end of the book. .3 The cover is missing with a photocopied front page. The photograph that appears in this frame is a copy. The original is catalogued at 01314. Sgt David Hamilton Pruden, 404, enlisted from Newry and was killed at Koster River in the Trasnvaal on 21 July 1900, and was buried at Rustenburg cemetery. He is commemorated in a large tablet in the Stratford Mechanics' Institute. This photograph originally hung in the Stratford Mechanics' Institute. A framed sepia copy photographic print of a head and shoulders portrait of a young man in dress uniform of the Victorian Mounted Rifles, labelled Pte D.Pruden and presumed to be David Hamilton Pruden, who died in Africa during the Boer War. The frame, of crossed wooden bars with decorative metal at each crossing, appears to be commercially produced. Backing support for the frame is a section of an 1893 calender for an unknown insurance firm, agent J.B Kelly at Stratford, which has been detached for separate cataloguing.boer war 1899-1902
