This cross or crucifix is part of the original furnishings of the St Nicholas Missions to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, Victoria. Mrs R J Ewart presented it to the church in 1942 to commemorate the lives of those lost at sea. On 29th May 1979, the cross was donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime and Village by the Missions to Seamen Victoria, along with many other items from the St. Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History): - The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. Its symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today, there are centres in over 200 ports worldwide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria, the organisation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres, such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943, a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village. Hence, the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981 and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. This brass cross is historically significant for its origin in the St. Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England, when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The cross is historically significant for its connection to the Ladies Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary, an organisation of women formed to support seafarers. The connection highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. Polished brass altar cross on a round base with top and side branch ends shaped like three-leafed clovers. The Centre of the cross is a circular shape. An inscription is engraved in script on the base. Mrs R.J. Ewart presented the cross to the church in 1942 to commemorate those lost at sea. The Ballarat Catholic Young Men's Society was established on 01 August 1892. This is the organisation's first minute book. Rev. Dr Delaney advocated for the formation of the Ballarat Catholic Young Men's Society. Curtin and Scullin became members of this organisation, and it is where they learnt to debate. William White was one of the founders of the Hibernian Society. 09 August 1893 - Richard Sutton provided a piano for recital by Mr Bailey. Brown hard covered minute book with red spine. It is the first book of the Ballarat Catholic Young Men's Society. The minutes are handwritten in ink. Coat worn by Sister Danson (VFX151507) during the British presence in Japan following the end of the Second World War. About 16,000 Australians served in the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces, including 130 from the Australian General Hospital with whom Sister Danson presumably served. Sister Danson was born in Numurkah and served as Leiutentant with the Heidelberg Military Hospital before embarking for Japan in 1947.This coat is part of a complete uniform set held by the Shepparton RSL. The uniform has representative and historic significance as an example of the style of uniform worn by nursing staff of the Australian General Hospital during the 1940s and into the 1950s. The uniform set has social significance to the Shepparton area, being owned and worn by a serving community member who was born in Numurkah, enlisted in Shepparton and returned to the community in later life.Shin length grey woollen double breasted coat fastened with three buttons on front centre. Interior bakelite or plastic button fastens panels on interior. Two hip-height pockets with folded flap on exterior. Grey fabric belt fastened with a metal buckle; belt is held in place with two fabric loops on either side of the waist. "AUSTRALIA" shoulder flashes on both left and right shoulders; on left arm a blue and brown rectangular colour patch and on the right arm, a blue square patch with embroidered crown and the words "BRITISH COMMONWEALTH FORCES." Epaulettes on either shoulder carry two metal badges signifying a senior Sister and fastened with a metal button. A pin is missing from the base of the epaulette. Interior lined with purple-grey lining; pocket on interior left chest and manufacturer's label at base of neck underneath loop.Shoulder flashes read "AUSTRALIA" and "BRITISH COMMONWEALTH FORCES". Nicholas John Caire was born on the Channel Island of Guernsey in February, 1837 to Scottish forebears. He migrated to Austrlia C.1860. His parents encouraged his childhood passion for photography. He ventured to Victoria in the 1860's, travelling Gippsland as an itinerant photographer. By the 1860's Caire was at Talbot. With the gold rush in the Bendigo region, Caire turned to the area, arriving about 1874 where he set up a studio in View Street. Caire produced his 'Album of Sandhurst', reprinted in this book. His early Sandhurst photographs were initially produced and sold one at a time, but ultimately put into an album."Views of Bendigo" by N. J. Caire (Nicholas John Caire). This uniform was worn by Sister Winifred Ride during World War 2.. Nurses played a key role in the conflict through their care and compassion to the servicemen who were wounded and sick.The nurses uniform is symbolic of the sacrifice and service of the many women who served their country in WW2. Grey fitted, lined jacket with long sleeves, collar and lapels. Three front metal buttons buttons and two smaller buttons on each sleeve. Dark green epaulette with four metal buttons on each shoulder (Right side is faded). Two hip pockets with one button fastener. One internal pocket with small grey button. This pair of altar lights is from the St. Nicholas Seamen’s Church, 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria, and was used during religious services there. The Church was operated by the Mission to Seamen organisation. The par of candlesticks was originally donated by Mrs. R.J. Ewart,as part of the furnishings for the new St Nicholas Seamen's Church in Williamstown, opened in 1944. The candlesticks were made by T. Gaunt & Co. of Melbourne, a manufacturer, importer and retailer of a wide variety of goods including jewellery, clocks and watches, navigational and measuring instruments, dinnerware, glassware and ornaments. Thomas Gaunt photograph was included in an album of security identity portraits of members of the Victorian Court, Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne, 1888 THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centr4es in over 200 ports world-wide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981 and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. These candlestickrs are significant historically for their origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The connection of the candlesticks to the Mission to Seamen highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support.Candlesticks or altar lights; a pair of two polished brass candlesticks. The wax cup at the top has a scalloped lip, the centre of the stem has a bulbous section, and the base has a cast floral design depicting leaves and grapes. The candlesticks have inscriptions. The Church was operated by the Mission to Seamen organisation. The symbol of the broad arrow on the base of the shell case signifies that it was owned by the Australian Army. The dates of the shell cases - 1940 and 1941 - link the shell cases with World War II. Both cases' headstamps have "N", which could indicate that they were made for use by the Navy. Shell Case 1298.01: The headstamp code on the label "MEC" means that it was made by the Explosives Factory Maribyrnong - Cordite Annexe, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, which made cordite propellant for cartridges and shells. Shell Case 1298.02: The headstamp "MF" indicates it was made by the Small Arms Manufacturing Factory in Footscray, Melbourne, and the stamped year was 1941. Louise Amy Breaks, also known as Lulu, died on the 8 May 1943. An error on the plaque mentions 1945 which was likeky erected later. In her obituary published on the Williamstown Chronicle, Friday 14 May 1943, page 1: A well-known and very highly respected resident of this city, Miss Louise Amy (Lulu) Breaks, of 4 Jackson Court, Ferguson St., died on Saturday morning, after a brief Illness. Deceased was born .ocally and was the eldest daughter of the late Engineer Commander James L. Breaks, R.N., and Alice Breaks. Deceased was a very prominent member and worker of Holy Trinity Church and actively identified with every caritable movement in this City. She leaves a sister, Miss Maude Breaks, to mourn her loss. The funeral took place on Monday afternioon, leaving Holy Trinity Church after a service conducted by the Rev. J. H. Raverty, assisted by the Revs. S. P. H. Martin and Oliver. The large congregation in the Church, lengthy cortege, and very large number of floral tributes received testified to the esteem in which deceased was held. Ernest W. Jackson. had charge of the funeral arrangements, and the Rev. J. H: Raverty officiated at the cemetery.Louise Breaks and her family were active members of the Mission. Her father James Lennox Breaks, aged 22 years, sailed from England on the Cerberus on her maiden voyage, and was associated with the ship for 34 years until he retired.
