Daly DD. .50) - Photo, colour, 1990. ...The Freedom of Entry to the City on the 26th of October 1990 was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The event began with a ceremonial parade at the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The RAAF Central Command Band provided the music at the parade. After formal inspections of the troops, the Army Survey Regiment saluted as it marched past the Reviewing Officer - Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass, military dignitaries and guests. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St, along Pall Mall and to Gaol Rd. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996. See items 9124.28P and 9126.24P for additional sets of photos taken at the event. The formal booklet covering the event is catalogued under item 9123.This set of 54 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment were taken at the Freedom of Entry parade, held at the City of Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval (QEO) on the 26th of October 1990. The colour photographs are on 35mm negative film and scanned at 2400 dpi. They are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. .1) - Photo, colour, 1990. The Mental Hospital can be seen in the background. Mark Straughair and John Duncan, established the Beechworth Foundry, Newtown in 1858 and went on to build an important industry, employing around sixteen men, after acquiring Alexander Roger's New Ford Street Foundry in the late 1860s. Making and repairing mostly mining and agricultural machinery for the Ovens District and a Beechworth brewery, the business continued to function after Straughair's death in 1882, up until the death of Duncan in 1896, when the business folded. This photograph is historically significant because it shows the development of the businesses in Beechworth from the early establishment of the town.Sepia rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper mounted on boardObverse: [Pin holes from circular tacks in all four corners] Reverse: 84.216-1/ Newtown/ 1997.2650/ 21/ BMM3056/new town, newtown, newtown beechworth, local business, 1858, 1850s beechworth, joseph e. bishop, coach builder, coach, mark straughair, m. straughair, straughair and duncan, john duncan, j. duncan, beechworth foundry, mackenzie family store, t. pratten, grocer, beechworth grocers, beechworth mental asylum, beechworth mental hospital, mayday hills mental asylum, mental hospital, alexander rogers, new ford street foundry, 1860s beechworth, 1860s, mining machinery, agricultural machinery, manufacturing, bridge road -

Bishop Stephen, chairman of the executive committee of the mission in Melbourne, presided over the conference, which was opened by Archbishop Head celebrating Holy Communion in the Chapel of St. Peter at the mission. Among the questions considered was the problem of foreign vessels, from which nothing is contributed toward the support of the missions. It was felt that there was great scope for work of an international character, and that every effort should be made by the chaplains to bring men from the ships of different countries together. The chaplains said that many thousands of men from foreign ships attended the mission institutes. Efforts will be made for more contact to be made with men on coastal ships, and commendation of men from one port to the next will ensure that the needs of men are cared for as well as possible. An ordained chaplain will be sent from London for a new mission at Geraldton (WA), and a new mission will also be opened at Port Kembla (N.SW.). The chaplains will endeavour to obtain police cooperation in keeping docks and wharves free from undesirable persons. It is hoped that an effort will be made to seek the co-operation of the port authorities in order to ensure the pos-sibility of ships being allowed to be alongside during week-ends and public holidays without having to face the full port charges. To avoid the heavy charges the ships now anchor in the bay during week-ends and public holidays. Melbourne was chosen as the central port for Australia for supplies for mis-sions to seamen, and it was decided that the conference should be held every three years, in Melbourne. The last was held 11 years ago." The photograph was published in the 1936 Annual ReportThis photograph is representative of the relationship between the Mission to Seafarers Victoria and the Anglican Church. Reverend Frank Oliver served as Chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria from 1930 - 1960. A gift of £20,000 for the rebuilding of the Port Melbourne institute, which was old and dilapidated, was announced at the conference. Black and white photograph mounted on cardboard with border detail on the front. The photograph is of eleven men, five standing behind six seated. Nine of the men are wearing clerical collars and two are in suit and ties. The photograph appears to have been taken in the courtyard of the Mission to Seafarers Victoria, at 717 Flinders St. Each of the people in the photograph appears to have hand inscribed their names/ signatures on the lower edge of the mountboard.Top edge of mountboard title of occasion and photo in Black ink all upper case: (see title details this record); Lwr edge first line corresponding to back row of group: 'REv Wm Hoog (Brisbane); Revd W.H.
