Railways collection -photo of a sketch of 'Jackson Creek Viaduct Opening (Courtesy ARHS Vic Division Inc.)'. The Jackson Creek Viaduct is a bridge about 24 miles from Melbourne and is 80 feet high being constructed of Footscray Bluestone piers and abutments and wrought iron girders. The girders were made in England and delivered to the colony by the time the the piers were ready to receive them. Eadie's Mill on Jacksons Creek was one of the earliest mills to be established in the area. The bluestone bridge which spans the Jacksons Creek was built in 1857 and replaced a laminated timber bridge. In the 1970s the bluestone bridge over Jackson's Creek ceased to be used and a wider bridge was constructed to its north. The buildings in the photograph are of the former pumping station, which was at the base of the Jackson Creek viaduct, north of Sunbury Railway Station. It was part of the infrastructure used to supply water to the steam trains on the Melbourne - Bendigo line. The water was pumped from the creek and taken by horse-drawn cart to the water tower at the station. With the introduction of piped town water supply for Sunbury in 1906, the need for the pumping station was no longer required. This is a photograph of The Nook in Sunbury, which is a popular passive recreation area in the Jackson Creek valley. Over the years it has been used for various activities. First Nations People used the creek as a food source while Europeans grew cereal crops and vines. The bridge constructed from bluestone, brick and iron over the Jacksons Creek at Sunbury is an important structure on the Melbourne-Echuca rail line. The foundation stone for the bridge was laid on 13 January 1859 and the bridge opened in July 1861.
