It was part of the infrastructure used to supply water to the steam trains on the Melbourne - Bendigo line. The water was pumped from the creek and taken by horse-drawn cart to the water tower at the station. With the introduction of piped town water supply for Sunbury in 1906, the need for the pumping station was no longer required.
