This is a copy of a photograph taken in 1902 to show the extent of the drought on the Darling River. It is taken near the town of Wilcannia and relates to P000012. 8 paddle steamers and 4 barges can be seen. One barge is being unloaded onto the bank. One of the paddle steamers is thought to be the P.S Wandering Jew which was built in Victoria in 1866 (Ref. The Register of Australian and N.Z Shipping' by C. Earnshaw. Page 136)This is a photograph showing the extent of the 1902 drought in the Murray Darling River basin. It also shows the type of cargo and the capacity or the barges. It also shows unloading techniques. Compare this to P000012 which shows the same scene, but with no boats present. A copy of a black and white photograph of boats stranded on the Central Darling River in the 1902 drought. Various paddle steamers and barges are piled along the left bank, including the 'P.S Wandering Jew'. Cargo is being transferred on the bank.The National Library of Australia stamp is on the back. Also written in pencil on the back of the photograph; "Originals copied by Nat. Library from photos donated by H. Coulson. Darling River." Faded Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article dated 5.2.1988 re: Star of David which was saved by Gordon Glover's father from a pile of rubbish from the wrecking of the old Bendigo Synagogue in 1927. The article says that Harry Fogel and Alan Buchanek were trying to research the history of how the Jews in the area maintained the Jewish lifestyle and came in contact with the Glover family. Gordon Glover knew more about the history of the Synagogue and the stories of Jews in Bendigo 'than any Jew we could find 'said Harry Fogel. The Cape of Good Hope Store was the first unofficial Synagogue run by a Mr Helbrun. To celebrate Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), Jews eat foods like honey cake and apple dipped in honey. Along with a special prayer, this is a way of asking God for a sweet and happy year ahead. Our contemporary Judaica collection was developed through a series of exhibitions titled Australian Contemporary Design in Jewish Ceremony I, II and III. For each of the three exhibitions, contemporary artists and crafts-makers were invited to design new objects that could be used to perform the Jewish ceremonies and rituals that had been preserved and developed by Australia’s Jewish community over the last 200 years. This collection now comprises over sixty unique and distinctive objects made using very different methods of production, including tapestry, silver-smithing, carpentry, ceramics and glass-work. The poem was written in 1942 by Jan Remco Theodoor Campert before he and seventeen other Dutch Resistance Fighters were condemed to death. Jan Campert was a Dutch journalist ,theatre critic and writer who lived in Amsterdam. During the German Occupation of the Netherlands in World War ii he was arrested for aiding the Jews. He was held in the Neuengamme concentration camp where he died in 1943.Wooden framed poem.On rear of object - Donated by W.J.L. Verhoef Sen. The collars were made by Maria Frisch who had survived a number of concentration camps during the war and emigrated with her daughter Anne to Australia in 1948. Maria and her daughter Anne were Polish Jews. As a small child Anne had been smuggled out of the Krakow ghetto in 1942 and was taken in by a Polish woman. At the end of the war Anne was reunited with her mother in Krakow. When they emigrated to Melbourne they lived in Martin Street, Brighton. Maria's husband, and Anne's father, perished in Mauthausen concentration camp. Maria Entenberg married Jack Frisch in Melbourne in 1952. Two artificial pearl collars in original cardboard box. One collar is constructed with two tiers of interlaced pearls and the other with three. The lid of the box is covered in a textured printed cream paper with a flower and sprig pattern in red, brown and green. This file contains three items concerning Sir John Monash. 1/A two-page letter distributed at a rare book week event on the 22/07/2014 to the Glen Eira Historical Society from Michael Headberry. The letter requests support for the John Monash Sculptural Commission by the Monash Pioneers, who are seeking to erect a bronze full figure portrait of Sir John Monash, Monash University’s namesake. Monash is connected to the city of Glen Eira, as Monash University has a campus in Caulfield and there are a number of streets named after him. The letter discusses the life of Monash and his many achievements. Details in another two pages are also given of the statue to be erected and there are two photos of a wax model of the proposed statue; plus a donation form. 2/An article by Dana McCauley dated 17/05/2015 entitled ‘Push to rename Ports’ about Caulfield lawyer and Liberal Kate Ashmor. The article discusses how she wants the electorate of Melbourne Ports to be named after Sir John Monash due to him being one of the most prominent Victorian Jews. There is a photo of Ashmor in fron of a statue of Monash. Newspaper not known. 3/An article from the Leader on the 30/06/2015 entitled ‘Exhibit’s unique view on Jews in WW1’. The author is unknown. The article discusses an exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Australia about the social history behind the Jewish support of the war effort.
