Jack Lockett was born in 1891 at Tarnagulla and left school at age of 12. He worked various jobs until World War 1 and volunteered. He served in various campaigns in Europe and later returned home and commenced farming in the Mallee near the small town of Linga. It was wheat but included sheep and cattle. Jack and his wife 'Doll' raised their family on the farm and then retired to Bendigo. Jack Lockett died at the age of 111 and was called by then Prime Minister, John Howard, as a 'priceless national treasure' when presented with the Knight of the Legion of Honour by the French Government. The area of Linga is situated on the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border. It is 11 kilometres west of Underbool. Jack Lockett was the son of Mary Elizabeth Lockett when she was still unmarried. The father of Jack was a man named Henry Bofill, and he was born at Waanyarra on 27th September 1865. It is of note that the Lockett family also lived at Waanyarra and were likely neighbours or knew the Bofill family. Henry later married a woman named Evelyn Mildred Grey and had several children. The family was living somewhere in Melbourne later on when Henry Bofill met with an accident and was killed. He was hit by a motorbike and sidecar in Lygon Street Carlton about 6pm after alighting from a tram. There were a number of witnesses to the accident, and the owner of the motorcycle was charged with manslaughter. Henry Bofill was transferred to St Vincent's Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The mother of Jack Lockett, Mary Elizabeth, was born at Waanyarra on 21st January 1870, the daughter of James and Mary Ann Bryant. Mary gave birth to Jack in 1891. Later she married Robert John Burstall and gave birth to several more children. Mary died on the 19th of October 1949 in Ouyen and was buried in the Ouyen Cemetery.Three colour and one black and white photographs depicting Jack Lockett's father's grave and mother's photograph. a Jack Lockett's son Kevin at the unmarked grave of Jack Lockett's father, Henry Bofill (27/09/1865 - 14/05/1927) at Fawkner Memorial Park. b Kevin Lockett and daughters Vicki Grainger (nee Lockett) and Jennifer Lockett at the unmarked grave of Henry Bofill. c Unmarked grave of Henry Bofill at Fawkner Memorial Park in Church of England section, grave 2996. d Jack Lockett's mother, Mary Elizabeth Burstall (nee Lockett), in 1949.a 'Kevin Lockett at the grave site of No. 2996, Fawkner Memorial Park, Melbourne, believed to be his grandfather, Henry Bofill B 27-9-1865, D 15-5-1927' b 'Vicki Grainger "Lockett", her sister Jennifer Lockett with their father, Kevin Lockett. In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age."[4] He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed.[5] MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Ballarat Branch. ... Mr R. B. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. It was decided to invite the author to meet a sub-committee on this subject![6]Handwritten letters from Richard Squire to his son Tom and Family reporting happening at the mine richard squire, tom squire, engine trouble, basil, f.l. smythe broker, trembath, w. ryall, mt mercer, flu, plant, skids, pump, c. hayes, illness, poppet, carburetor, mum, ned, shaft, balance weight, hazel squire, pearson, pulleys, syndicate, goon, len hopkins, suction, dunstown, lease, jim squire, bannockburn, nina, albert, mrs trenery, connie, jay, judy squire, cohuna, bladder attack, reports, estimates, dunstan & coy, jelbarts, barrett, flat fields, brown, gold estates, berry leads, parsley roots, share book, meredith, reef, pay sheet, colin, mr gibbs, l.r.g plan, banagwanth, mcnaughton bores, glenfine, allan, william thomas, john lynch, crawford, shelford, liz the car, trucks, chandlers, ballarat trustees, cameron, elaine, mrs read, clark, j. hayes, dunlop, dr lawrence, eye specialist, reid, mullock bank, jack squire, herman, peter's legal inc. ballarat, freddie reid, j.r. whipp, a.b. reid, grenville, leigh river plan, johnstone's, premier petrol coy, chandler's, ballarat deep leads extension, harwood & pincott, a. rice, lillas, l. e. walker, secretary for mines, pipeclay, sandstone, mr saville, weymouth & carroll, suction pipe, valves, financiers, gold mines of australia, mr hanley hunter, sadowa coy, kerang shareholder, buninyong, stanley hunter, len, fran, max, dr jones, honeycomb rock, booth, sandy mcnab, emily shaw, john cock, ross creek, mitchell, rowe, neil cameron, walker, kidney disease, holst, nellie, ronaldson's, ronaldson & tippett, brokers, investors, lockett, miller & co, wellesly, john sharpe, elizabeht ellen, old lawaluk, mining

John Henry Lockett OAM (22 January 1891 – 25 May 2002) was the oldest man ever in Australia when he died aged 111 years, 123 days. As one of the last surviving veterans of World War I, he was acclaimed as a national hero during the last decade of his life. Lockett was born in the small Victorian town of Waanyarra, near Bendigo. He left school aged nine to work on a local farm. Later, he worked for his uncles in the Mallee. On 24 March 1916, he travelled to Mildura to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force. He served in France with the 38th Battalion, earning promotion to sergeant and was discharged on 20 September 1919. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Lockett The 38th Battalion was formed on 1 March 1916 at a camp established on the Epsom Racecourse at Bendigo in Victoria. After training in both Australia and Britain, the 38th Battalion crossed to France in late November 1916 and moved into the trenches of the Western Front for the first time on 1 December. The 38th fought in its first major battle at Messines, in Belgium, between 7-9 June 1917. It fought in another two major attacks in this sector - the battle of Broodseinde on 4 October, and the battle of Passchendaele on 12 October. Belgium remained the focus of the 38th Battalion's activities for the next five months, until it was rushed south to France in late March 1918 to meet the German Army's Spring Offensive. The 38th participated in its last major action of the war between 29 September and 2 October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line along the St Quentin Canal. It was disbanded in April 1919. In 1923, he married Maybell Ingwerson and they had four children together.
