Jack Lockett was born at Waanyarra on 22 January 1891 to his single mother Mary Lockett. Waanyarra was a gold mining town west of Bendigo but was later abandoned as the gold mining decreased. Jack Lockett grew up on his grandfather's property and later his stepfather's before he left home to work at age thirteen. He survived World War 1 and then went farming with his uncles and later bought land at Linga. Doll Ingwersen was born at Scoresby on 5th July 1897. Her parents relocated to the Mallee in the town of Ouyen which is where Doll married Jack on the 18th of September 1923.Two photographs of the marriage of John Henry (Jack) Lockett and Maybell (Doll) Victoria Ingwersen in Ouyen, on the 18th of September 1923. John Henry Lockett OAM (22 January 1891 – 25 May 2002) was the oldest man ever in Australia when he died aged 111 years, 123 days. As one of the last surviving veterans of World War I, he was acclaimed as a national hero during the last decade of his life. Lockett was born in the small Victorian town of Waanyarra, near Bendigo. He left school aged nine to work on a local farm. Later, he worked for his uncles in the Mallee. On 24 March 1916, he travelled to Mildura to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force. Jack Lockett was born in 1891 at Tarnagulla and left school at age of 12. He worked various jobs until World War 1 and volunteered. He served in various campaigns in Europe and later returned home and commenced farming in the Mallee near the small town of Linga. It was wheat but included sheep and cattle. Jack and his wife 'Doll' raised their family on the farm and then retired to Bendigo. Jack Lockett died at the age of 111 and was called by then Prime Minister, John Howard, as a 'priceless national treasure' when presented with the Knight of the Legion of Honour by the French Government. The area of Linga is situated on the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border. It is 11 kilometres west of Underbool. Linga may be a derivative of the traditional name Lar-gni (camp of). In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age."[4] He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed.[5] MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. It fought in another two major attacks in this sector - the battle of Broodseinde on 4 October, and the battle of Passchendaele on 12 October. Belgium remained the focus of the 38th Battalion's activities for the next five months, until it was rushed south to France in late March 1918 to meet the German Army's Spring Offensive. The 38th participated in its last major action of the war between 29 September and 2 October 1918 as part of the Australian-American operation that breached the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line along the St Quentin Canal. Jack Lockett was born in 1891 at Tarnagulla and left chool at age of 12. He worked various jobs until World War 1 and volunteered. He served in various campaigns in Europe and later returned home and commenced farming in the Mallee near the small town of Linga. It was wheat but included sheep and cattle. Jack and his wife 'Doll' raised their family on the farm and then retired to Bendigo. The area of Linga is situated on the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border. It is 11 kilometres west of Underbool. Linga may be a derivative of the traditional name Lar-gni (camp of). Jack Lockett was born to his single mother Mary Elizabeth Lockett in 1891. He lived with his mother and grandparents at Waanyarra. Later on, Elizabeth married Robert Burstall. Jack went to work for a farmer at age thirteen and eventually went on to farm land in the Mallee with two of his uncles. After serving in World War 1 Jack Lockett married and raised four children on the family farm at Linga.Scan of an old photograph of Jack Lockett's mother and extended family. Jack Lockett became well known for being the oldest man in Australia and died at the age of 111. He was a World War 1 veteran who served in France and was wounded at least once. He became a farmer after the war and later retired to Bendigo. He was known for his long life and remarkably clear memories of World War 1.
