Three three page extracts from Andrew Ward’s 1994 Caulfield Conservation Study on commercial buildings in Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick. The three studies concern Moore’s Buildings 1891 shops at 305-313 Glen Huntly Road, shops at 323-329 Glen Huntly Road and E J Buckeridge’s Buildings 1911 shops at 357-371 Glen Huntly Road. The studies describe the buildings’ architectural features, provide a historical overview and statements of the buildings’ significance, especially in relation to the Land Boom and commercial development between 1890 to the 19020s. Orbost & District Historical SocietyPhotograph - Jarrahmond School & pupils c.1914
The Jarrahmond State School No. 2745 near Orbost was one of the earliest in this district. It opened in 1886 at the same time as Orbost and shared a teacher (Campbell McKay who was shortly afterwards replaced by John Rowe who stayed in this position until 1908). The building was financed and built by local farmers on the Stapley property. After a large and damaging flood in the nearby Snowy River in 1893 , the building was shifted to a new location. In 1926, a new building was constructed by the Vic Ed Dept. where it remained until the school was closed in 1948 and children from the Jarrahmond area were then bused to Orbost. Historical significance as one of the earliest photos of Jarrahmond School students.A b/w photo of a group of children and one adult in front of a tree. A faded blue document titled "Bendigo Teachers' College Graduation Ceremony 1959". Also on the front page is a list of the staff working at the college. On the inside page is the "Significance of the Ceremony" and "Order of Ceremony". The welcome to visitors was given by Mr. F. M. Courtis and the 'Graduation Book' was presented to Mr. A. L. Harris by Miss J. C. Burnett. Mr. C. L. Barker made the final call of the 1959 roll. Congratulations were offered by Cr. H. W. Snell J.P., Cr. P.V. Bowles the President of Strathfieldsaye Shire and Mr. E. P. Seymour, Head Teacher of Violet Street State School. The Occasional Address was presented by Mr. J. G. The first British designed and made Centurion tanks arrived in Australia in June 1952. The first tanks went to the 1st Armoured Regiment, but as more tanks became available armoured regiments of the Citizen Military Forces received replacements for their aging General Grant tanks. The Centurion was a great improvement on the Grant with a bigger gun and the ability to fire accurately while moving. Serving soldiers of regiments such as 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles were converted to the new tank and National Servicemen received full-time training while at Puckapunyal. In February 1968, C Squadron, 1st Armoured Regiment, equipped with Centurion tanks was sent to Vietnam. This tank No 169073 was one of the twenty tanks which served in Vietnam. There were many doubters about the likely usefulness of the Centurion in the jungle and paddy field environment of South Vietnam. How would this very large tank perform? No one needed to have worried. The tanks performed magnificently and were treasured by the infantry with whom they operated. ‘Tanks save lives’ was the catchcry. Several Reserve officers were attached to the Squadron in Vietnam including Colonel John Neale and Major Gordon Cole. Following the Australian withdrawal, the tanks were refurbished and issued to Army Reserve regiments for training. Our tank was allocated to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Together with the tanks came a crop of Regular Army Cadre staff and training reached a new peak. When the Centurion was superseded by the Leopard surplus vehicles were allocated to museums and regimental collections as trophy vehicles. History of Saint Margaret's Church Eltham beginnings to 1888. Throughout this foundation period the community grew in numbers and influence within the developing district of Eltham. The minister's and lay readers appointed to Saint Margaret's are indentified and their contribution discussed. The significant events of the establishment of a temporary chuch and then a permanent church, the opening and closing of a denominational school, the construction of a parsonage, libraries and Sunday school are all examined. The key to the success of this faith community during its foundation years was the initiative and resourcefulness of its laypersons. - back cover.
