Black and white hardcopy photos of these slides are at 01835, saying it was 1962 and gave the girls names. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Stanhope generally looked after girls over 14 either studying or working. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Photos from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The photos shows three rooms of Stanhope, the study room and two bedrooms. They may be copies printed from slides (see 02520-02522). The photo of the study room is surrounded by the names: Denise Attewell, Susan Knowles, June S., Jill Baker, Colleen, Jacky and Sandra. One bedroom photo is captioned 'Packing for the holidays' and has the names: Lynn Hall, Jacky Mooney? and Jane Reed. The other photo has the names: June S, Glenyce Ring and Jennifer Biggs. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Generally Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A newspaper clipping at 01823 mentions the routine of the house including that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equipped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member attended for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year they have informal dances at Stanhope. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The current school, Albion Primary School, No 4265 opened in 1926. It was built on a site once owned by John Fitzgerald (1850s). The land was later acquired by H. V. McKay who had transferred his Sunshine Harvester Works to the area in 1905 - 7. In 1920, the Albion railway station was moved nearer Ballarat Road at the request of Mr McKay. More people came to live in the area including soldier settlers.Albion Primary School's mission is to 'Aim High' in all we do so that our students grow to be socially capable, reach their full academic potential and become caring, respectful community minded people. Albion Primary School is located in a residential area in Albion, a small pocket of the local government area of Brimbank, approximately 10 kilometres west of Melbourne and was established in 1926. Our current enrolment is 199 students. We have a rich cultural diversity amongst our school community. The school is set around a courtyard with spacious playing areas including a grassed oval, running track, games courts, an adventure playground, sand pit, jumping pits, shady courtyard and garden areas, a vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard. As well as classroom groups, we have our learning teams, student house groups (siblings are allocated to the same house) and a Junior School Council. The school has four main buildings. All classrooms have air conditioning and interactive screens. Block A houses classrooms, staff areas and the administration offices. Our newest building has classrooms and some small group/office spaces. Block B includes our library, canteen and a multi-purpose room used for indoor physical education, Perceptual Motor Program, drama, visiting performers, and community activities. Block C houses classrooms and specialist rooms. We expect and receive the best from our students in terms of their learning and behaviour. The school’s dedicated and effective staff is strongly committed to helping students achieve personal, behavioural, social and academic success. In terms of learning, the highest priority is placed on the work in English and Mathematics. We also have a range of specialist and extra-curricular programs that we provide. Our specialist teacher-librarian is involved in reading extension programs that support development in literacy. All children are able to develop their artistic abilities through visual arts and music program. Our music program is supported by the Australian Children's Music Foundation. A specialist Physical Education teacher provides lessons for all children as well as the opportunity for students to participate in organised lunch time sporting competitions between the house groups. Auslan is the additional language all students learn at Albion. All children participate in a student wellbeing program that focuses on developing strong connections and a sense of belonging within the school. a. Book with a mottled blue-grey cover with brown leather spine and extends 5.5 cm to front and back. Corner edges also had the leather, two are missing and the other two are dilapidated. A red stuck on tape near the top of the spine had Ledger printed with some gold edging, most of which is worn off. Inside the front and back covers is a red, blue and white marble pattern. Front and back covers have been reinforced with white tape. 542 page Ledger Book for a general produce merchant. Probably Albert Bush. Alphabetical index at front. Entries in black ink on all pages and date from 1888 to 1920. Loose 4 page foolscap inside front cover listing Rolling Stock and Value. b. A pocket in the back of the book contains 6 pieces of paper relating to business and finance. Items include Discounts and Commission from 1888 to 1899, a note on insurance, a note dated June 2/90 headed Mr A Bush Sandhurst Dr to S A Bush & Co listing monthly amounts of money from Jan 1890 and 1889. Some amounts are with the name G P Reddie.Another one is a Building A/C dated 1889. Another is a balance sheet written on a page with another one written on the back and dated 1893. One written on paper headed Bush's Stores, Main Street, Bairnsdale and printed S.A.Bush & Co. It looks like a list of repayments listed in 8 bills. The other side of the page refers to Bill of Sales for Yeates & Baker and Bill of Sales held by the Bank of New South Wales. There is also a copy of two letters addressed to A Bush, one dated Oct 17.06 from H Hopkins referring to the late Mr Baker's property in Sale. This medicine glass was previously owned by Sybilla Margaret Kucks (1904-1978), daughter of Henry and Julia Kucks, and granddaughter of William and Sibilia Kucks. Sibilla was born in Warrnambool and lived there until 1917 when she moved to Armadale, Victoria, with her family. The medicine glass was among her effects left to her nephew William when she passed away and has been looked after by his wife Eva and treasured as a memento of their Warrnambool heritage. Mrs Sibilla Kucks sold sweets and fancy cakes in her Liebig Street shop from 1873 until the 1880s. She operated one of Warrnambool’s earliest dedicated confectionery shops at a time when sweets were more commonly found in a fruiterer’s shop. Her window display would have been full of brightly coloured sweets in shiny glass jars tempting passers-by. Sibilla (née Leyendecker) married Johann Wilhelm Kucks in New York, USA in 1856. Both were originally from Prussia. They sailed to Australia on the Ocean Rover and arrived in Melbourne June 10th, 1858. Seventeen days later their second child, William Jnr., was born. Warrnambool’s population was around 2,000 in 1859 when Sibilla and Johann (known as “William”) settled here. William was employed as a tailor by Cramond & Dickson. In 1859 the couple bought George Fergusson’s bakery in Timor Street and opened it as “W. Kucks Baker”. Along with fancy breads and biscuits, he advertised baked dinners to order. William supplied bread to the Warrnambool Hospital until the 1880s. In 1873 William built a row of four shops at 140-146 Liebig Street, one of which became Sibilla’s confectionery shop, and another was the new home to W. Kucks Baker. In 1877 William constructed a building in Liebig Street for the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company, which has since been incorporated into the Warrnambool Art Gallery. Its western wall shows to older construction and design. William and Sibilla had five other children. By 1896 their sons William Jnr. and Henry operated the business as “Messrs Kucks Bros., Bakers & Confectioners”. They employed six staff and used three carts for deliveries over a thirty-mile radius. They catered for clubs and functions including the Exhibitors’ Picnic Luncheon for the Warrnambool Industrial and Arts Exhibition (1896-7). In 1907 Messrs Kucks Bros. baked a monster Pyramid Cake for a local bazaar. It contained coins of various sizes and weighed 84lbs (38kg). Everyone buying a slice hoped to be lucky enough to end up with a coin! William Kucks Jnr. also became licensee of Terang’s ”Wheatsheaf Hotel”, its name and logo connecting it to the family’s bakery in Warrnambool. William (1825-1911) and Sibilla (1833-1910) Kucks and three of their seven children are buried at the Warrnambool Cemetery in a family grave. John Sambell migrated from England and established his chemist and dentist business in Warrnambool around 1890 in his premises in Fairy Street. The business later included his son Herbert. The maker, Whitall Tatum & Co, is clearly marked on the base of the bottle. The company was a a well known maker of prescription bottles. He used the brand "W. T. & Co. from Mid-1870's until the late 1880's, moulded into his glassware. This medicine glass is significant as one of very few remaining items from the history of John Sambell, chemist and dentist, Warrnambool. It is also significant as an example of medical equipment that has a design still used today. It is also significant for its association with William and Sibilla Kucks, a colonial family in Warrnambool that was greatly involved in the community and commerce of early days in Warrnambool.Medicine glass, (measuring glass or dose cup), clear glass, round. The antique chemist measuring glass is wide at the top and tapers to a narrow base. The glass has side seams and an uneven base. The glass has imperfections ans bubbles. The base is uneven. The measuring scale lines have been scored into the glass and the measurements and other inscriptions have been moulded into the glass. Glass is from J. Sambell, chemist and dentist in Warrnambool. On the back there is a measuring scale in tablespoons and teaspoons. There is also an inscription of the maker on the base. The glass was made in the late 1880's by Whitall Tatum & Co., America.Embossed within a round border "J. This item is from the ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. By 1886 the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute (WMI) had grown to have a Library, Museum and Fine Arts Gallery, with a collection of “… choice productions of art, and valuable specimens in almost every branch and many wonderful national curiosities are now to be seen there, including historic relics of the town and district.” It later included a School of Design. Although it was very well patronised, the lack of financial support led the WMI in 1911 to ask the City Council to take it over. In 1935 Ralph Pattison was appointed as City Librarian to establish and organise the Warrnambool Library as it was then called. When the WMI building was pulled down in 1963 a new civic building was erected on the site and the new Warrnambool Library, on behalf of the City Council, took over all the holdings of the WMI. At this time some of the items were separated and identified as the ‘Pattison Collection’, named after Ralph Pattison. Eventually the components of the WMI were distributed from the Warrnambool Library to various places, including the Art Gallery, Historical Society and Flagstaff Hill. Later some were even distributed to other regional branches of Corangamite Regional Library and passed to and fro. It is difficult now to trace just where all of the items have ended up. The books at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village generally display stamps and markings from Pattison as well as a variety of other institutions including the Mechanics’ Institute itself. RALPH ERIC PATTISON Ralph Eric Pattison was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1891. He married Maude Swan from Warrnambool in 1920 and they set up home in Warrnambool. In 1935 Pattison accepted a position as City Librarian for the Warrnambool City Council. His huge challenge was to make a functional library within two rooms of the Mechanics’ Institute. He tirelessly cleaned, cleared and sorted a disarrayed collection of old books, jars of preserved specimens and other items reserved for exhibition in the city’s museum. He developed and updated the library with a wide variety of books for all tastes, including reference books for students; a difficult task to fulfil during the years following the Depression. He converted all of the lower area of the building into a library, reference room and reading room for members and the public. The books were sorted and stored using a cataloguing and card index system that he had developed himself. He also prepared the upper floor of the building and established the Art Gallery and later the Museum, a place to exhibit the many old relics that had been stored for years for this purpose. One of the treasures he found was a beautiful ancient clock, which he repaired, restored and enjoyed using in his office during the years of his service there. Ralph Pattison was described as “a meticulous gentleman whose punctuality, floorless courtesy and distinctive neat dress were hallmarks of his character, and ‘his’ clock controlled his daily routine, and his opening and closing of the library’s large heavy doors to the minute.” Pattison took leave during 1942 to 1945 to serve in the Royal Australian Navy, Volunteer Reserve as Lieutenant. A few years later he converted one of the Museum’s rooms into a Children’s Library, stocking it with suitable books for the younger generation. This was an instant success. In the 1950’s he had the honour of being appointed to the Victorian Library Board and received more inspiration from the monthly conferences in Melbourne. He was sadly retired in 1959 after over 23 years of service, due to the fact that he had gone over the working age of council officers. However he continued to take a very keen interest in the continual development of the Library until his death in 1969. The Pattison Collection, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Collection is primarily significant in its totality, rather than for the individual objects it contains. Its contents are highly representative of the development of Mechanics' Institute libraries across Australia, particularly Victoria. A diversity of publications and themes has been amassed, and these provide clues to our understanding of the nature of and changes in the reading habits of Victorians from the 1850s to the middle of the 20th century. The collection also highlights the Warrnambool community’s commitment to the Mechanics’ Institute, reading, literacy and learning in the regions, and proves that access to knowledge was not impeded by distance. These items help to provide a more complete picture of our community’s ideals and aspirations. The Warrnambool Mechanics Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and the important role it played in the intellectual, cultural and social development of people throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870. The first enrolments took place in 1871 making this group of documents historically important.Paper documents relating to the advice being sought by the Sandhurst Mechanics' Institute from Ballarat School of Mines in relation to starting a School of Mines at Bendigo. .8) Correspondence to the Ballarat School of Mines from Joseph Phillips of the Sandhurst Mechanics' Institute and Free Library. The letter seeks advice on setting up a School of Mines in Bendigo.
