John Kennedy was born on 04 April 1862, the son of ship carpenter Robert Kennedy and his wife Florinda (Aitken), and the brother of Malcolm and Colin Kennedy. In 1860 the family migrated to Melbourne where Kennedy senior set up as a shipwright. In 1879 Malcolm and John, who trained as a naval architect, joined their father as Robert Kennedy & Sons, shipbuilders and shipsmiths. On 27 December 1883 at North Melbourne, Malcolm married Ann White with Presbyterian forms. Next year Robert Kennedy & Sons removed to Hobart where with John W. Syme and W. J. Duffy, partners until 1889, they took over the Derwent Ironworks & Engineering Co., a foundry formerly owned by the (Alexander) Clark family. The Kennedys also acquired the patent slipyard, formerly Ross's, at Battery Point. After the shipbuilding industry in Hobart began to flag John also turned to mining: he attended the Ballarat School of Mines, and reopened the Hobart smelters which had been an adjunct of the Derwent Ironworks in the 1870s. He made several voyages overseas on smelting business and as mining promoter, and was a member of the London Stock Exchange. In 1913-14 he was manager of Tongkah Compound (1910); Robert Kennedy & Sons was reputed to have contributed to the success of the Hobart-run Tongkah Harbour, Thailand, tin mines by developing a suitable dredge. The brothers also held shares in the Irrawaddy Burma Co. John was a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers and from 1932 an honorary life member of the American Institute of Mining & Metallurgical Engineers. John died in Hobart on 10 January 1937. (Ann G. From the late 1870s to the 1930s, illuminated addresses were a popular way to commemorate special occasions and were given to recognize outstanding service. They featured beautiful calligraphy and ornate designs. Arthur Grace was a draper who ran a business in Linton (at 'Criterion House') from the mid-1860s until he left Linton to return to England in 1873. He later returned to live in Ballarat, where he died in 1905. He was heavily involved with the Methodist/Wesleyan congregation at Linton, and instrumental in establishing the Linton Mechanics' Institute and Free Library. (Note: The 'Adress' does not refer to the Linton Mechanics' Institute, but to the 'Committee of the Public Library at Linton'.) The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat. (See 'Ballarat Star', 10 March 1873.)This may be the first reference to the 'Public Library' at Linton. Framed document, an 'illuminated address' which was presented to Arthur Grace when he moved back to England from Linton in 1873. The Address was presented in acknowledgement of the "important services rendered by you in promoting the material and social prosperity of a district wherein you have so long resided, but more particularly for you liberality and cordial co-operation in establishing a Public Library at Linton". "DEATH Of MR EDWARD GROSE. General and sincere regret will be felt at the announcement of the death of Mr Edward Grose, formerly one of the proprietors of The Ballarat Star. The sad event took place at the late gentleman's residence, Raglan street north, at 2 p.m. yesterday, in the presence of the members of the family, who were hastily summoned to his bedside on the previous night. Mr Grose had been in indifferent health for several years past, but he was always able to attend to business, and up till a fortnight ago, when he took to his bed, suffering from a severe affection of the kidneys and bronchitis, it was generally considered by those who knew him that he had many years of life before him. Notwithstanding, however, the unremitting attention of Dr Hardy and of Drs Woinsraki and Hudson, who were called in in consultation, be gradually became worse, until a few days ago his case was considered almost hopeless. Mr Grose was highly esteemed amongst a large circle of friends in Ballarat and district for his integrity of character and urbanity of manner, and the news of his death will come as a surprise to the many who knew him and were acquainted with his active and energetic temperament. In 1847 Mr Grose’s parents left Plymouth, England, for Australia, and on the voyage Mr Grose was born. His father, Mr. Thos. Bolitho Grose, who lived to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his wedding, and died only recently, landed at Adelaide, and was connected for some time with the famous Burra Burra copper mines in South Australia. In 1851, when the Victorian goldfields were discovered, he came to the colony and engaged in mining in Ballarat and Creswick, and at the Mount Alexander, now Castlemaine, field with varying success. Ultimately he brought his wife and two sons to Ballarat, and in 1857 returned to Creswick. In 1862 Mr Edward Grose was apprenticed to the late Mr John Francis to learn printing at the Creswick Advertiser office. The late Mr F. N. Martin then purchased the paper, and on the 1st January, 1871, Mr Grose was admitted into partnership. In July, 1884, Messrs Martin and Grose purchased The Ballarat Star, which they conjointly conducted until a few months ago, when the partnership was dissolved and Mr Martin retired from business. Shortly afterwards Mr Grose also retired, having re-sold his interest to the present proprietors. While resident at Creswick Mr Grose identified himself with all local matters, and was at different times president of the hospital committee, a vice-president and member of the council of the School of Mines, chairman of the local Cemetery Trust, and a prominent member of the Creswick Horticultural Society, while he took an active interest in all charitable institutions. In March, 1873, Mr Grose was married by the late Rev. Robert Kennedy to Miss Robina Orr, the third daughter of the late Mr Archibald Fulton Orr, formerly of Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, brother of the well-known and popular sportsman, Mr Robert Orr, of this city. Our Creswick correspondent writes:— Much regret was expressed here this evening concerning the lamentable death of Mr Edward Grose. The late Mr Grose had lived the best part of his life in Creswick, where he took an active part in almost every institution in the town, and was greatly respected by all. With the late Mr F. N. Martin, he brought the Advertiser to a high standard, and the fact of the two gentlemen who played such an important part in local history dying within two months of each other has been a subject of considerable and regretful comment. The relatives of the late gentlemen may derive some comfort from the knowledge that they have the entire sympathy of the people of Creswick in their very sad trouble.” The funeral of the deceased will take place on Sunday, leaving his late residence, Raglan street north, at 1 o’clock, for the place of interment, the Creswick Cemetery." {Ballarat Star, 02 July 1897}Photographic portrait of Edward Grose, member of the Old Colonists Association of Ballarat. More people came to live in the area including soldier settlers.Albion Primary School's mission is to 'Aim High' in all we do so that our students grow to be socially capable, reach their full academic potential and become caring, respectful community minded people. Albion Primary School is located in a residential area in Albion, a small pocket of the local government area of Brimbank, approximately 10 kilometres west of Melbourne and was established in 1926. Our current enrolment is 199 students. We have a rich cultural diversity amongst our school community. The school is set around a courtyard with spacious playing areas including a grassed oval, running track, games courts, an adventure playground, sand pit, jumping pits, shady courtyard and garden areas, a vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard. As well as classroom groups, we have our learning teams, student house groups (siblings are allocated to the same house) and a Junior School Council. The school has four main buildings. All classrooms have air conditioning and interactive screens. Block A houses classrooms, staff areas and the administration offices. Our newest building has classrooms and some small group/office spaces. Block B includes our library, canteen and a multi-purpose room used for indoor physical education, Perceptual Motor Program, drama, visiting performers, and community activities. Block C houses classrooms and specialist rooms. We expect and receive the best from our students in terms of their learning and behaviour. The school’s dedicated and effective staff is strongly committed to helping students achieve personal, behavioural, social and academic success. In terms of learning, the highest priority is placed on the work in English and Mathematics. We also have a range of specialist and extra-curricular programs that we provide. Our specialist teacher-librarian is involved in reading extension programs that support development in literacy. All children are able to develop their artistic abilities through visual arts and music program. Our music program is supported by the Australian Children's Music Foundation. A specialist Physical Education teacher provides lessons for all children as well as the opportunity for students to participate in organised lunch time sporting competitions between the house groups. Auslan is the additional language all students learn at Albion. All children participate in a student wellbeing program that focuses on developing strong connections and a sense of belonging within the school. Our school student leaders participate in programs that help develop their leadership skills. 5154.01 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 1 2T 5154.01 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 1 2T Names Back Row L2R Julie Ung Nathaniel Dizon Casey James Jesse Culhane Saamu Annie Lam Second Row L2R Jim Murphy Travis Montague Timothy ONeill Amy Caruana Smith Carl Schwencke Joshua Boudoloh Aaron McIntyre Front Row L2R Alfie Kennedy Danielle Williams Luc Owen Thuy Tran Elisa Mustafa Nicolle Reynolds Zoe Ward Narrell Raye Kieran Azzopardi Isaac McMillen Teachers Mrs Teresa Woods Mrs Angela Paschalidis Mrs Jann Turner Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.02 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 2 3D 5154.02 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 2 3D Names Back Row L2R Melissa Hall James Schwencke Michael Nardella Tyson Stone Tarick Halaseh Jake Raye Kasey Davis Second Row L2R Jessica Nedelkovska Jade Burling Krystal Bogoevski Owen Malolo Billy Burrows Jayde Stanley Zorana Popovic Tiffany Smith Front Row L2R Nicole Williams Joshua Folino Amanda Mustafa Skakira Lever Laura Demicoli Jessica Heeps Ethan Morgan Luke Cleland Meyer Imran Clancy Rashid Absent Allyssa Leggerini Cavan Chen Teachers Miss Sandy Dennis Mrs Lorraine Farrugia Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.03 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 3 4H 5154.03 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 3 4H Names Back Row L2R Daniel Kindred Callan Tishler Rachel Elliott David Kennedy Timothy McGrath Robert Reynolds Aidan Wileman Peter Mayne Second Row L2R Corine Markovic Rafael Protacio Cody Mayne Malgorzata Wasilewska Julie Rand Kelly Kennedy Dion Johnson Ladd John Merren Smart Front Row L2R Jennifer Williams Jennifer Truong Tony Tongpoon Ashley Skew Teagan Maguire Helen Ha Nicholas Davie Emily Folino Alisa Faingaanuku Tess The Dog Teacher Mrs Julie Hrovatin Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.04 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 5 6H 5154.04 - Albion State School 2001 Grade 5 6H Names Back Row L2R Mitchell Pollard Sara Kindred Megan Montague Gul Resuloglu Jennifer Pucek Chantelle Noack Katherine ONeill Adam Stanley Second Row L2R James Durham Blake Cain Matthew Archer Justin Wemyss Brad Scott Binh Nguyen Matthew Gauci Garratt Stone Front Row L2R Cong Le Catherine Protacio Adis Husejnovic Patrick Geoghegan Caitlin Tippetd William Raye Anh Vu Meg McKinnon Robert Anderson Teacher Mr Wayne Haren Mrs Lorraine Farrugia Mrs Sandra Spurr Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.06 - Albion State School 2001 Grade Prep 1B 5154.06 - Albion State School 2001 Grade Prep 1B Names Back Row L2R Brendan Stendt Nicholas Alexander Helena Guina Reece Mayne Jack Schofield Second Row L2R Melisa Husejnovic Meghan Douglas Christene Protacio Nathan Wineti Turde Ebony Wemyss Benjamin Britton Natalie coburn Annalise McMillan Front Row L2R Nhung Ha David Ung Kurtis Maguire Orlando Major Ashleigh Gauci Hayden Formossa Jayden Mamone Joshua Micallef Bethany Tippet Teacher Miss Elissa Barr Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.07 - Albion State School 2001 Grade Prep 1G 5154.07 - Albion State School 2001 Grade Prep 1G Names Back Row L2R Milos Zarkovic My Bui Kristian Djulic Matthew McGrath Anthony Buttigieg Nicholas Burrows Jamie Megens Second Row L2R Aaron Mayne Luisa Malolo Carmen Rosca Kalista Uzelac Bojana Kakuca Jarrod Doherty Nikolce Blazeski Mile Ajder Emma Gruescu Front Row L2R Ashley Rattray Stephanie Nedelkovska David Tran Malea Culhane Saamu Luke DAlfonso Jessica Tawaf Naomi Truong Chelsea Lever Jennifer Ung Teachers Miss Marnie Galea Mrs Betty Batty Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.08 - Albion State School 2001 House Captains 5154.09 - Albion State School 2001 JSC 5154.09 - Albion State School 2001 JSC Names Back Row L2R Reece Mayne Patrick Geoghegan Sara Kindred Rachel Elliott Samantha Williams Tim McGrath Thuy Vu Front Row L2R Nicole Williams Nikolce Blazeski Bojana Kakuca Zayne Duggan Ashleigh Gauci Amy Caruana Smith Minh Le Luke Cleland Meyer Isaac McMillen Teachers Miss Marnie Galea Miss Sandy Dennis Principal Mr Joe Vella 5154.10 - Albion State School 2001 Whole School 5154.11 - Albion State School 2001 Staff 5154.11 - Albion State School 2001 Staff Names Back Row L2R Lorraine Farrugia Sandy Dennis Julie Hrovatin John Milne Scott Garnsworthy Wayne Haren Angela Paschalidis Susan Carpenter Pat Porigneaux Front Row L2R Adrienne Erwood Jennifer Ryan Betty Batty Joe Vella Teresa Woods Elissa Barr Marnie Galea Absent Jann Turneralbion state school, albion primary school, adelaide street, albion

Ballarat Teachers' College was opened on may 4th, 1926, at S.S. 33, Dana Street, with an enrollment of sixty-one students, its original staff consisted of the Principal, Mr W. H. Ellwood, M.A., m.Ed. (Chairman of the Teachers' tribunal from its inception in 1946 until 1954), Miss A. Bouchier, B.A., and Mr A.B. Jones, B.A. (Lecturers). In 1927 Miss P.A. Hamano joined the staff. Teaching practice and special rural school work were carried on in schools in or near Ballarat - drawing, crafts and singing were taught by local teachers. In 1927 the college moved to the old Ballarat East Town Hall (remodelled for their use) in Barkly Street. During 1927 the numbers in the College were augmented by twenty-six Manual arts students who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Arts students continued till 1930, when, on grounds of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers' College.\During the four succeeding years approximately sixty students annually entered the primary course. Inclusive of Manual Arts students, and private fee-paying students, exactly 400 trainees passed through the college in its brief span of life (1926-1931) Fourteen years were to pass before they were again opened to students on February 2nd, 1946. The college was re-commenced at S.S. Dana Street under the guidance of Mr W.F. Lord, M.C., M.M., B.A., Dip.Ed., (Acting Principal 1946-1950), and a staff consisting of Miss E.B. Hughes, B.A., Dip. Ed., Mr C.B. Bryan, B.A., V.Com., Dip.Ed., Miss M.H. Miller, L.Mus.A., and Miss G. Kentish, Dip.Phys.Ed. The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister for education at that time, the Hon. F. Field, M.L.A., accompanied by the Hon. T.T. Hollway, M.L.A., and the then Director of Education, Mr J.A. Seitz. It was originally intended to cater for women students only (for whom 130 Victoria Street was purchased as a hostel) but, at the last moment, men were also accepted. A co-educational college was thus set up instead, and has continued as such. The original Staff has been considerable augmented, and the number of Students has been more than trebled. 1951 saw the introduction of the two-year course, successful students being presented with the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate at the final College assembly each year. In December, 1855, College held its first Graduation Ceremony, with its own Graduation hymn, the words of which were written by Miss C.M. Canty of the staff. Mr Ellwood, former Principal, delivered the occasional address and presented the Ellwood Prize to the outstading student of the year (Mr C.P. Handreck). Students who had successfully completed the course received their certificates from Mr E.B. Pederick, Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. College accomodation having been strained for several years, it was pleasant news when tenders were called in July, 1956, for the building of the first section of the new Ballarat Teachers' College in Gillies Street, near the Botanical Gardens. At the beginning of 1958 the new College was occupied, and staff and students have appreciated greatly the appointments and cacilities of the new buildign. In 1968 the three-year Diploma Course began, co-existent with the other courses which will continue during the transitional period. Successful students in the course receive the Diploma of Teaching (Primary).Black and white photograph of students and staff of the Ballarat Teachers' College.
