The Axis Kettle was developed through the EcoRedesign project funded by the Federal Government and based at RMIT in the 1980s and 1990s. The project involved the expertise of significant Victorian designers such as Paul Taylor, Gerry Mussett, Liam Fennessy and Michael Grima, as well as prominent sustainability experts such as academics John Gertsakis, Chris Ryan and Alan Pears. Axis changed the way kettles were used, guiding users to save resources through their behaviour. It is regarded globally by academics from prominent design institutions such as Loughborough and Delft as one of the first successful eco-design projects. The GE12 Electric Kettle was designed by Barry Hudson for General Electric and in 1978 won the Australian Design and the Prince Philip Prize awards for Australian Design. The kettle was innovative in many ways; it was an early example of an all plastic electric kettle with a single-handed opening-spout. According to design historian Ian Wong ‘The use of an integral hinge for the spout opening mechanism utilised the unique live hinge property of polypropylene, now common but at the time a novel use and very efficient to manufacture.’ The kettle was available in Carpentaria Orange, Blaze Yellow and Lime Green with a contrasting base. Barry Hudson (1935-2008) studied Mechanical Engineering at the Melbourne Technical College (MTC). In the 1970s he was Research and Development Manager at General Electric, and he also worked with the industrial design practice Rosenfeldt, Gherardin and Associates. He established Barry Hudson Industrial Design in the 1980s and began a teaching career at the former MTC, now known as RMIT University. The Kettle Drum Drenching Gun was invented and predominately used in the 1940s and 1950s. The Drench Gun was likely used to drench sheep with carbon tetrachloride for internal parasite control. These guns were widely used in Australia. There were problems with the design of the kettle Drum Drench Gun, however, which contributed to its demise. On hot days and/or if the sheep struggled while being drenched, some fluid would miss its intended target and go into the windpipe and onto the lungs of sheep, often with fatal results. At times nearly one-third of a flock could be found dead. Inexperienced operators, overdoses and weather were often blamed for the deaths when it was often the design of the Drench Gun itself. A steam kettle together with a steam tent was used to create a moist atmosphere. A steam tent was set up enclosing the whole bed by means of sheets/curtains and sometimes canvas, the kettle was heated over a gas or spirit stove, usually on the floor next to the bed, with the spout inserted inside the tent.Of significance to the AHNL as it is a tangible representation of nursing history. Steam inhalations were used to relieve patients with respiratory disorders and some drug therapy could be administered by this route. This very heavy type of iron kettle was hung on a hinged swing-arm, known as a “crane”, in the kitchen fireplace. This type of kettle, with a tap was known as a “fountain”, gave ready access to boiling water. This meant that water could be kept hot all day by the fire, and the water topped up as necessary. This aluminium kettle was manufactured between 1940 to 1960's and replaced the heavier caste iron "open fire" stove ones (in doors or in the bush). A cast iron flat base between the open fires and the kettle was required. This kettle was used extensively with indoor open fire places. It was part of the evolution in "tea" making kettles. These were the only method of making hot beverages before introduction of electric kettles. For the Kiewa Valley the connection to the major electricity grid was post 1950's.This kettle is significant demonstrating the type of kitchen utensils required before electrical home connections became a reality. The aluminium structure of the kettle was an advancement over the heavier caste iron kettles. This type of kettle is still in use for bush and mountain hikers/climbers due to the light weight. This kettle was made in the 1880s.Cast iron kettle 16 centimetres diameter at its base and 18 centimeters diameter at its widest point 11 centimeters above the base, it then curves up another three centimetres where there is a ten centimetre diameter hole. A non-matching metal lid with a one and a half centimetre knob covers the hole. Three centimetres from the base of the kettle there is a two and a half centimetre diameter spout which tappers to one and a half centimetres, it's 14 centimetres long and has two bends. A handle is attached to the top of the kettle, it is two centimetres wide, it extends two centimetres straight up at both ends that are 12 centimetres apart then forms an open oval 20 centimetres wide and nine centimetres high, it's one and a half centimetres thick for 11 centimetres at the top and has groves for fingers on the under edge.K23.1kettle, cast iron

This kettle was used by pioneer families, mainly rural, folk that needed a constant readily available source of boiling water, in or mainly outside the homestead.. This kettle was used in the early to late 1900's for the refreshment of stock men and farmers that had irregular "tea" breaks under sometimes hard and gruelling conditions.This kettle belonged and was used by a Kiewa Valley, pioneer family, the Roper Family. This kettle was moved from their Kiewa Valley property to their hut built on the Bogong High Plains. A scientific study started in 1947 to study the impact of grazing cattle on the natural Alpine and sub Alpine vegetation found grazing cattle had an adverse affect on the natural Alpine and sub alpine vegetation, and grazing on the plains was stopped by the Victorian Government in 2005.This "camp draft" could take up to six weeks.This large cast iron kettle holds a capacity of three pints of water/tea. Early settlers in Moorabbin Shire used large cast iron pots, pans and kettles, that were suspended over the open fire in the kitchen, for cooking meals. They had to be frugal and self-sufficient and so repaired the equipment to prolong its useful lifetime. Blacksmiths also made and repaired household equipment. James McEwan & Co 1852 - 1993 once dominated the the hardware retailing scene in Victoria. Established in 1852 to service the booming gold rush in Victoria the company went on to become one of the longest established retailers in Australia. Over it’s 140 year history the company went through many booms and busts. T. & C. Clark & Company Limited was based at Shakespeare Foundry in Wolverhampton England and was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark. The company grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton and were pioneering in the manufacture of enamelled cast iron cookware and sanitary wares. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T. & C. Clark were pioneers in the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteeing their products to be free of lead or arsenic.
