This type of electric kettle was popular in Australia 1930s-1970s but not in most other countries because of safety concerns re the combination of water and electricity. The kettles had a replaceable element so that users were able to extend the life of their kettle well beyond that of modern kettles. The steaming of the kettle in the kitchen was a prelude to a welcoming cup of tea. Many of these kettles came in quite eccentric and collectable shapes - this one is plain but graceful by comparison.

Physical description

Cream, ceramic, electric kettle. Original lid has been replaced by an ill-fitting black plastic lid. No electric cord. No discernible manufacturer's markings. c1950s
