K2,3 and4 are of the Kiewa River and two of the bridges spanning the river along the valley. K3 and K4 would have been taken in the 1880's and show the type of trees and plant growth along the river prior to land clearing for farming. K5 is of the Running Creek Cricket Team and therefore there was sufficient population in the area to form and maintain a team as well as have other teams in the relatively near vicinity to provide competition. Note the horse drawn cart which provided transport. Date taken is unknown but possibly c 1910. The Mt. Buffalo Chalet was built in 1910 by the Victorian Government. It was Australia's first ski resort and has served generations of skiiers, hikers and families over the years. It was built for 3195 pounds and has had stories and wings added since and is the largest timber building in Australia. B4 is the earliest photo in this group as the garden is in early stages of development - the other photos show the growth of the shrubs and would be taken about c 1920. Note the cars and motor bikes. It closed in 2006. The other photos are of general interest only but interesting to see that there were donkey's grazing. There is no information as to their purpose on Mt. Buffalo. Four different Kiewa Valley families are represented in the photographs. Their descendants still live in the Valley and carry on the traditions of beef and dairy farming. Of particular interest is the photo of Miss Marjorie Clemence, the first School Teacher of Upper Gundowring School. Gundowring pastoral run was taken up in 1838 and occupied by framers in the 1860's. The area was known as Gundowring and Upper Gundowring. The Gundowring School was opened in 1871 and most likely the Upper Gundowring school would be built at the same time. It was School No. 2733 and situated in Boyd Road. It closed in 1953 when the Kiewa Consolidated School opened. The newspaper page describes the activities in which the local community of Kergunyah were in engaged in that period - Red Cross, Fire Brigade, cattle round up and some of the identities involved. The article photocopied from the Yackandandah times states that he (Norman Coad) "was sent to the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth for treatment" which would mean that this was the closest hospital to the Kiewa Valley for emergencies in 1912.The Kiewa Valley photographs are of social significance showing two of the early bridges allowing the community easy access to both sides of the river and also the tree and plant growth before land clearing for farming. Buffalo Chalet have social, architectural and historical significance. the Chalet has been used by skiers, bush walkers and day trippers since its completion in 1910 and its closure in 2006. Cattle grazing on the Bogong High Plains during summer commenced in the 1840s and continued for many years. The Soil Conservation Authority recorded each family's area boundaries which were updated in June 1972 and continued to be adjusted until cattle were banned in 2005. The tradition of cattle grazing continues to be controversial.Holders of grazing rights for grazing on the Bogong High Plains were allocated specific areas recorded by the Soil Conservation Authority in 1972. Cattle were taken up to the Bogong High Plains by the Kiewa Valley farmers who had a lease there in their allocated area. The cattle roamed and were mustered in late summer. Initially in the 1880s, services (known as stations) were held at Creamer's home in Dederang - generally x3 per year.In 1883 a small church was built where the present church now stands.This weatherboard church, St Joseph's, was replaced by a brick one in 1914 and opened on 8th Nov. 1914. This type of butter mould was used by rural families in the Kiewa Valley to fashion/shape home/farm made butter either for domestic use or to sell locally.Kiewa Valley was a dairying district with many farms in remote locations especially before the State Electricity Commission of Victoria built the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the 1940's. This pair of butter pats have been crafted from wood. One has one side with grooves running from the handle to the tip of the rectangle. the other side is smooth. These grooves would stop the wet butter from clinging to the pat. The top side of the pat has been bevelled. The second pat is longer and wider without grooves along the handle. This bowl was mass produced and was typical of mixing bowls used in homes during the 1950's in the Kiewa Valley.Women in the Kiewa Valley cooked at home for their family and for school and church fetes. in 1922 Kergunyah Park homestead was built by David Wallace in the late 1800's and remained in the family until the sale in 1922 when it was bought by John Woodside (grandfather of Ewen Wallace) whose family retained it until 1938. Another family named Wallace bought the property in 1938 and this family's descendants are still running it in 2005.David and Henrietta Wallace purchased the original holding and built Kergunyah Park homestead in the late 1800's running cattle on the property. They arrived in Australia in 1867 with their 3 children and were early settlers in the district. Their descendants still live in the district. Their family demonstrates how properties were passed on to the next generation. Running Creek belonged to the Upper Kiewa Valley Cricket Association and were premiers in 1913 - 1914. They dressed in whites with long sleeved shirts and trousers. The umpire was dressed very formally. The names of the players are local families and included brothers or relations with the same surname.Historical: Running Creek were premiers of the Upper Kiewa Valley Cricket Association in 1913 - 1914. The Tawonga School opened in 1880 for the children of the surrounding farming families. Its enrolment increased when the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme peaked in the 1950's and it continues to educate the children of the local families (town and farm) now (2015). This book covers 100 years of the history of the Kiewa Valley. The Briggs family lived in Tawonga. Thomas assisted building the Tawonga to Bright road and drove cattle to the Bogong High Plains before marrying in 1887 and raising 7 children, 2 of whom, Ernest and Albert enlisted in WW1 in 1916. Their letters from the war give an insight into its effects and the attitude of the time.The Briggs Bros. lived in the Kiewa Valley at Tawonga. Horses were coupled together to form a team to pull farm machinery to work on farms. Later, petrol and kerosene equipment was used and then diesel. The Kiewa Valley consisted of farming families before the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was constructed in the late 1940's at the upper end of the valley. Dairy farms used cream separators to separate the milk and the cream before using it themselves or selling it to the dairy companies, shops or directly to the public.This cream separator was used by P & R Creamer on their dairy farm in the Kiewa Valley.3 parts - top brass lid with hollow cylinder enclosed across its top and extending beyond its circumference. 2. Sewing machines were used by some ladies to mend and make clothes for the family as shops were some distance away and bought clothes were much more expensive. The sewing machines were also used to sew items for fund raising e.g.. Church and School fetes.Used in the Kiewa Valley.The machine has a brown wood veneer base and a lid with a metal handle in the centre of the top. There is a long screw that fits in a hole at the top of the lid. The screw can be lifted out and used to open and take off the lid. Inside there is a black metal machine which is fitted onto the wooden base. There is a compartment in the base, right of the wheel of the machine, which holds an instruction manual and a tube of ""Singer" lubricant for electric machines". The light, above the needle is covered by bakelite. A leather belt runs around the wheel on the right to enable the machine to run. This milking equipment was used in the early days of milking using machines. The dairy industry is and has been one of the major industries of the Kiewa Valley. This equipment was used on local farmers, P & R. Creamer's dairy farm.Set of early mechanical milking cups. 4 cups - 2 each side of 2 hollow metal (steel) rods which are attached to hollow rubber tubes that lead towards the main milking machine. The metal cups have black ends at the opening where they are attached to the cow. This map has been in the Ryder family for approx. 70 years. Probably used when bush walking and skiing in the early days on the Bogong High Plains. The Ryder family are farmers in the Kiewa Valley and were involved in taking their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains where they had a lease. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme opening up the area during the 1940's and 1950's. This map has been owned by the Ryder Family of the Kiewa Valley for possibly over 100 years (1905?). It was used when the family mustered and maintained cattle on their grazing lease on the Bogong High Plains.
