This photograph shows the early days of motorised transport in the Orbost district. This truck is in front of a shop belonging to L Herbert & Co. and is most likely at either Norrinbee (est. 1905) or Cann River. Lancelot Herbert came to Orbost in 1886 in the early days of establishment of the township and went into business with shops which he called SNOWY RIVER STORES. He and his family developed various business in the district over the following century.This photograph is significant because it shows the style of early motorised transport in East Gippsland. With the development of tertiary education in the 1960s and 1970s the Ballarat School of Mines asked Coburn and Associates to design new buildings for the Ballarat School of Mines site, utilising the Ballarat Gaol site. This 'Dayton Scale' was used in a grocery shop in Moorabbin Shire in 20thC to measure grain, sugar, fruit, vegetables, lollies, etc as required by the shopkeeper for the purchase by customers. The Dayton Scale Company, originally known as the Computing Scale Company, built and marketed the first computing scale in 1891. It was part of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company formed in 1911, and became an IBM division in 1933. The Dayton Scale Division was eventually sold to the Hobart Manufacturing Company when IBM decided to stop marketing scales to retail stores. The Computing Scale Company of Dayton was operated from 1891-1914 by two businessmen from Dayton, Ohio who purchased patents on the recently invented computing scale. It was merged with other companies to become the forerunner company for IBM. On July 20 1897 Mr CC Hobart & Herbert L. Johnson formed the Hobart Electrical Manufacturing Company in Troy, Ohio USA. 1915 Hobart continues its growth into the World market, opening a sales office in Australia. In 1933 tenders were called for contractors to build a house in Campbelltown, opposite the Campbelltown Hotel (now known as the Black Duck). This was to be the residence of John Neil and Annie Elizabeth Maxwell, who were to live at the 1766 Creswick-Newstead Road, and where Neil Yager Maxwell was to be born in 1936. This copy of the specifications was retained by the Maxwell family, who also listed the timeline of the property (building commenced April 24th 1933, house completed June 21st 1933, moved into dwelling Tuesday June 27th 1933) according to A.E. Yager who also listed those who worked on the site. This photo shows people at the running of the Orbost Cup in 1890s. The Orbost Race Club was founded in 1890. Many early members were: George Morgan, James Cowell, J. Farquhar, J. Cameron, L. Herbert, S. J. Lynn, Arch. Rodwell, J. Ashby, A. W. McLeod, W. Middleton, W. Archer, J. Pleydell and J. Drew. The races were conducted on a course laid out in a paddock of Mr James Cowell at Jarrahmond. These five b/w photos of Orbost were taken in the early 20th Century. 2712.1 is of Ruskin Street looking east from Nicholson Street with the Post Office on the corner. The Orbost Shire Council chambers is also shown. 2712.2 is an excellent photograph of the Post Office on the corner of Nicholson and Ruskin Streets. 2712.3 is a photograph of the first butter factory, built 1893 in Lochiel Street. 2712.4 shows a visit by the Governor of Victoria c.1920s. 2712.5 is a photo looking looking down Nicholson Street from the Ruskin Street corner. It shows a line of shops which were amongst the earliest in Orbost. These photographs are significant because they are a record of early Orbost.
