Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Badge, Ladies Harbour Lights Guild - LHLG, 1920-1936
This badge is possibly the earliest example of the membership badge of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. The simple discreet design compared to later versions by Stoke suggest it was possibly made in the early post-war 1920s period when resources would have been limited.Earliest known example in the MTSV Collection of an LHLG badgeOval dark blue enamel badge with "LHLG" in large writing at the bottom and "LADIES HARBOUR LIGHTS GUILD" in smaller font running across the top. Badge, The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, 1917-1930
The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild originally inspired by the Central Mission in England was established in Melbourne in 1906. The first secretary Miss Ethel Godfrey is known to have addressed and helped establish LHLG groups in Brisbane and Sydney circa 1918 to 1920 (see clipping MTS scrapbook 1906-1935). This badge therefore represents a link with LHLG groups elsewhere in Australia. The LHLG groups were vital in raising funds and maintaining facilities around Australia for seafarers. This badge is an early Queensland variation on the usual circular badge of the LHLG.Enamel badge with back fastening: The Ladies' Flying Angel Guild in the form of a blue enamel "Q" with the flying angel flag (see also notes on reverse). At the front: The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. They were also dedicated volunteers who organised many social functions and events to offer visiting seafarers an opportunity to relax, have fun and socialise away from the ship. The organisation operated from 1906 to the early 1960s in Melbourne and developed an organisational model that was adopted by many branches across Australia and for other global missions.Small round white enamel and gilt lapel badge denoting the Harbour Lights Guild and its association with Mission to Seamen (Mission to Seafarers). Film - Documentary, DVD and MP4, Csilla Csongvay, Light Bearers: The Story of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild, 2003
After reading an interview of Elizabeth Fiddian in the Age in 2003 about her time volunteering at the mission, Matt Blackwood and Csilla Csonvay contacted Nigel Porteous to offer to film a documentary. The filming was self-funded: they had a volunteer crew of three, pulled some personal favours to source the equipment, Csilla edited the film at her workplace’s edit suite out of hours. Nick Farnell provided the voice overs for reading out the letters. It was recorded in a week end, on Betacam. They interviewed six or more members, who talked about their experiences, and they intercut their interviews with archival footage from the Mission. The interviews took place both at the Mission as well as in some of the interviewees' homes. The film was premiered at the Mission, and where it was played on a dedicated TV for visitors on a DVD. In 2023, Matt send a digital copy in mp4.The producers met some of the surviving ladies of the Harbour Lights Guild who gave up their Saturdays and Sundays to arrange events and outings for lonely sailors arriving in Melbourne.
