The City of St Kilda was created in 1890 and the phrase 'aura favente feror' is a motto that is believed to have been chosen by Benjamin Cowderoy, who was elected chairman, and later Mayor, of the newly established municipal district of St Kilda in 1857. He also created with the design of the crest. To the right a yacht bobs off St Kilda beach under full sail. This is the 'Lady of St Kilda', owned by Sir Thomas and Lydia Acland. In late 1841 or early 1842, Superintendent Charles La Trobe named St Kilda after this yacht during a champagne picnic near St Kilda beach. Near the shore a train and carriage can be seen traveling on the railway to St Kilda station. In 1857 this was the first public passenger rail line in Australia. Behind the train is Bachelors Hall on Alfred Square, one of St Kilda's first buildings. To the far left is St Kilda's oldest church, Christ Church (1857), which is still standing today on the corner of Acland and Jackson Streets. The lush greenery of St Kilda hill and slopes show why the original name of the district was 'Green Knoll'. The famous attractions of St Kilda as a maritime resort are symbolised in the foreground by Aphrodite, the Greek goddess. To the Romans she was Venus. Born from a cockle shell, Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty, sexual rapture and fertility. She was also the protector of sailors and seafarers. The royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom reflects British heritage. The French motto 'Dieu Et Mon Droit' (God and my right) and 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' (Evil to him who evil thinks) are associated with Britain and the Royal family since the reign of Henry V. Scotland is represented by a chained unicorn and the thistle underneath. Ireland is represented by the harp indicating music and poetry in the third quadrant of the shield. The crest was removed from the St Kilda Town Hall in 1994 when the City of St Kilda was amalgamated with Port Melbourne and South Melbourne to create the City of Port Phillip. In 2009, Deeksha Bhardwaj, a conservator and member of the St Kilda Historical Society, restored it. Over two months the crest was cleaned minutely by hand, damaged plaster was restored (except for the missing horn on the unicorn's head) and chipped areas repainted. The Mission and the Ladies Harbour Light Guild organised many social events for seamen especially during the Christmas period. This one is one o the many events organised at the St John's College (formerly Cumloden College between 1891-1905) on 195-201 Alma Road, St Kilda East, in what seems to be the gymnasium (as per the ring hanging from the ceiling on the right). The reverend seen at the back could be Canon John Stephen Hart, successor of Canon Reginald Stephen, who welcomed the groups at the school on this occasions.The photograph depicts a group of seamen seated at tables inside a room waiting for a dinner to be served. Only one lady dressed in white is amongst them. Gathering of seafarers and LHLG members carrying the Mission flag, at Graylings, property of Frederic Race Godfrey, in St Kilda, on 13 November 1905. Sixty-three men and boys were invited to the picnic. Miss Ethel Godfrey is standing on the right hand side next to another lady, wearing a dark dress and hat. In the article published in the Church and the Sailor in July 1930 after she resigned from her position of Honorary Secretary, this was the first picnic organised by her after Reverend Gurney Goldsmith pleaded for women's help during a sermon at All Saints church in St Kilda the same month. The Ladies Harbour Lights' Guild was formed on 1st October 1906 and she was nominated Honorary Secretary and Treasurer on 4 December 1906. See item 1642This was the official first picnic of the Amalgamated Victorian Seamen's Mission and the first picnic organised by Miss Ethel Godfrey. A year later she was nominated Honorary Secretary of the newly Ladies Harbour Light Guild. Speros Kostopoulos first arrived in Australia in 1900, returning to Greece to serve in the 1912-1913 Balkan wars and then returning to Australia. He was a foundation member of the IPS in 1916, the same year he married Ivy Peak. In partnership with his brother Othon Kostopulos he ran successful cafe businesses in the CBD and St Kilda. He later purchased a poultry farm in what is now the suburb of Chadstone. When the farm was eventually subdivided, Ithaca Court was named after Speros' birthplace and Ivydene Court (incorrectly listed as Ipydene) after his wife Ivy. Nicholson, to Gertrude Sarah, youngest daughter of the late James Swindells, Esq., of Manchester. No cards. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5779002 Barham House was built in 1850 by Edward Bernard Green (1809-1861) a successful land speculator. It was a magnificent residence built in the regency style to the design of architect John Gill and set in landscaped grounds of nine acres and included an ancient Swiss cottage. When Green died in 1861, his executor was his neighbour, William Nicholson (1816-65) who owned Fernleigh immediately to the north in Grey Street, but actually lived in Barham House during his time as Premier of Victoria 1859 - 1860 until his death in 1865. In 1866 Richard Twentyman purchased Fernleigh from the Nicholson Estate and a year later he married Nicholson's widow, Sarah. Both remained at Barham House until June 1870. In 1871 the building was substantially remodelled and re-named Eildon. Set of four documents regarding the issue of a Scholar's Concession Ticket to Barbara Talbot, a student at the Star of the Sea who turned 18 years of age during the currency of the ticket. It was marked not available after that date and had been returned to the Elwood office. The Memo from the "Auditor of Receipts" requested that an additional payment be collected from the student. Mr Gleeson, Tramway Inspected advised that ticket was not used after the lady's birthday and had been returned. One photograph shows a line of many decorated north-bound single truck tramcars with drivers at controls stopped behind a ceremonial ribbon as a woman reaches upward to cut it. Crowds of adults and children dressed in heavy coats and hats stand behind and in front of barriers. To the right in a lighter coloured overcoat is the chairman of the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT), Mr Alexander Cameron. The Malvern Town Hall is shown at left with its clock showing 2.30pm on Friday 30 May 1913, the day before the federal election in which the Labor government was defeated by the Liberal Party by one seat. Federal Parliament sat in Melbourne until 1927. This ceremony officially opened the new double track electric line along Glenferrie Road from the Town Hall at High Street, Malvern to Cotham Road, Kew. Negotiations between the three municipalities had taken much effort to reach an agreement. At Cotham Road, the track branched west to the Kew Post Office at High Street and east to Burke Road. Services were then provided from both these termini to St Kilda Beach via Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn Road and Balaclava Road. Two further ceremonies occurred at Gardeners Creek and Barkers Road, the boundaries between three municipalities. A second photograph shows the same convoy of tram cars stationary for an additional event at Burwood Road adjacent to the Hawthorn Town Hall (out of shot to the left). A large crowd is gathered as a photographer captures a Lady Mayoress at the driver's controls. A third photograph shows a larger crowd at the corner of Glenferrie Road and Cotham Road, Kew in front of and hanging from an electric tramcar stationary on double track. The 400 guests in fine attire included state government ministers, spouses, local municipal mayors and councillors. Also present were the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) Board, including Chairman Alexander Cameron, at right in a lighter coloured overcoat. The well dressed woman out front may be Councillor Mrs Wood, the Mayoress of Hawthorn.
