The sheets have ...These maps were produced in 1948 and they contain maps of allotments within the city of Warrnambool, including the Central Business District, up to 1948. The details given on each allotment show the allotment and section numbers, the measurement in acres, the name of the original purchaser of the lot and the date of the first sale. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society owns several copies of these maps but these ones are originals.These three maps are of great significance because they give the names of land purchasers in Warrnambool from the date of the first land sales in 1847. They are a most valuable research tool and can be scanned and photocopied etc.These are three sheets of cream paper pasted on to linen. The sheets have black and white printing and map work. These items have no known provenance and no information has been found on the Barnards on the printing blocks, delivery paper and stamps. The stamp for ‘W.I.O. Barnard’ was sent to an address in Camberwell so it is presumed that the Barnard family members were in Melbourne and not in the Warrnambool district.The only interest in these items is in the printing blocks and stamps. They are good examples of the type of printing used in the early 20th century and the type of stamp used by individuals for letterheads, visiting cards, personal items etc. There are 5 objects in this collection:- 1. A small red cardboard box 2. A printing block with a tapered wooden base and metal type – E.D. Barnard There are three small nails holding the type to the wooden block. 3. The Bogong Hotel, Tawonga, was 125 years old when it was destroyed by fire early December, 2011. Mr & Mrs Crotty started the hotel, then one of their daughters who married a Higginson continued running it for a number of years. The Hore family then took over - Dick and Essie, followed by Norman and Vera, then the other Hore brothers. The Bogong Hotel commenced in 1886 and was the meeting place for people living in the Upper Kiewa Valley until it was burnt down in December 2011. Its publicans included members from local families - the Crotty's, Higginson's and Hore's including Vera Hore who was born in 1909 and died in 2000. This bolster sham is one of several linen and clothing items that were made and belonged to Mrs. Eliza Towns and donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Eliza was born Eliza Gould in 1857 in South Melbourne (Emerald Hill) and in 1879 married Charles Towns. In the early 1880's they moved to Nhill in western Victoria and remained there for the rest of their married life. Charles was a jeweller and later became an accountant and for many years was involved with the Shire Council, the local show committee (A & P Society), the Hospital Committee and the Board of the local newspaper (the Nhill Free Press). They had three children and lived a life that would be regarded as comfortably "middle class". Eliza probably had a treadle sewing machine and would have made many of her own clothes and household linens - adding her own handmade embroidered or crocheted decorative trim. Most beds during the late 19th and early 20th century had a feather, hair or spring mattress covered by a blanket and topped with an under sheet, an upper sheet, several blankets and a bedspread. A flat bolster could be placed either under the pillows or on top of the pillows with a decorative sham. Washing pillows and quilts by hand would have been a very onerous task (involving heating water and handwashing in a tub or using a copper) and so it became the practise of many housewives to cover the pillows and bolsters with an outer slip (or sham) of washable material which could be easily removed and washed when needed. If the bolster was kept under the pillows it wouldn't need to be very decorative but many shams or slips that were "on show" were often highly decorated with embroidery, pintucks, ribbons or lace. This bolster sham is machine made and quite plain with the exception of some pintucking and eyelet lace on each end which suggests that it would mostly be hidden under the top pillows with just the decorative edges on display.This item is an example of the needlework skills of women in the early 20th century - combining machine stitching with hand embroidery to personalise and embellish a practical domestic object. It is also significant as an example of an early 20th century innovation that helped make the working lives of housewives a little bit easier.A long white cotton rectangular bolster sham, machine sewn, with seven ties and two buttons (plus one missing button) to enable it to be folded over lengthwise and closed. It's contents are including by not limited to poetry and short stories submitted to the paper from a variety of authors such as "Beside the Road" by Louis H. Clark, information regarding the events of the time such as Air Force Commemoration Week, writings such as piece regarding self-control while using alcohol. and sheet music for various songs, such as "God save the queen". A history of Port Melbourne is included on page 2. A history of Australia's cattle trade is included on pages 11-12. In addition, A biography of Sid Kidman, Australia's "cattle king" is included between pages 36-37. .2)This handbook is a collection of The School Paper for grades V and VI, by the Victorian Education Department for 1965. It's contents are including by not limited to poetry and short stories submitted to the paper from a variety of authors, such as "Pit-Pony" by S.A. Bainbridge, information regarding the events of the time such as the Fig Harvest at El-Flaye, and sheet music for various songs, such as "Old John Braddleum". The short story "The ANZACS at Gallipoli" includes a photograph of James Simpson Kirkpatrick with his donkey, bearing a wounded soldier (Page 33). A piece titled "A good-bye and a welcome" on pages 50-51 details the farewell to Alex McDonell, the director of Education for Victoria from 1960 to 1965, and the welcoming of Frederick H. Brooks as the new Director of Education in Victoria. A supplement is included in regards to "Scholarships and Allowances available for further education" for July 1965. A biography of Rudyard Kipling is on pages 103-105. A monthly series titled "The Seed from which they grew" detailed the history of some of Victoria's historical institutions: Victoria's Government House, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Victorian Railways, School Broadcasts, (Victorian) Public Libraries, The Forests Commission of Victoria, The Correspondence School, The Royal Mint, Her Majesty's Mail, Victoria Police, and Fire brigades. .3)This handbook is a collection of The School Paper for grades V and VI, by the Victorian Education Department for 1966. This Harmsworth Atlas and Gazetteer was inherited by one of the donors, a gift from her father who was Tasmanian.Large hard covered book with maps, charts and tables. The cover is green linen with green leather, gilt trimmed corners and decorative spine, It includes 500 maps and diagrams in colour, with commercial statistics and gazetteer index of 105,000 names. ... use, finer wool rugs for formal use, as well as linen sheets ...The blouse was made in Greece about 1945. The method used to create this fine embroidery was to copy a design from a cross stitch embroidery book guided by fine white tapestry threads tacked onto the yolk; when the design was finished, the embroiderer would pull out each fine white tapestry thread until only the embroidery remained around the yolk of the blouse.Throughout the centuries and up until the 1970s-80s, the women of Ithaca spun, wove, embroidered and knitted. Mothers prepared their daughters' 'glory boxes' trousseau (prikia), weaving bedspreads, rag mats (koureloudes) for everyday use, finer wool rugs for formal use, as well as linen sheets, pillowcases, blankets, towels and tablecloths. Linen was also woven to make the mattress that the young brides would take to their future homes. Mothers also wove and embroidered the fabric for their daughters' underwear and petticoats, nightgowns, etc. Sewing of the garments was also done by hand. The girls embroidered handicrafts using various stitches, they crocheted lace, netted pillows and even linen carpets. The handicrafts were usually embroidered by hand in cross-stitch using linen and cotton fabric. At the time there were merchants who travelled to the villages to sell machine made goods for the trousseaus, but most of the dowries consisted of the beautifully crafted work of the women. In the 30's the SINGER Company came to Ithaca and taught the girls sewing on the machine. A handwoven silk blouse. Colour - ecru. Hand embroidered, hand sewn, very fine white tapestry was tacked round the yolk; a gusset was sewn under each short puff sleeve at the armpit; two-tone hand made silk thread cords were passed through the hollow border of the sleeves and neckline. -

This document was given to all Air Crews in WW11 in case of a crash in Arab lands.A rare British High Command in the East "blood chit" or message issued for use by British aviators in the North African campaign for Arabic citizens coming across an English Officer of the English Government and a friend to all Arabs, advising all to treat him well and help him to return to the nearest English soldiers. A prayer completes the notice. There is a list of a few Useful Words in English and Arabic at the bottom of the sheet. The sheet is backed on linen.At the top of the notice there is Arabic script, and printed inside a circle in the centre of the page is the English Government symbol of a lion and a unicorn holding a shield with a crown on the top. There is Arabic script inside the circle too.
