The former Franklins and McEwans building is on the left. It then became Bunnings before they built a new store in Bridge Street and is presently a Dan Murphy and Aldi store and other smaller stores. The main entrance to Franco's was from Main Road. It was run by Sammy and another family member. Franco's was a 2 story restaurant. Pizza take away downstairs. Licensed, BYO upstairs. Downstairs originally had a female pianist/singer and the walls were a peachy pink colour with horse shoe shapes in the plaster, upstairs was a full function room with dance floor. It was renovated in the early 90s and a full bar added downstairs. They sold up and then opened a take away pizza shop on Bolton Street. The Penguin Drycleaners building was an extension built right over the entrance garden; the building to the left the former Volumes now Missing Gorilla. in 1887 six Ashford Litters were purchased by St John Ambulance Association after Lady Janet Clarke (of Rupertswood) and her friends raised enough money to allow these items to be ordered. These were Victoria's first official ambulances. The litter consisted of a two wheeled undercarriage with elliptical springs which supported a stretcher. It has four legs which support the carriage when stationary but fold up to form handles so that one person could push the machine while another pushed. Four Ashford Litter ambulances were located at the Russell Street, Little Bourke Street, King Street and West Melbourne police stations. Another was located at the Melbourne Town Hall on Swanston Street and from 1896 the sixth was located at the Eastern Hill Metropolitan Fire Brigade station. Premier Town Awards are awarded by the Victorian State Government to regional communities that best protect and enhance their environment. The award recognizes success in litter prevention, waste management and environmental projects and community group and individual efforts are taken into account in this regard, Warrnambool has won the award three times (1958, 1979-82 and 1988-1991). These items are of interest as examples of the souvenirs distributed to celebrate Warrnambool’s being awarded the title of Premier Town of Victoria in the 1970s and the late 1980s. Bruce Rogers, the recipient of the brass plaque and Director of the Premier Town Campaign in 1979-82 was a Warrnambool businessman, City Councillor (1965-9) and a Lawn bowls player of note. Three items- 1. Five Premier Town 1988-1991 paper stickers – circular with black printing and blue and green colouring in the Premier Town design 2. Premier Town 1979-82 shield-shaped cloth badge with black printing and blue and green stitching of Premier Town design (in plastic folder accompanied by paper backing with name of supplier) 3. This glass is a souvenir of the awarding to Warrnambool of the title of Victoria’s Premier Town for the period 1979 to 1982. The Premier Town Awards were given by the State Government to the town or city that best protected and enhanced its environment. Factors contributing to this included waste management, litter control and environmental improvements. Warrnambool won the award in 1958, 1979-82 and 1988-1991. This souvenir glass is kept as an example of the type of souvenir sold on the occasion of Warrnambool’s winning the Premier Town Award for 1979 to 1982. It will be useful for display. This is a drinking glass in the form of a goblet with a circular base, a thin stem and a top with gold edging around the rim.
