Margaret Hollands) Samuel Lynn was a well-known Orbost pioneer. He owned much property throughout the district , bred Clydesdale horses and fattened about 600 cattle. He was in great demand as a judge of both cattle and horses at agricultural shows in Victoria and interstate. He was a shire councillor for 30 years and president several times. He took a great interest in the sporting clubs of the town and played cricket until late in life. He was goal umpire for the local football team for many years, judged for the Orbost Racing Club and was the first president of the Orbost Bowls Club. He was also a member of the first municipal band. Sam Lynn was a well-known Orbost pioneer. Samuel James Lynn was born in 1865 in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. Sam left his home in Coleraine in 1883 at the age of 17. (More information in O.D.H.S. newsletter No. 91 September, 2012 by Margaret Hollands) Samuel Lynn was a well-known Orbost pioneer. Ho owned much property throughout the district , bred Clydesdale horses and fattened about 600 cattle. The shield encouraged sports participation between the local schools and was supported by the local business - the Mount Beauty Co-operative. sporting shields primary schools sports Large medallion in the centre: "Victor Ludorum / shield / presented by /co-operative store / Mount Beauty / April 20th 1956." ...School sports competitions were held annually with the winning school being acknowledged by being awarded 'the' shield. The shield was usually paid for through donations. It was donated back to be used again and the current winner's name added to the Shield.The names of the school teams indicate that the shield was competed for by the primary schools in the Kiewa Valley. The years are during the 1960s when many of the smaller schools still existed. These are 13 triangular-shaped pennants. They are multi-coloured and made of felt cloth. Some are yellow and green, some are dark blue and white, some are yellow and blue and some are yellow and white. They are all pennants awarded for the premier teams in local ...These pennants have all been awarded to the premier bowls team in the Warrnambool district. The Warrnambool District Bowls Association includes the bowls clubs of Dennington, Koroit, Terang, Port Fairy, Timboon, Warrnambool, Lawn Tennis and City Memorial. As the pennants have come from the now-defunct St. John’s Bowls Club of Warrnambool it is presumed that the St. John’s Club was the recipient of the pennants. St. John’s Club ceased to operate in 2013. It was associated with St. John’s Presbyterian Church and was situated in Princess Street. These pennants are of some interest as being mementoes of St. John’s Bowls Club, Warrnambool. This club was a prominent sporting club in Warrnambool for over 80 years. The young players are represented through the depiction of a game that is part of our national psyche and firmly entrenched in Australian culture.'Inner-city parks like Citizens Park have many diverse uses. They provide places to play, to exercise and to relax. They are spaces for community and are often subject to competing values and interests. The re-development of the Jack Dyer Pavilion at Citizens Park allows for the growth of the local community’s diverse interests and values and enables participation and interaction. The old school, closed for over two years, stands as a symbol of the town's past, with a 1909 bell and a time capsule to be opened in 2034.The schoolyard and classroom remain, though vandalized and unused. Toolleen is situated at a crossroads, making it feel peripheral—at the edge of federal and state electorates, the shire, and even police districts. Residents face inconveniences such as being in the wrong police district, requiring long-distance calls for assistance. Despite decline, Toolleen maintains a sense of contentment, with a pub, general store/post office, and a renowned football ground. The town's farming base and modest expectations contribute to its stability compared to other declining hamlets. Toolleen's layout stems from the 1893 Settlement Act, which aimed to help people become self-sufficient during Victoria's depression.The Plough Inn (the local pub) has been central since the 1860s, rebuilt in 1905, and historically linked to the Spiers family.Recent Revitalization Efforts. The pub, now run by Col and Suzanne Munro, has been restored, attracting both locals and travelers. The Mount Pleasant Football Club remains a key social hub, reinforcing community bonds.
