This small program was produced for a Massed Bands event held at Elsternwick Park on the 14th of September, 1952 involving brass bands from all over Metropolitan Melbourne and one band from Geelong. Held under the patronage of the Victorian Bands' League, this event involved bands marching from Elsternwick Station to the oval, and then performing a selection of items either on the march or in massed band format. The event was adjudicated by Mr George Harris with trophies awarded to various brass bands. The Massed Bands event was held to raise funds for the Caulfield Citizens' Band who had recently lost their band room due to fire.This little program is of significance as it highlights a typical brass band event in Metropolitan Melbourne. These programs are rare and it indicates the popularity of them and the range of bands that would travel long distances to participate. In a dual purpose, this event also raised money for the local band and was obviously a highlight for the municipality. The Geelong Harbour Trust Band was one of five brass bands existing in the Geelong area in the early 1900's. They were quite successful in competition under the direction of conductor Mr Harry Shugg. After their conductor, Harry Shugg left to conductor the Malvern Tramways Band in 1915, the band merged with the Geelong Municipal Band to become the Geelong City Band.This postcard is significant as it provides a historical window on this (former) brass band and their achievements. This programme dates from 1957 when the VBL formed a large brass band made up of the finest brass band musicians from across the state. This band was conducted by the great Harry Shugg of which was probably one of his last engagements before his passing. The musicians came from a number of brass bands including Malvern Municipal, Kingsville & Yarraville, Hawthorn, Preston, Ballarat, Thompson's Foundary, St John's Ambulance, Coburg, the Red Cross and Footscray, This propgramme is significant as it highlights the activities of the Victorian Bands' League when they presented major events. The list of names on the forth page of the program display a who's who of banding at the time.
