Russell Yeoman Marion Yeoman Margaret Taylor Eltham Kent England ...During a visit to England, Society members Russell Yeoman (Secretary and founding member) and his wife Marion reached out to the Eltham Society in Kent, England, just out of London seeking to establish a friendly relationship between two historical societies which share a common interest in their respective home towns of Eltham. They were invited to meet various members at the home of one of their members on 3 July 1996 where various items of relevance to Eltham, Victoria and Eltham, Kent were exchanged. In addition, the Yeomans were also invited to attend an Eltham Society meeting the following evening. Subsequent to the Yeoman's visit, Eltham Society members Margaret Taylor and Clifford Crate visited Eltham, Victoria during Christmas 1997 and were hosted by various EDHS members with further exchanges of items of interest. The relationship has been maintained over several years and was reinforced in May 2018 when Eltham Society member Margaret Taylor, proudly wearing her Eltham Copper Butterfly t-shirt, again acted as host to visiting EDHS members Peter and Liz Pidgeon. video recording, russell yeoman, marion yeoman, margaret taylor, eltham kent england, eltham society (london), presentation -

This time we have used our growing collection of material on Eltham, England. It includes the painting by Lionel Backhurst presented to us on behalf of Eltham Society by Clifford Crate. The booklet on the Eltham town sign that Clifford also brought is in loose leaf format so we have been able to include the whole of that which really presents an excellent summary of the important historic buildings of Eltham. Also on display is another painting by Lionel which was presented to Russell and Marion Yeoman. A small group of members attended the excursion on 4th October. We visited a number of earth houses listed by the Eltham Heritage Study in a very pleasant day's outing. The first visit was to the home of Jenny and Brian Ellis in York Street, formerly the home of Jenny's father Professor William McMahon Ball. We were made very welcome with inspection of the inside and outside showing the various stages of construction. We then walked through the grounds of "Kinloch", the Jelbart property in Arthur Street where we saw their large mud brick house and barn. Lunch was at Marion and Russell Yeoman's house in Peter Street. This pise house was built by the Moore family in the early 1950's. In the afternoon we visited the home of artist Jenni Mitchell in Fordhams Road, one of the last examples of the work of Alistair Knox. Then we travelled to Laughing Waters Road where we saw two interesting houses owned and built by well known landscape gardener Gordon Ford. Indenture made 6 August 1925 between Ernest James Andrew, News Agent, Cyril Robert Nicholls, Grocer, John Michael Ryan, Builder, Ellen Matilda Andrew, Married Woman, Alice Maude Bourke, Spinster, Mary Ellen Birchall, Married Woman, Adeline Gertrude Phillips, Married Woman, Minnie Maria Isherwood, Married Woman, Florence Garner, Spinster, Ethel Boake, Married Woman, Edith Marion Bowman, Married Woman, Clarice Armstrong, Spinster, Annie Ryan, Married Woman, William Pasco, Gentleman, Thomas Bowman, Printer, Arthur Copeland Christopherson, Grocer, Thomas Nunan Jewell, Carpenter all of Eltham (the Committee of The Eltham Hall) and William James Capewell, Butcher and Ernest James Andrew both of Eltham and Trustees for The Eltham Hall and George Birchall, Hatter of Eltham to be appointed a Trustee in lieu of George Harrison who requested to be discharged as a Trustee. Originally purchased in 1856 from Thomas Roberts, Yeoman of Little Eltham, for £10 for use by the Wesleyan Chapel, represented by indentured Trustees, Rev. Barnabas Shaw Walker, Minister of the Pentridge Circuit, Francis Thomas, Farmer of Keelbundora, William Harriman, Blacksmith of Nillumbik, Nicholas Rodda, Farmer of Nillumbik, Aaron Grimshaw, Farmer of Greensborough, Joseph Cooper, Gardener of Keelbundora, Peter Dredge, Scholmaster of Jika Jika and Samuel Jeffrey, Farmer of Jika Jika. Lot 20 of Subdivision of Portion 13, Section 4 of the Parish of Nillumbik in the County of Evelyn was located on the southern side of Henry street in Little Eltham North, where the current Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church is situated. It became the location of the Eltham Rechabite Hall. In 1893 a new hall was built and further enlarged in 1919. At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941.
