Sunshine High School existed in its own right from 1955 to 1991. During the early years the wearing of 'correct' uniforms was strictly enforced. Girls had to wear hats and boys had to wear caps as part of the uniform when outside the school grounds, or else they risked detention if caught without head wear by a Prefect. The boys therefore always had a rolled up cap in the back pocket to quickly slip on whenever there was danger of being nabbed by a Prefect. The girls had a winter uniform, which included thick beige stockings and a maroon blazer, and a summer frock in which they could be relatively cool during hot days. The boys had to wear their double breasted grey suits all year, with a jumper under the jacket in cold weather. The boys were supposedly being groomed as gentlemen, and so even during hot conditions were not allowed to remove their suit jackets in the class room. On about two very hot afternoons a year, the headmaster removed his jacket and so allowed the boys to do likewise. With single breasted suits becoming fashionable, it became difficult to find double breasted grey suits in the wide range of sizes required by students. In about late 1960 or early 1961 the uniform rules for boys were changed to enable them to wear single breasted grey suits. They still however were not allowed to remove their jackets in class on hot days. Over the years the rules for the wearing of uniforms were relaxed and in the late 1970's students were wearing either uniforms, or parts of uniforms, or their normal clothing. The wearing of uniforms at Sunshine High School eventually died out well before the School vacated the buildings on Ballarat Road, and amalgamated with other local secondary schools to form the Sunshine College.The three items of clothing, although not a complete uniform set, serve as a reminder of the summer and winter uniforms, as well as the colours, that were worn by the girls at Sunshine High School during the early years. The jumper is identical in appearance to that worn by the boys and so it is not difficult to imagine how a male Sunshine High School student would look like with a grey suit and that type of jumper.THREE ITEMS of girls uniform from the no longer existing SUNSHINE HIGH SCHOOL are individually displayed here. This type of head dress was very commonly worn by British Commonwealth Forces in the Sub Continent and other tropical areas. This particular example would have been a common sight in Northern Australia during the time frame, as well as Africa, Middle East and the Pacific. It is a light weight ventilated helmet offering good air circulation via the vent in the top of the crown, and shade to the back of the neck. As well as protection by the peaked front for the eyes reducing glare, preventing sun and heat stroke. It also created an image of gentlemanly dress and pride in appearance. It conformed to an ideal and was considered quite fashionable and a little dashing, often worn at a jaunty angle, creating a rakish air, far from today's simplistic view of pure functionality and at as low as possible cost. Whether worn with a tropical uniform with jacket and trousers, or open necked shirt and shorts, the wearer was easily identifiable as British or one of the Commonwealth countries.WW2 RAAF Wolsley cork helmet. The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1865 and bonnets were introduced in the 1880s for women officers. These bonnets were worn until the 1960s. The Salvation Army came to Warrnambool in 1887 and was initially based in Raglan Parade before opening a citadel in Lava Street in 1905. In the mid 1960s they purchased the old Congregational Church and Manse at the corner of Lava and Henna Streets.This bonnet is a fine example of the bonnets worn by Salvation Army Officers as part of their uniform. The bonnet is made of black raffia with a brim. It has black and maroon grosgrain ribbbons around the front, sides and back. The maroon ribbon has THE SALVATION ARMY machine printed in gold letters. A grosgrain black strap is attached to the head band to enable the bonnet to be worn securely. The bonnet is lined with black cotton. The Battle Dress is a 1953 model, style used for many years. The uniform was issued to William Gamaliel Bartlett, Regt No’s 35052 (VX25300) enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 11.6.1940 age 21 years, 2/9th Field Ambulance, taken POW Malaya, discharged from AIF on 12.11.1945 with the rank of Pte. He later enlisted in the CMF on 20.7.1959, unit OCTU 3 TRG GRP and was discharged in 1974 with the rank of WO 2 after 15 years 32 days. The Watsonia High School and Watsonia Technical School were merged to form Greensborough Secondary College for the beginning of the 1990 school year, with the high school campus serving as a senior school for years 11 and 12, and the larger technical school used as a junior campus. It was renamed Greensborough College when the former high school campus was closed in 1992. Champagnat College Wangaratta was opened in 1955 by the Marist Brothers. The sheaf of wheat on the badge represents the agricultural nature of the region. The southern cross represents Australia, the open book represents learning and the Jerusalem crosses represent the Catholic / Christian heritage of the college. The Marist 'M' represents the values and beliefs of the Marist Brothers, especially their devotion to Mary, the Mother of God. Maroon woolen boy's cap with gold and maroon braid trim on the peak. Cap is sewn in eight segments with cloth covered button at peak. Black cotton lining with circle of cream cotton in the centre where details of maker and owner are recorded. A yellow and maroon metal badge with gold detail is sewn to the front of the cap at four points. The words CHAMPAGNAT and DIEU ME VOIT are on the badge. Metal badge has Champagnat, the name of the college. Dieu Me Voit was the college motto. There is a sheaf of wheat, an open book, Marist Insignia 'M' and two Jerusalem crosses are also on the badge. Inside the makers were Philip Joseph and Son, Melbourne. It was made for Callenders Pty Ltd Wangaratta. Size is 6 5/8. Two owner's names: Original owner M.J. Monga or Mongu and Mongan has been written above this. Cap has information 'Improved fitting',' Pure wool,' 'Guaranteed Quality' and 'Genuine Flexite Peak.'
