Max Fletcher became Galen Catholic College's 1st lay principal in 1987, taking over from Sister Anne Boyd. Mr. Fletcher served as the school principal until the end of 2001. During his time as our principal, many building projects were undertaken and the number of students at Galen Catholic College continued to rise. The most significant development during Mr. Fletcher's tenure was Galen College becoming a one campus school in 1990. Mr Neal is the longest serving principal that Galen Catholic College has had. These 15 photographs of golf, sailing, rifle shooting and squash team and sports action were taken on Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment (ASR) and the School of Military Survey (SMS), at Bendigo on the 13th of May 1977. Sailing was most likely held at Lake Eppalock and rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range. The venues for golf and squash are unknown. The two RA Svy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, rifle shooting, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. This set of 31 photographs was taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo in November 1978. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. See item 6275.8P for more photographs taken on this occasion. Some writing on the rear identifies the subject. 2/A typewritten letter, (1 page) dated 1946 (no date more specific than that specified), from the Chairman & Honorary Treasurer of the Caulfield Central RSL Appeal Committee (name unspecified) to the Mayor of Caulfield (name also unspecified), imploring the latter for a donation of $20,000 dollars for purposes of constructing a Memorial Hall to eulogize servicemen killed during WWII. Of the two stories the second one is the only one with significance to nursing. 'Our 60 bound for Gallipoli' Sixty World War 1 veterans are on a historic pilgrimage to Gallipoli to take part in the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove. They are being flown at Government cost to Turkey, with each state and territory being represented. The group of sizty were chosen from 370 applicant.
