In 1932 the call was put out to the ABC to start a military band. The band’s task was to record music to play on air four times a week, and to perform live concerts for the public. By November 1933 a band was put together with 40 musicians from around Australia. The band was initially conducted by Captain H. E. Adkins, Director of the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, London. After the tour, Adkins returned to his position at Kneller Hall, and Stephen Yorke, a retired bandmaster of the Gloucestershire Regiment, was brought out to Australia to become the permanent director and conductor of the band, which he did until the band closed in 1951. During the band’s 17 year history they presented a sizable program of music. Their final concert received a standing ovation from its audience of 1500, with a teary-eyed Yorke. 23 Parts Concert Band Instrumentation Paso-Doble Militar Key Signature: C Minor Instrumentation: Flute & Piccolo in Eb Oboes 1st Clarinet in Bb 2nd Clarinet in Bb 3rd Clarinet in Bb Soprano Cornet in Eb 1st Cornet (handwritten) 1st Cornet in Bb (Conductor) 2nd Cornet in Bb 1st Trumpet in Eb 2nd Trumpet in Eb 1st & 2nd Horns in Eb 3rd & 4th Horns in Eb 1st Tenor Trombone 2nd Tenor Trombone 1st Trombone (handwritten) Bass Trombone 1st Baritone in Bb (Treble Clef) Euphonion in Bb (Treble Clef) Euphonion (Treble Clef, handwritten) Euphonion (Bass Cled) Contra Bass in Bb (Treble Clef) Basses Bombardon in Eb DrumsPrinted on reverse side of QM25 - Quick March "The Bullfighters". Absentee landlords were common in Ireland and for many landlords the primary focus was income rather than the conditions of their tenants. Many landlords realized that they could get a higher income by turning their properties to pasture than to continue with the old practice of collecting rents from tenant farmers. Evictions was the most common way of getting rid of unwanted tenants. The tenant frequently built his cottage himself from local materials. However, his rent was higher if he had windows, if his door was over a certain height and if he made any type of improvements or enlargements to the dwelling. The landlords practiced "Rack Renting" in order to get rid of unwanted tenants. Rents were raised to the point that the tenant could not afford to pay them. The landlord then had the tenant evicted for non payment of rent. There were no appeals and no mercy shown. Although the only legal reason for eviction was non payment of the rent there were numerous examples of landlords who evicted tenants if they did not conform to the landlord's wishes.[http://www.maggieblanck.com/Mayopages/Eviction.html, accessed 13/12/2013] This image was also printed in he Illustrated London News, April 17, 1886, with the title 'all that is left, scene at a Mayo Eviction. The old bluestone building in the grounds of the Dana Street Primary School became their temporary for eight years. In its early years the school offered only a two-year course. The first year was of a general nature giving a thorough grounding in Mathematics and Instrumental Drawing, and introducing students to the various branches of trade work. The second-year students studied for the Junior Technical Certificate and specialized in a course of their choice - either a trade (Woodwork or Fitting and Turning) or a course leading to higher studies at the School of Mines.
