Medal set and ribbon bars belonging to Pte "Robert Raymond O'Donahoo" (No. 1399). Born Epsom. Enlisted in Bendigo on 19/10/1914 in 2nd Reinforcements of 14th Battalion, aged 22. Embarked for Egypt 2/2/1915 and for Gallipoli on 12/4/1915. He was WIA 29/8/1915 with GSW to left leg and transferred to England where his left leg was amputated. RTA 19/6/1916 and discharged 25/12/1916. Note: Part of O'Donahoo's record on National Archives lists his service number as 1496. His medals are marked with the number 1399. One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 1. Replicas include the 1914 Star, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Mercantile Marine War Medal, 80th Anniversary of Armistice Remembrance Medal. The medal was distributed to Australian school children to coincide with the 10 June 1945 celebrations for the end of the war in Europe. The medalets were actually handed out on 6 June. Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day or VE Day) was on May 8, 1945, the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany.
