Five of the nine photographs show W5 class 743 (with destination 'City-Spencer St route 9A') with a demolished drivers cabin, severely burnt and derailed just south of the St Georges Road/Normanby Avenue intersection on a sunny dry day. They also show other vehicle, an overturned truck. Tramway workers, bystanders and fire brigade can be seen along with foam and smoke. Two further photographs show damaged 743 on an outside road at Preston Workshops. And two further photographs show the collision intersection days or weeks later from Normanby Avenue looking west. The collision appears to have occurred as south-bound 743 crossed Normanby Avenue and the truck cabin hit the driver's cabin and front left saloon wall. Perhaps the truck driver was travelling west on Normanby Road or turning west from St Georges Road and did not expect a south-bound tram on the west side of the centre reservation. Records show that the drop-centre section of 743 had its centre doors removed later in the 1970s and in 1985 was converted to an SW5.Yields information about the impact on W class trams of a major traffic collision and fire. Arthur Henry Miers, pictured in the photograph played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). Both photographs were taken at the same location in Collins Street just west of Swanston Street in the middle of a warm, sunny day. Both depict several motor vehicles queuing on the tram tracks inside a the safety zone while several passengers await a tram which is stuck behind these vehicles. A second queue of vehicles is between the safety zone and the kerb. The approaching W2 class trams both shows destinations Kew Depot route 47. In both photographs, decorations hang from a span wire close to the trams. One photograph shows two safety zone conductors in conversation amid several passengers, one dressed in a dust coat. One possible explanation is that traffic has been halted by the closure of Swanston Street, perhaps the annual Moomba procession in March, and will soon be cleared.
