During the golden jubilee of Legacy the delegates at the Annual Conference decided to send a message of loyalty to Queen Elizabeth II. This was signed by Geoff Handbury who was president of Melbourne Legacy and also conference chairman. H38 is a numbering system that was once used to sort items for the archive. This is a standard British Army Pigeon Service Message Book which was issued to Australian Army units during World War One. This Pigeon Service Message Book has no known local provenance but it is a very interesting memento of World War One.This is a British Army Pigeon Service Message Book which consists of a number of sheets of paper stapled into a cardboard cover protected with black leatherette. The writing on the front cover is stencilled in white. The ends of the cover are held together by a black elastic strap. The strap has now lost its elasticity. Inside the front cover is a printed sheet indicating the use of the book and the care of the pigeons. There are two leatherette tubes attached to the back cover which would have held writing implements. The book material consists of a top sheet printed with space for the message details, and sheets of carbon paper for two copies of the message. There is a piece of cardboard backing the carbon paper. None of the message pages has been used. The staples have rusted and the sides of the paper material are stained. This souvenir card "to the ANZACS Christmas 1915" was produced with greeting messages from General Sir Ian Hamilton, General Sir William Birdwood and Senator Pearce. The card was being sent by Australian Women in England to all Invalided Australians in England, Egypt and Malta. It would appear that Lady Birdwood was one of many behind the production of the Card. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. David FRAZER (1966- ) Born Foster, Victoria, Australia David Frazer works in painting, wood engraving, etching, lithography and bronze. He studied a B.A. Fine Arts (Painting) at Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Diploma of Education (Secondary- Art/Craft) at Latrobe University in 1991. He completed an Honours Degree in Fine Art (Printmaking (at Monash University in 1996, and between 1998 and 2000 Frazer undertook a Master of Arts (Visual Arts) by research: “Pastoral Melancholia”, at Monash University. One of Austalia's foremost printmakers David Frazer's highly detailed woodblock and linocut prints often explore the emotional and fragile state of the human condition. His work offers a nostalgic image of Australia through its examinations of landscape, Australian buildings, sheds, and itinerant travellers. He has held seven solo exhibitions between 1996-2006 in Melbourne, Sydney and a survey show curated by the Horsham Gallery, which toured Victorian regional galleries from 2004-2005. David Frazer’s work was seen in 37 group exhibitions between 1996-2006 including the 5th British International Miniature Print Exhibition in the UK, in the 2003. He more recently held a solo exhibition with Rebecca Hossack in London 2011. A recording made by H.R.H. Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh for Legacy Week in 1973 so that could be broadcast on TV. 1973 was the 50th Anniversary of Legacy. The text of the Prince's television message is: 'This is the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of Legacy which grew from some 14 members in Melbourne to more than 6,000 throughout Australia and now looks after 85,000 widows and 34,000 children of deceased ex-servicemen. This is a remarkable achievement and I think that Legacy is well known all over Australia for the very valuable work which it does for the widows of ex-servicemen and their children. I think that people have gone off to war and they have sacrificed themselves for things they believe in but they are always anxious, most anxious, about the people that they leave behind - their wives and their children. It's possible, of course, to set cup Government organisation to look after them, and to provide for them, but it needs something more than that. It needs the relationship which has gone because the father is no longer there and this is really the purpose of Legacy - to provide that essential personal element in looking after the widows of the men who went off to war and their children.
