Maidstone was originally part of the former Shire of Braybrook and later the City of Sunshine. However, in 1994, Victoria underwent council amalgamations, which resulted in Braybrook being incorporated into the City of Maribyrnong. The suburb of Maidstone continues to attract considerable attention from the residents of City of Brimbank, particularly its historical features, the old buildings and distinctive streetscapes that characterise the area.To capture the essence of Maidstone in 2021, a series of photographs were taken. A Nissen hut is a prefabricated, semi‑cylindrical structure made from corrugated steel sheeting over a lightweight steel-and-timber frame. It was invented in 1916 by Major Peter Norman Nissen of the British Army during WWI. The Maribyrnong Migrant Hoste, located around Williamson Road and Hampstead Road, used large numbers of ex‑WWII Nissen/Quonset huts as its earliest accommodation. These huts defined the look and feel of the hostel in the 1950s and early 1960s. The Phillip Migrant Hostel was one of the three major post‑war migrant accommodation centers on the former Explosives Factory land at Maribyrnong/Maidstone. It formed the western section of the broader hostel complex and opened in 1971. The striking feature of the hostel was circular arrangement of the buildings.
