These badges or insignia are probably British and belong to artillery and infantry military units but no further information has been found regarding them. It appears that items .1 , .4 and .5 are insignia worn by members of the Royal Australian Air Force. It also appears that items .2 and .3 were gifts by members of the force for a friend or loved one. The origin of the two star shaped items is unknown. The Royal Australian Air Force was formed in 1921, being evolved from the Australian Flying Corps., the aviation section of the Australian Army in World War One. These items are examples of military insignia pertaining to the Royal Australian Air Force and are retained for display purposes..1 Propeller khaki cloth badge with red and black embroidered symbol of a propeller .2 An oval badge featuring a gold and red eagle with wings outstretched and a gold and red crown above embedded in a black transparent material. This box of sampled is typical of those issued to official manufacturers of military badges, insignia, and buttons to ensure the gold colour remained consistent. These badges were held by the Third Army Quality Assurance Unit (3AQAU). The manufacturers were often local companies, where an example of a typical supplier is KG Luke who also manufactured the Brownlow Medal, the award given annnually to the Australlian Football League's best and fairest player.A rectangular wooden box with a black velvet-like cushion in one side. cushion has 10 examples - 2 of each kind - of military insignia and buttons of two different shades of gold colour. Box opens on one long side and is hinged (4cm brass hinges with 3 screws in each side). Clasps on opposite long side, also of brass. Wood has been stained a dark brown. Base off box shows 14 brass staples. Corners of base show 2 nails, possibly brass. A typed sheet of paper is attached to the inside of lid, dating from 1993, explaining usage of samples. Paper tag affixed to cushion between samples - Department of Defence authenticating samples in box. Tag attached with fabric tape and secured using a lead seal.Paper taped to inside lid - title 'SEALED SAMPLE 8455-03311' - a lengthy description of contents and box follows. Framed collection consisting of a large number of World War 1 era military badges and insignia from Australia, New Zealand, Britain and other countries. The collection features a set of three medals as the centrepiece which were awarded to an Australian serviceman, Acting Warrant Officer Alwin Stevens Nicholas, service number 4752 of the 3rd Australian General Hospital, Australian Medical Corp, A.I.F. The metal badges and insignia are mounted on a black felt cloth background over a wooden backing and housed in a wooden frame. Of the seventeen items on this board, most appear to be from British military units – Rifle Regiments, Despatch, etc. They appear to be shoulder and arm patches or badges. One appears to be of German origin and two come from Italy. This item is of great interest, firstly because it is a good example of the crude, but effective way, items were organized for display at the Warrnambool Historical Society in the 1960s and 70s. Secondly, the display contains an interesting variety of military insignia, many requiring further study.This is a piece of cardboard covered with black cloth which has been stitched to the board with black cotton. Attached to the cloth by metal clips are 17 metal and cloth badges and insignia from military units. The star, commonly known as a 'pip' is derived from the Star of the Knight Cross of the Military Division of the Order of the Bath. Part of the Reverend Chaplain Major Thomas Bruce Williams, No 556101, Collection.Eighteen officer's rank insignia featuring a gold coloured star. In the middle of the star is a red circle with the motto 'Tria Juncla In Uno' inscribed. Surrounding this circle is a green laurel leaf wreath. The distinctive shape of the badge, worn on the upturned side of a slouch hat, is commonly identified with the spirit of ANZAC formed at the Gallipoli landings 1915 There are seven patterns of the Rising Sun. 1902 - 1991. The Rising Sun has evolved over time and today Australian Army soldiers wear the seventh pattern Rising Sun. The Third Pattern Rising Sun Badge. May 1904 The third pattern Rising Sun badge carried a scroll inscribed with the words ‘Australian Commonwealth Military Forces’ and was worn throughout both World Wars. There were, however, a number of variations of the badge; a special version was struck for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902 and there were badges of the Commonwealth Horse and the Australian Instructional Corps, each with its respective title on the scrolls. This pattern badge formed the template for all subsequent General Service badges. The most widely accepted version of the origin of this badge is the one that attributes the selection of its design, c1902, to a British Officer, Major General Sir Edward Hutton, the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Forces. Hutton had earlier received as a gift from Brigadier General Joseph Gordon, a military acquaintance of long standing, a ‘Trophy-of-Arms’ composed of mounted cut and thrust swords and triangular Martini-Henry bayonets that were arranged in a semi-circle around the Crown.
