Albert Richardson, a local historian, wrote widely on the gold mines of Bendigo. The mining documents in this collection are representative of the information he gathered and recorded on many of the mines on the field. The locations of the mines discussed by Albert Richardson in the reports, are detailed below: Victoria Quartz Gold Mine: located on Victoria Hill, Ironbark, 'Approximately 220 yards west of western footpath of Eaglehawk Road, where Victoria Street terminates and slightly to the south of the imaginary extension of that Street'. United Hustlers and Redan Gold Mine: ' The area includes Holdsworth Road, Holmes Road, Havillah Road and Wood's Street in the North Bendigo, Long Gully area. Main or 'Redan' shaft, approx 155 yards west from the western edge of Holmes Road and about 200 yards north from the edge of Havilah Road' United Devonshire Gold Mine, Eaglehawk: 'Approximately 176 yards south-east of the intersection of Victoria Street and Upper Road, on south-western side'. Seven men were killed at the Great Extended Hustler's mine disaster on 2nd May 1914 by an explosion of dynamite occurring as the men were waiting at the plat to ascend the mine at the end of their shift. No blame was attached to anyone in the findings of the inquisition. It was unknown what caused the dynamite to explode. This document formed part of the research done at the time by Bendigo Historical Society, of the 100 years commemoration of the mine disaster, held at Hustler's Hill in 2014. Understood to have been used in Linton c.1864. Information provided in 1993 by Russell McDonagh Bennett suggests these scales may also have been used at Dawsons Dam mine c.1907-1909.Beam scales used for weighing gold. Scales consist of two circular metal dishes, each supported by three wires suspended from a metal balance (beam), which in turn is linked to and supported by a vertical metal stand. A lever attached to the stand can be used to move the weighing dishes vertically and horizontally. The scales are mounted on a rectangular wooden box with a sliding drawer which is divided into three compartments.Maker's marks stamped on dishes, lever and stand. On slip of paper kept with box, dated 9-7-93: "This set of Gold Weights is to go to the Linton Historical Society to match a set of Gold Scales they have in their collection. The weights were from the effects of James Mitchell Carlyle Bennett, whose photos of the Dawson Dam Pump House etc are in the Society's collection. These weights were used at the Dawsons Dam main office, when the daily gold collection was weighed, Circa 1907-09".
