The Victorian gold discoveries attracted thousands of immigrants who came half way around the world to make a better life for themselves. When Ballarat miners organised protest meetings and petitions against their mistreatment and lack of political representation, the government viewed this protest as treason and ordered its forces to teach the miners a lesson. The miners built their stockade at Eureka as a defence as a defensive measure. The attack on ther miners at Ballarat was on 3rd December, 1854. This black and white photograph taken c1900 at a camp in Beechworth, depicts the last six survivors of the Beechworth Chinese mining community. The two men standing on the far right are believed to be local Beechworth men. The man second-from-right is believed to be George Young, a Chinese Presbyterian catechist whose task was to fulfil the Church's remit to evangelise the Chinese population. Beechworth became home to one of the largest Chinese communities in Australia after the 1857 Buckland Riots pushed Chinese miners from their claims and they were forced to relocate their camps. Under the Protectorate system, the Chinese were required to live in camps on the outskirts of town and were subject to many additional controls and regulations. Chinese miners continued to form a large part of the Beechworth population, and surrounds, until gold ran out at the turn of the century.This photograph is historically significant for its association with the development of Victoria through the discovery of gold and the first wave of free Chinese immigration to Australia as part of the 1850s gold rush. This photograph is also of social significance for its association with the history of the Chinese community in Beechworth, and the adversity faced by Chinese immigrants during the gold rush as part of a system of Chinese protectorates and segregated camps enforced by the Victorian Government in response to the hostility and violence directed at the Chinese during this period. The discovery of gold in the 1850s started a series of rushes that transformed the Australian colonies. The first discoveries of payable gold were at Ophir in New South Wales and then at Ballarat and Bendigo Creek in Victoria. In 1851 gold-seekers from around the world began pouring into the colonies, changing the course of Australian history. The gold rushes greatly expanded Australia’s population, boosted its economy, and led to the emergence of a new national identity. Edward Hammond Hargraves found himself 'surrounded by gold' near Bathurst in 1851. This discovery sparked off what was to become the most exciting, and perhaps chaotic, period in Australian History. Gathered in the book are over 120 eye-witness accounts of those turbulent years between 1851 and 1890 - the 'finds', terrible privations in the diggers' camps, police brutality, riots, and courage on the gold fields.
